View Full Version : internet explorer homepage hijacked by bestsafetyguide.net, zlob downloader

i hope you guys can help me because i am really confused as to what to do. My internet explorer homepage has been hijacked, as whenever i use ie, bestsafetyguide.net appears as my homepage, instead of start.earthlink.net as i have set it to. it seems to be overriding my settings in internet options. In addition, a Yahoo! toolbar has appeared, even though I never intentionally installed one.

i have used spybot to repeatedly delete zlob downloader, and the thing continues to appear again and again on the spybot log.

my mcafee virusscan has detected infected files on my computer, and has isolated them in a folder called 'quarantine' in the local disk. the program identifies the virus as New Poly Win32.

random popups appear at regular intervals in the bottom right corner of the screen. they have a red border, and the text displayed in them is as follows:

Your computer is infected!

Critical System Error!
System detected virus activities.
They may cause critical system
failure. Please, use antimalware
software to clean and protect your
system from parasite programs.
Click here to get all available
software.

Also, when I mouseover a new symbol that has never been on my taskbar before (it looks like a red circle with a slash and then it changes to a green symbol of some sort) it displays 'Virus Alert!'

I have attached the HijackThis log below.

Hello and welcome to the forum:) If you are not receiving help elsewhere, this is the Smitfraud trojan and some other unrelated junk. Follow these directions.

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

2) Please download SmitfraudFix (http://www.geekstogo.com/modules.php?modid=5&action=download&id=80) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks for returning that information, follow these directions.

Thanks to S!Ri, Trevuren and any others who helped with the fix.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

A. Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install Ewido anti-malware.
When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/). Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.

B. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Login on your usual account.
______________________________

C. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

D. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

E. Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
Click on Scanner
Click on Settings
Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
Under What to scan select Scan every file
Click on Ok
Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
Click Save Report button
Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

F. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
______________________________

G. Please post:
c:\rapport.txt
Ewido log
A new HijackThis log
You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Thanks...Phil

Hello and thanks for returning this information. We have a little more work, but first this:

1) You are running AVG by Grisoft and Network Associates and two antivirus programs at the same time is NOT a good thing. See what Symantec has to say:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206 and Microsoft:
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
I suggest you uninstall one and update then run a complete system scan with the other. Let me know the complete name and pathway of anything that can't be deleted or at least quarantined.

2) Windows Defender will block the fix, turn it off until you are done:
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.earthlink.net/partner/mor...on/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html

if i remove the network associates folder from the program files folder to an external drive, will mcafee be "running" on my computer? also if i decide that i would like to use mcafee instead of avg, would dragging that file from the external drive back to the program files folder allow the program to be run again on my computer?

I would have to suggest you ask McAfee those questions:

In terms of effectiveness, without considering cost, which antivirus software is better- AVG by Grisoft, or Mcafee VirusScan?

Thanks.

Here are a few good ranking you can view.
http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=69&mnu=69
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,124475,00.asp

I will say this, I installed AVG by Grisoft on my Sisters new Dell when she needed a good free program. I also run McAfee myself and have for years, being able to run multiple computers for the same price has a lot to do with that.

Keep in mind that the Antivirus program is only on piece of a good layered protection, this information may help you more from some of the best in the business.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Safe surfing...Phil

second hjt scan
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 2:48:10 PM, on 6/18/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [b65473d7.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\b65473d7.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [b65473d7.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Emery\Local Settings\Application Data\b65473d7.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

How much of the rest of this you do is up to you, there is no doubt this user was also infected.

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(this must be done, if they are still there)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\b65473d7.exe <<< file

C:\Documents and Settings\Emery\Local Settings\Application Data\b65473d7.exe <<< file

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Let me see another HJT log from this user.

To answer your question, I have no experience with Windows Defender and the jury is still out on it. Microsoft gives it away free and who knows if they will continue to do that. I run Spybot, Ad-Adware, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IE-Spyad. Those along with ZoneAlarm free and McAfee that I pay for keep me clean and I go where many folks would not checking these logs. I do pick up an occaisional problem but I quickly remove it. I also use a hardware router which affords me additional protection. I hope this helps.

Thanks...Phil

Does SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard or IE-Spyad offer spyware protection for Firefox? :)

pskelley
2006-06-19, 12:41
Thanks for that new HJT log and it appears clean of malware, good job:bigthumb:

As far as your question about Firefox, while I do have it installed I rarely use it and I was assuming that those programs also protected Firefox.

As far as the Javacool programs, you may be able to get your answer here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ IE-Spyad sets up a list of malware and protects the registry so it would make no difference what the browser is:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

Here are good tutorials on the programs if you wish to view them:
SpywareBlaster
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html
IE-Spyad
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial53.html

Hope this help

Thanks...Phil
