Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

I've caught an annoying virus trying to get me to buy their great virus removal software
Nothing showing in the HJT log run: Safe mode with network support
Please post all logs in Normal Mode.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php/topic,5946.0.html

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks Pskelley!

To address your steps:

1) I've read the Before You Post info and caveats

2) I am having problems entering "Normal" mode. Everytime I restart my computer, it only partially restarts before aborting. The computer told me I'm having the problem that I've pasted at the bottom of this reply.

3) My Teatimer is disabled, and I've installed Malwarebytes and Mbam-setup, albeit in "Safe w/ Networking" mode.

Any advice as to how I can get into "Normal" mode, or anything I can do in the meantime in "Safe"?

Thanks!

I need you to know this is not my operating system, so instructions may be different with Vista and I may need to send you to a Vista forum to deal with Operation System issues.

I need to know what the computer is telling you, post that error message word for word. Usually, when you boot to safe mode a restart returns you to normal mode.

Make sure you are signed in as adminstrator to make changes.

You can give this a try.

Thanks!

This is also my first Vista machine :)

I followed the instructions you provided, but it was not successful.
Here is what happens:

1)My computer restarts, and works its way up until it prompts me
for my password.

2)After I provide my password, it continues booting up, falters, then
gives me a "black screen of death" before restarting on its own

3)It then brings me to the Windows Error Recovery black & white page:

Windows did not shut down successfully. If this was due to the system
not responding or if the system was shut down to protect data, you might
be able to recover by choosing one of the safe mode configurations from below:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode w/ Networking
Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt
Start Windows Normally

When I chose "Start Windows Normally," it would just repeat the same sequence as above.

When I chose "Safe Mode w/ Networking," it successfully booted, then popped up a Microsoft Windows window:

"Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown.
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem."

The window gave me 3 options: 1) View Problem Details, 2) Check for Solution, 3) Cancel.

When I chose option 2) Check for Solution, my computer "worked" on it, but didn't turn anything up- just closed the window when it surrendered.

When I chose option 1), it provided these details:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 1000008e

BCP3: 8BD3D028
BCP4: 00000000

C:\Users\Bond\AppData\Local\Temp\WEREE63.tmp.version.txt

Read our privacy statement:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=50163&clcid=0x0409

Referencing the last two "Files that help describe the problem,"
I followed those paths but did not find the files in question.
BTW, I already have my system set up to read hidden files and folders.

The Minidump file is in its location.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I apologize for my lack of knowledge of the Vista Operating System. To be safe, I believe you would be much better off at a forum where they work with Vista problems all of the time. I may be wrong, but I do not think this is a malware issue. There is information online:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=sysdata.xml&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

But since you are new to Vista also, I suggest you post at one of these free forums.
