View Full Version : Recurring infection on Netbook
As mentioned in my other thread for my desktop - http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=50398 - I connected the offending USB stick to my new (less than a month old) netbook before connecting it to the desktop and noticing the infection present on it. Since then, multiple runnings of both Spybot S&D and McAfee (which was included as a 90 day trial on this netbook, an Acer AspireOne AOD250, and was fully updated at the time of the infection) have failed to kill the trojan. I believe whatever it is to be interfering with both programs as well. On at least two occasions, downloading updates to SS&D failed with a bad checksum error on the updated detection rules.
On several occasions, I've believed the issues fixed, only to notice the problems returning when the Netbook next connects to the internet. These problems have recently become more obvious, and I now find that trying to click on C: in My Computer opens a standard Windows XP "Open With" dialog window. Right clicking on the drive and selecting Explore still allows me to access everything at least.
Since reading this forum, I've installed Malwarebytes, but as per the instructions thread I've not yet used it, to avoid removing any more traces above what my clumsy attempts at fixing things over the past few days may already have done.

Apologies, that log was taken before I disabled TeaTimer. Everything's been setup as requested.
Just FYI, the other post (not word-wrapped) was in regards to my desktop computer, which may also have been infected by this trojan (and could potentially have had other underlying infections I was unaware of), and was a separate issue.
I'd prefer not to reformat or reinstall, simply based on the fact that Australian download limits make reupdating a computer to be secure rather difficult, costy and tedious. This netbook is a secondary computer, recently purchased. While there may be some small amount of sensitive information on it (a few saved firefox passwords from before this infection), I've not logged into those sites via the netbook since the infection, and have confirmed from computers known to be free of infections that my logins have not been used or tampered with.
The USB stick has been reformatted, and was cheap enough that I have no issues with using it as a "suicide drive" if I need to download and transport something to the Netbook, if keeping that Netbook isolated from the internet would help with removing these issues.
Should I just remove the identified item using HJT to begin with, or are there other more extensive scans you'd like me to do first?
I should probably also clarify just quickly regarding Malwarebytes in the log above. While I had installed it before running HJT in the anticipation that you'd want me to run it (based on other threads in this forum), I've not yet run a scan using that program, as per the instructions from the before you post thread.

Thanks for the feedback, I suggest you wait until we are finished with this computer, then start a new thread for the other one making sure you have read and followed the directions before posting. Once you do that, the next available helper will assist.
Since you already have MBAM, we will use it first, follow the directions carefully.
1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.
No need to download since you have it, but be sure to update and run it as directed.
Today: Version 1.39 (Database 2535 7/31/2009)
2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.

With regards to the latter, I should note that I haven't uninstalled any software that came included with this Netbook as of yet, so I can't necessarily identify everything on this list, though I believe some of the odder sounding ones to be part of the pre-installed Acer GameZone software.

The uninstall list looks ok, but I have no way of knowing if the programs are updated to the most secure versions. Secunia PSI (freeware) can tell you that and if you don't want to keep the program once updated, just uninstall it. I personally run it on all computers and suggest turning it off and using it monthly or so to check for any new updates.
I am not seeing malware in the HJT log, let's do some cleaning.

Just want to check....since I use Firefox as my primary browser and not IE, should I be running the items from the Firefox tab of ATF as well, or just those ones on the main tab?

Certainly not staying with McAfee after it failed to prevent this infection. Probably switching to a smaller lightweight client, given it's a Netbook. Perhaps the free edition of Avast to start with? I suppose I'll need a Firewall solution if I go with that as well, won't I?

I would clean in both IE and Firefox. If you use Firefox to save passwords make sure you opt out of that or they will be deleted.

SS&D found 2 entries for PWS.Gamemania.gen and successfully cleaned them.
In SS&D's Recovery tab, in addition to those two there are also 8 entries for PartnerBHO and 1 for Win32.Rungbu.a from prior scans before I posted this thread.

