Hi,
Yesterday, soon after an automated update, my laptop got flooded with viruses. I am not sure if they were there before, but my anti-virus software identified several threats. I went offline, tried to manually remove the files and registry keys.

I ran Spybot, and it reported even more viruses. It was not able to clean all of them, specifically Win32.Banker.xe. Spybot attempted to clean after a reboot, but it failed, and the three viruses came back.

I have a slightly old version of Spybot (1.6.0.32). I don't know if this is part of the reason I cannot clean up the viruses.

Among other things, the viruses have disabled some of my firewall and antivirus settings. I am getting a lot of messages showing attempted mass mailings trying to leave my computer and hitting my firewall. Something is messed up with the internet connection, because although the wireless connection is working, I cannot reconnect to the internet (or ping anything). I am not going to try an fix that until after the viruses are cleaned, so I am posting from another computer.

Anyway, here is this hijackthis.exe log. Any and all help is appreciated!

Hi Adam12

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post

Hi Shaba,
Thanks for the advice. I have taken the comuter off the internet. I want to be as safe as possible, so I will do a full reformat and reinstall.

I noticed during running the computer in safe mode that the computer boots up from partition (2). Does this mean that there is a hidden partition containing the BIOS? Could this be compromised as well?

Is it possible for the reformat application to be compromised as well, such that it would leave behind something after the reformat?

What is the safest way to reformat?

Thanks for the help,
Adam

No, it doesn't mean necessarily that.

How many partitions your hard drive has?

Adam12
2009-06-17, 15:43
I thought I only had one partition, but once this problem started, I noticed that the bootloader says:

default = multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\Windows.

(as well as a timeout and operating system statements).

I do not know what the bootloader said before, so I don't know if this is different.

Does this mean I am booting off of the second partition? I only have a drive C, and I am not sure if there is a second partition. I am using a Dell laptop, and I just checked another Dell laptop at work, and it also has the same bootloader and only a C drive.

Is this anything to worry about, or is this just normal?
Apologies if I am asking foolish questions,
Adam

Go to start - run.

Type notepad c:\boot.ini and click ok.

Copy/paste contents of that file here, please.

Adam12
2009-06-17, 16:09
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I just did some checking, and it looks like Dell has a hidden partition used for system restores. If this is the case, do I need to/can I reformat the hidden partition as well, or should I try doing a restore from the hidden partition, which supposedly contains as shipped operating system and drivers?

Thanks,
Adam

Shaba

Then you can try to perform restore from that partition.

Hi,
I performed the restore to factory default from the hidden partition. The only things I've added to the computer since then are Spybot S&D and HijackThis, both installed via CD. I have not returned any of the files I backed up to the system, and I have not connected it to the internet. I did increase the TrendMicro firewall settings so that it would prevent and log most outgoing communication attempts.

I ran Spybot S&D and it found no threats. I rebooted and ran it again, and still no threats.

I then ran HijackThis, and the log is attached below. Is there anything else I should be doing to make sure the system is clean before I try to connect to the internet and install Windows updates?

Thanks,
Adam

You can restore pictures and documents and so.
