View Full Version : Artemis! virus

Spider71
2009-07-08, 00:21
Hi,

On the 13 June my McAfee quarantiened an Artemis! Trojan. Again on the 16 June another Artemis! Trojan was quarantiened. McAfee has been unable to remove it. I have since deleted McAfee and re-installed it.

Since then I tried to download AVG, my system downloaded it, then deleted it.
I have been unable to login to my ebay account as I am presented with a screen which says that there is a problem with the security certificate.
My system has also said there are new programs which were already installed on my computer eg MS office, apple software update.
This morning I could not switch on my computer for about an hour, the light came on then went off after about 5 seconds.
Please help

Thank you for looking at my logs.

Here is my HJT log:

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Hi Darryl,

Does the date turn back after reboot or does it get resetted itself without rebooting too?

Anyway, to get DDS report with proper details, please set the date manually to present one and run DDS again. Then post back contents of dds.txt file.

Hi Blade81,

Thank you for getting back to me. :thanks:

I have only noticed that the date has changed a few times after I have booted. Each time the date defaulted to the 8th August 2008. However the last time I changed it was 2 days ago & it did show the 10th August 2008 today.

I have now reset it to the current date & time & run the DDS tool again.

Here are the logs:

Hi,

There seems to be some remnants of AVG 8 there. Please download and run removal tool (32-bit) here (http://www.avg.com/download-tools) to get rid of those leftovers.

Uninstall following vulnerable Java:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.1 + update 9.1.2 for it) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.

The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.

You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run

Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives

Click on My Computer under Scan.

Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.

Click on Save Report As....

Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Save this report to a convenient place.

Copy and paste that information into your topic with a fresh dds.txt log (switch the time to correct date).

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.

Hi Blade81,

Thank you for the information. :thanks:

I have uninstalled J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

Also Adobe Reader 7.0 , then installed version 9.1 with update 9.2.

I ran the ATFCleaner.exe & checked all the listed items.

I did the Kaspersky online scan.

I sat with it most of the way through. It found the first Threat after just 10%. I then left it for a while & it found the second one by the time I returned which was at about 30ish%.

At about 57% I looked away from the screen for just a few seconds, by the time I looked back it said that the scan was complete... (judging by how long the first 57% has taken I'm not sure why it completed so quickly after 57%)

Here is the scan report:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0 REPORT

The selected area was scanned.

Thank you very much for your help. :)

Hi,

Please turn the date to correct one and then reboot system into safe mode (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#02) to see if date changes back there too.

Let me know the results.

Hi Blade81,

Thank you for your quick response. :thanks:

I did not need to adjust the date or time when I have logged on. However I rebooted in safemode anyway & the date & time remained unchanged there too.

Thanks again.

Best wishes.

Darryl :)

Ok. So, in case I understood the thing correctly, date gets set two years back each time you start system in normal mode but works normally when started in safe mode? Have you tried reboot into normal mode after safe mode thing to see if it still resets the date?

Hi Blade,

Thank you for getting back to me. :thanks:

When I booted up my computer in the morning on the 8th July,I left the date settings.
I have changed it every morning upto that point (for about 3 days).

I left the date & time settings after I started this thread. Today I changed it to re-run DDS this morning, the date has not changed since. I have switched my computer on & off around 4-5 times since.

Thanks again.

Hi Blade81,

I have just been browsing the internet.

The following prompt box keeps appearing: Security Warning The current webpage is trying to open a site in your trusted sites list. Do you want to allow this?

Current Site http://www.amazon.co.uk
Trusted Site res://ieframe.dll

It is not in my trusted sites, I have never heard of it.

Thanks again. :thanks:

Hi,

Does that notification appear on specific sites only?

Clean your trusted sites list by doing following:
1. Do not open Internet Explorer. Make sure all browser Windows and other applications (including email) are closed.
2. Right-click the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop.
3. Choose 'Properties'.
4. Click the 'Security' tab.
5. Click the 'Trusted Sites' icon to highlight
6. Click the 'Sites' button to review the list of sites included.
7. Highlight site listed and click 'Remove'
8. When list is empty click 'OK' and then 'Apply'.

See if you still get that notification.

Hi Blade81,

Thank you for getting back to me. :bigthumb:

Has not returned. Also the time and date appear to be correct this morning.

Good to hear that :)

Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

You may delete DDS and related logs. To remove HijackThis, uninstall HijackThis entry from add/remove programs first and then delete C:\Program Files\Trend Micro folder.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)
The program is available for download here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-Anniversary-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html)
Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=43)
Spybot can be downloaded at this location (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl&tag=but)
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi Blade81,

I have adjusted my browser security settings. I have also been using my computer recently but have still found it to be acting a little strange. Which is why I have not posted untill now.

After switching my computer on this afternoon the date & time have changed back to the 8th August 2008 & the time is showing as 08:00 ?
I went to log on to ebay & the screen was showing my account as if I had not logged out. I clicked on the sign out link & I have a full security screen with a red 'X' in a sheild on the left hand side:

'There is a problem with this website's security certificate.
The security certificate presented by this website has expired or is not yet valid.
Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or itercept any data you send to the server.

We recomend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website.

Then below there is a green sheild with a tick in it, on the left. Next to this it says 'Click here to close this webpage.
Below that on the left again there is a red sheild with a 'X' on it.

Next to that it says 'Continue to this webpage (not recommended).

At the bottom of this page I am entering this information into the Phishing Filter has a red circle with a white cross through it. It says when I hover over it:
'Phishing Filter cannot check this website because the Microsoft online service is temporarily unavailable'.

Have I got a virus?

Thank you for your help :bigthumb:

Best wishes.

Darryl

Hi Blade81,

Thank you for getting back to me. :thanks:

I've reset the clock to the correct time.
Then I've gone to the sign in page on ebay & that has not given me the Certificate Security warning screen. Also the Phishing Filter looks normal. I've also double checked this with the O2 website & discogs.com.

Thanks again :)

Best wishes.

Good to hear that sorted it out :). It's possible that CMOS battery on your motherboard is near its end. Date changing back by itself is one symptom of that.

Hi Blade81,

Thank you for you very quick response. :thanks:

I feel a bit silly, :red: as I thought all kinds of things yesterday. But now you have mentioned the CMOS battery that makes sense.

Would this battery make any other settings default back to factory setting?

Also, will Ad-aware & Spybot conflict with McAfee?

Thanks again for all your help. :)

Best wishes.

Darryl

Blade81

Would this battery make any other settings default back to factory setting?
That's possible. Settings in BIOS should be written down so that those can be set back to correct ones. By the way, have you tried to access BIOS and check datetime settings there? It would be recommended to see what settings does it show after you first shut the computer down (making sure that date is current before shutdown), take the power cord off for 30 seconds and then start up the computer again and access BIOS before loading Windows.

Also, will Ad-aware & Spybot conflict with McAfee?
No, those won't conflict with McAfee.