You can clean Recovery whenever you wish, I usually wait a few days after removal to make sure no mistakes have been made. Removed files can also be restored from there also.
We can run additional scans if you think they are needed. Why don't you run the computer for a day or two, then provide some feedback.

I've unloaded McAfee and installed the free Comodo Internet Security suite, based on its low memory footprint and the high ratings I've seen it getting (especially in Firewall trials). It turned up a few additional items. One of them (listed as Heur.Pck.Molebox) appears to be a potential false positive. The file there was the pre-installed Acer Gamezone software. The other items it found I believe may have actually been the items from the recovery area which I'd not yet removed.
I am noticing however that trying to click on the C: drive in My Computer has returned to giving me the Windows "Open With" dialog, and that the computer also seems to hang on shutdown, stopping on the standard "Widows is shutting down" screen and not automatically shutting itself down, both symptoms which had vanished over the weekend. I have a feeling that connecting this computer back to the internet after keeping it off while doing the previous scans might have allowed it to reassert itself somehow. I'm doing a Malwarebytes scan now, and will post up the logs from it, Spybot and Comodo once all are finished.
Well, this certainly can't be right. After not being able to find a few files that Comodo was looking at, I turned off the Windows folder options which prevented me from seeing hidden and protected system files, and found an autorun.inf in C: drive with the following contents.

Malwarebytes is currently continuing its scan, but Comodo is now popping up every so often with items in subdirectories of C:\System Volume Information\_restore{EF3B169D-222B-45B8-91C4-1CC417BOC738\ mostly in the \RP1, \RP11 or \RP17 subdirectories. The files it's finding all have the format A000XXXX.exe, where XXXX is a random 4 digit number, and they're being identified as Heur.Suspicious@XXXXXXXX (with Heur.Suspicious@25836810 being the only one of those to repeat thusfar).

Comodo is now popping up every so often with items in subdirectories of C:\System Volume Information\_restore
Those are infected System Restore files we have not cleaned yet (do not do a System Restore)
Post the results of the MBAM scan when complete, it will likely show the infected System Restore files.
We will likely have combofix take a look for us, but I would like to see the results of that MBAM scan first.

The MBAM scan found nothing whatsoever, however it was scanning those C:\System Volume Information\_restore directories at the time Comodo found all those infected files, so I'm guessing it looking in there was what stirred up the hornets nest for Comodo to find. I'll post up the Comodo results later today, when I get back from classes.
Here's the Comodo log of everything it's found. A fresh scan with the latest update just now found nothing. I'd renamed the suspicious autorun.inf in C: drive before turning off the computer last, and have noticed some of the symptoms (the hanging on shutdown and C: giving an "Open With" dialog when double clicked in My Computer) to have vanished, so I'm hoping it's not going to be able to reassert itself again now.

See if you can get Kaspersky Online Scanner (KOS) to run, make sure you are signed in as Administrator.
Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Having to install the Java runtime environment to run this scanner, but noticed something interesting while downloading that from java.com. For some reason, even though it is a .exe file, the download window here in Firefox was recognizing it as an MPEG 3 Layer Audio file.
Seems to be installing fine, currently in the middle of its download (significantly larger than I expected, which is a pain from a limited download per month Australian perspective, but I guess it can't be helped), but that's going rather slowly and it's past midnight, so I'll have to get back to you with the results when I wake up in the morning.
Kaspersky scanner ran without incident, found no problems.

Search Companion failed to find any copies of that file.
As far as noticeable symptoms, there's nothing really to add from before. The issues with opening C: and shutting down vanished when I renamed the autorun.inf that had been inserted (and which I'm assuming is now safe to delete?). The only strange issue now is why I couldn't install ComboFix to look for any additional traces, I suppose.

It is possible that the combofix download was corrupted, if you wish to try again, delete the copy you have completely. Turn off Combodo for just long enough to get the download, then try the directions again.
Update MBAM (Version 1.40 Database 2562 8/5/2009) and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update COMODO antivirus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.
