Windows Update Error 80080005 > "Windows can't check for updates"

Hi;

I'm new at this so if I don't give you the necessary info please let me know. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop that I bought last year [July 2008]. My OS is Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1. Around two weeks ago I noticed the Windows Update icon on my notification area and a little message appears when I place the mouse on it saying: "Windows can't check for updates". It gave me an error code: "80080005" and when I click "Check for Updates" it goes on and on and when it stops checking [like 10 minutes later] it tells me again that it can't check for updates. Because of this I just downloaded Hijackthis and scanned the computer. If anyone can help me in anyway I'd really appreciate it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop that I bought last year [July 2008].
I believe your computer is under warranty for a year, if it is still covered you invalidate the warranty by doing most anything to it. I suggest you contact Dell for Support if this is the case.

If you are not warrantied I will do what I can but this may not be a malware issue so I may have to send you to a free forum that deals with Vista Operating System issues. Let's see what we can find out if you wish to proceed.

First, we always need the error messages "word for word" just as Windows presents them to you, so write down or copy/paste that error and post it for me to see.

They likely charge for phone, I know email is free, the tech's are knowledgeable but it takes a few days and they will have an answer.

I also suggest you do this:
Run DISK CLEANUP: ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > DISK CLEANUP

Keep me posted and post that error message if you can get it.
