After disinfecting my computer once already with help from the staff here in the forums i'm back again with the same symptoms and then some. The original symptoms (that are back again) are: The desktop and all the icons on it flicker periodically (as if the screen is refreshing), explorer.exe crashes/becomes unresponsive and also locks files and folders so they cannot be moved/renamed. The newest problem is a new program called systemsecurity2009 was just recently installed without my knowledge and since then i am unable to run any programs. Please help!

Forgot to mention that the browser redirects from google links and there are occasional popups.

Please read and follow the posted directions, then post a HJT log. If HJT does not want to run, try changing the name of the executable before you save it to something like: Lampshade.exe Once you have a HJT log, post also an uninstall list like this:
Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

No .exe programs are allowed to run. The only way to get HJT to run is going into safe mode. Here's the logs:

Sometimes, because of the malware, the executables have to be renamed, let's look at the uninstall list first.
I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

If you have problems getting comfix to run, try renaming it like this.

I can't access add and remove programs. That damn systemsecurity2009 program displays a popup bubble that says rundll32.exe is infected and can't be run.

Even renamed combofix doesn't run. Any .exe that you try to run on the computer is stopped and a popup bubble says ___ can't run because it is infected.

We need to get the tool to run, their are few options otherwise, Try booting into safe mode and running combofix there.

I don't believe hackers are blocking all exectables, just the ones they know we use like combofix.exe, MBAM.exe, HJT.exe. You can try changing the name (before you save it to the Desktop) to Lampshade.exe. I would like to be able to do this for you, but I can not.

Task manager, any anti-malware programs as well as normal programs like music players and browsers all don't run in normal mode. Very strange. In safe mode combofix ran and detected the presence of rootkit activity and asked to reboot the computer. Once it rebooted it produced this log:

Thanks for the feedback, we still have a lot of work to do. Follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.
First...I see no antivirus program running? Do you needs links for good freeware programs?
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: SpywareGuard Download Protection - {4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2} - (no file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

(If you still have MBAM there is no need to download it again, please make sure you update and run it as instructed)
5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file, the log from CFscript & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I can not see an answer to this very important questions and don't wish to proceed without it.
First...I see no antivirus program running? Do you needs links for good freeware programs?
I am also concered about items in the combofix Supplementary Scan
They are all similiar to this one and out of date, I doubt updating Java also updates Firefox.
FF - plugin: c:\program files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\NPJava11.dll

I had AntiVir but the ads drove me nuts and i eventually got rid of it and forgot to replace it with something else. any recommendations? Also as per your instructions earlier i updated adobe, java, and firefox

When installing AVG it warns that I have an outdated version of the program Roxio cd & dvd creator and that it could result in AVG not working correctly, however when i try to find the program in question i cannot locate it.

I can't spot the program in you uninstall list or the other scans? You can try to install AVG 8.5 anyway, likely will make no difference. If you installed PSI (Secunia) it would report the outdated Roxio program and make suggestions, perhaps it will supply a location?
You can also try the other antivirus program I linked you to.

Most are cookies and it appears AVG moved them all to the Virus Vault. Clean the junk off the computer like this:
Open AVG > History > Virus Vault > Empty Vault.

Let's see if we can wrap up like this.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update AVG 8.5 and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

Sorry for the late reply. Both logs came up clean but the computer has been running a bit slow. Firefox also crashed a few times (when minimized the program shut off) and the comp screen flickered strangely a few times while browsing.

Mozilla Firefox needed an update, and it also had a lot of old Java plugins. My suggestion is to uninstall it completely in Add Remove programs. Then restart the computer and install it fresh from here:

Unless you can give me an error message or more information, the only thing I can think about the flickering of the monitor is to suggest you check all attachments from the monitor to the computer. Make sure the two skrews are in tight. This is the time of the year for power issues with summer storms, make sure that is not the problem.

Thanks for all your help pskelley everything seems to be running ok now, with the exception of the weird screen flickering. It's a laptop so it shouldn't have anything to do with the connection to the screen. Any Ideas? I'll try to re-check to make sure its not a pinched wire or something.

I have three Desktop computers and no Laptop, my best suggestion would be to contact technical support at the manufacturer of the computer to see is they can help. How old is the computer? Could it need a new battery?
