View Full Version : Help with Win32.JoLEE.K needed
Hi, I am everythign but a techie but woudl very much appreciate yoru help in getting rid of the Win32.Jolle.K worm. Ran spybot and it does remove it but the malware comes back when I restart the computer. I am being invaded with proxy symantec pop-ups making my laptop pretty much unusable.
I read the warnings and guidelines posted on this site and belivie I have taken all the initial steps (erunt, te-timer, HJT). I would be super grateful for your help.

You need to read the TeaTimer directions again, you did not disable it. If you wish to contine, and I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, we will start like this.
1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing.

Norton AntiVirus and AntiVir Desktop <<< uninstall one of those completely.
2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

4) I am wondering why you have not installed Service Park #3 and are running an old Internet Explorer browser version.
Please do not download anything I do not request until we finish with the malware removal.
5) Recap: Post any information I requested, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log reflecting the changes above.

I am at work now but will do everything step by step when I get home tonight.
To answer some questions, I disabled the teatimer but after I ran the HJT as I was reading instrucitons along as I went. I will check first thing that it is indeed still disabled when I turn the computer on and if not will do as directed. I will also uninstall Norton as it has expired a long time ago (which is why I downloaded antivir). As for the service pack #3 woudl I dare say I don't even know what it is? I used to live in Europe were a computer tech friedn was helping me with everythign and I have basically not installed anything apart for a new version of Itunes and Antivir over past couple of years.

Quick question, I have an external harddrive attached with pretty much all my pictures, shoudl I leave it attached so it can be scanned too or should I unplug it for safety?

Pictures, you should be able to unplug it. If you have any concerns about those, have the antivirus program scan the drive.

I should add that I did disable the only antivir I could find on my computer but it said I still had these others antivir active. No idea what that was and I could not find them. Any idea what that means and if it screwed up teh process?

Seems it worked ok, combofix removed a load of junk. I am not real familiar with your antivirus program, here is some information:

Let's continue like this:
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

So I did everything and here are the final logs.
Pop ups have stopped popping up so at least the symptom is gone. Did I get rid of all malware? I still see some system 32 entries in the HJT log. Is this a problem?

I still see some system 32 entries in the HJT log.
The computer would not run without the valid system32 files. If you want to know what something is, use a good search engine, like Google.

smss.exe is a process which is a part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It is called the Session Manager Subsystem and is responsible for handling sessions on your system. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated I do not see any malware in your most recent HJT log.
Hackers can use valid file names, then you would need to have the file examined, here are several free files services:

Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update AntiVir Desktop and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

Hi Phil, did it all and I seem to have a last problem. While running Malwarebytes, Antivir started popping up announcing it foudn a Trojan and stopped MBam to run. It happens when MBam is scanning c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\05D646CA.tmp. If I delete it it moves to a next pop up with same script just different code after quarantine\. It calls it a TR/Agent Trojan described as this (see bottom).
Any idea what I shoudl do?

That is junk quarantined in an old Norton Antivirus folder:
c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\05D646CA.tmp
Navigate to and delete these leftover folders in RED
c:\program files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
c:\program files\Norton AntiVirus
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
Restart the computer and scan again with MBAM and let me know of any issues.
