Nightmare On Gates Street

One of my computers has had a few spyware and malware infections, which have been successfully removed - or so other removal programs have stated. All infections got past Norton AV to infect my PC. System is now dog slow. I can run defrag five times a day, only to find that when finished and re-analyzed it says Drive still needs to be defragmented. The HD light on my CPU box is almost always ON, but the taskmgr lists the System Idle Process as using 99% of resources. I've run all the Norton SystemWorks 2005 programs - nada. I've run a couple of online system analyzers, all came back negative for problems. I'm running a P4 2.8 with WinXP Pro, XP Office with a gig of ram.
Any suggestions on what to do next? Any help would be appreciated.
