View Full Version : SpybotSD reports Smitfraud-c
Although I've been a computer & internet user for 12 years I have never had any kind of 'infection' before as far as I am aware, therefore have no experience in fixing such problems.
I assume my teenage offspring have done something - visited a site they shouldn't have etc - when briefly left unsupervised... shrugs
Spybot tells me I have Smitfraud-c
I've read the description re: changes desktop wallpaper etc, however I have no symptoms which indicate an infection.
Could it possibly be a false positive?
I have turned off teatimer, backed up the registry with erunt and run HJT.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to look at my logs and advising me if I have a problem or not.
Regards
LG

Hi,
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.
Hi Blade81 - thanks for your help
The DDS instructions were to 'turn of any script blockers' - as far as I know the only script blocker I have is NoScript which runs with Firefox.
Regards
LG

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) as instructed in the screenshot here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif).
Post back its report & a fresh hjt log.
Hi Blade81
Sorry for the delay in replying. I was watching my email for the 'update' message but didn't receive one. Checked the forum earlier this evening on the off chance you had posted further instructions and there they were.
I've completed all steps up to 'run an online scan with Kaspersky'
I'm having trouble with Kaspersky - the database update is over 62,000KB and has failed to download twice so far. I'll have another go at it in the morning if the storm hasn't hit yet.
PS - If the gale force winds forecast for tomorrow take out our towns internet tower [again] it may be a few days before I can post again
Regards
LG
Managed to get Kaspersky to 'do its thing' on the third attempt.

Storm is coming in strong, fence starting to sway - eeek
Going offline til it blows over [ the storm, not the fence :-) ]

Hi LG,
Hopefully storm doesn't become too strong :)
Mirc related items can be ignored.
Check email messages in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\28mrvkpt.default\ImapMail\imap.gmail.com\INBOX mailbox and delete suspicious looking messages (if any).
How's the system running now (still anything found?)?
Hi again Blade81
House, shed, fence and communications tower all still erect - the storm didn't produce a tornado this time, thank goodness.
I'm already in Oz, but our winter tornadoes can be just as destructive as those Kansas jobbies, even though the cause is a bit different.

How's the system running now (still anything found?)?
Spybot is reporting all clear. Yippee !!
Wasn't sure if you wanted me to do a Kaspersky scan again - if so I will do that tomorrow afternoon.
Since we starting working on this, the computer developed a few little quirks, but I'm not sure if they are related to what we have been doing.
Perhaps it was the malware fighting back, or maybe my computer was just having a temporary 'hissy fit' and has now readjusted it's knickers into a more comfortable position.
At first, the start up time slowed to a crawl.
It was taking 3 1/2 minutes to get past the Windows XP progress bar, nearly 2 minutes to get from there to the log on screen etc.
In all about 15 minutes from pushing the power button to the icons in the systray appearing.
It was impossible to multi-task, clicking on things with the mouse took up to 3 minutes to get a response. switching between tasks took even longer, and occasional freezes.
Think back to the days when computers only had 32mb of memory and you'll get the idea.
Since the last lot of 'fixes', start up has returned to a reasonable couple of minutes in total. Multi-tasking is possible again.
My cordless mouse is still behaving a bit erratically.
Single clicks registering as Double clicks etc.
Maybe I have simply worn it out. I'll try an isolation test over the weekend after I dig the old wired type out of the 'box of bits'.
Occasionally programs take a really long time to load. I think that may be AVG scanning them first though [excel files etc].
Thought I would mention the quirks, just in case.
After all, I wasn't sure I had an infection in the first place.
I no longer trust myself to 'diagnose' problems with the computer. :red:
I've been going through my gmail - reduced the 'all mail' folder from over 1,000 to about 400 so far. Still some tidying up to do with that.
I came across a couple of spam emails that were marked as 'read' which I know I didn't open.
I've apologised to the offspring [for thinking they had gone to 'bad' websites], and given the spouse a stern lecture re: spam emails
Will await further instructions, with fingers crossed for the 'all clear'.
Regards
LG

Hi,
You could try to reinstall Logitech SetPoint. Sometimes mouse and keyboard behave strangely when their batteries are near end.
Some hints for making system performance better can be found here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html).
Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
You may delete DDS and HijackThis (uninstall thru add/remove programs and delete C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder) now.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade
Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad I could help. :)
Note:If it has been four days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh HijackThis log and a link to your previous thread.
If it has been less than four days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or MOD a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.
Hi Blade81
My apologies for the delay in replying to your last post. More hail, strong winds etc kept me offline. We're having a lousy winter!
Thank you so much for all your help.
I feel awful for not being able to say this sooner and hope you didn't get the impression I wasn't extremely grateful.
I followed your guide for securing the system and preventing any further problems. I've set up schedules for anything that doesn't do updates automatically. Microsoft update is set for Auto. Windows firewall is enabled, and the router is password secured.
I made the recommended changes to Internet Explorer [the only time I use it is for Microsoft sites].
The computer is still showing clean scans, no signs of nasties anywhere.
Once again, Thank you so much
Regards
LG
You're welcome :)
Glad to hear that system is running well again.
