Hi I have tried to remove Win32/Delf.uc with spybot 1.6.2 but it seems to be self propagating. Please find below HJT log.

Some of the logs I request will be quite large, You may need to split them over a couple of replies.

Please Note, your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.

Disable Teatimer
We need to disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the cleaning.
Please do not re-enable it until I give instructions.

First step: Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident Second step, For Either Version : Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Click Link >>> HERE <<< Link (http://www.neoshine.co.uk/mina/Downloads/TTWipe.bat) and select "save as" and save it to your desktop
Double click TTWipe.bat
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.



Download and Run RSIT

Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open:

log.txt will be opened maximized.
info.txt will be opened minimized.

Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.


Please Download GMER to your desktop

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) and extract it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click Yes.

Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.

GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked. Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.


DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

Hi. I have tried to run RIST: it starts, displays msgbox "Listing event logs", with status bar at %90, and then nothing. Its been running 1 hour.


Complicating issue:
I have downloaded, but not executed, GMER. I am waiting for instruction to do so. I understand when the time comes to close any open programs, sure, but I also have Symantic Enterprise running and it has quarantined Win32.Virut.W. Symantic Quick scan automatically kicks in at boot, displays warning dialogue box. None of the profered options get rid of virus, I can not 'Unload' Symantic, nor unistall it.

I appreciate forum rule asking posters to deal with only one prolem at a time so I did not mention it earlier.

What should I do about these issues,

I'm afraid I have very bad news :(

This machine needs to be formatted.

This system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can format should it happen to become infected from the backups.

Hi katana. Thanks. I will reformat this particular machine. I have 3 computers that I network through a router to a dsl modem and from there to the internet. I also have a variety of swap hard drives, external mini drives and USB memory keys.

1. Is my modem compromised?
2. Is my router compromised?
3. are each of the drive/storage devices compromised?
4. I updated a motherboard driver set, is it compromised?

Thanks again for your help: I appreciate your direct response. While annoying to have to reformat this machine and possibly everything else, its probably time to start resh on them anyways.

Out of curiosity, is it possible to detect backdore internet activity? I have a 'packet sniffer' (Ethereal) and have never seem any thing I couldn't track down appear in the logs... mind you I am so totally not a programmer or whatever I could quite possibly not detect or notice....

High probability :(
along with any other machines you connected them to.
Virut can use the Autorun feature to infect a machine.
See the info below on the best course of action.

Yes, you will probably find the most information in the Router logs.

Step 1

USBNoRisk

Please download USBNoRisk (http://amf.mycity.co.yu/personal/bobby/USBNoRisk/usbnorisk.exe) to your Desktop and run it by double-clicking the program's icon
wait a couple of seconds for initial scan to be done then you can close it.

( This should prevent any Autorun component reinfecting the machine )

Please ensure that any USB/Flash/External drives are connected for the next part
if you can't connect them all at once, you will need to run the scan for each "Batch/Group" of devices

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)
NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, select the external drives/storage.
( No need to scan the main drive, you just formatted it !! )

It may take a while, but it is worth it

**Note**

To optimize scanning time Close any open programs.
Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Step 4

Run the Kaspersky Scan on any other machine that is connected to the network.

You should see quite quickly if the drive/s have been infected or not.
Any drive that has files flagged as Virut should be formatted.

If there are files that you need to save, put them all on one drive and then scan that again.
