Hello all. Hopefully I'll be able to accurately describe my ordeal over the last 2 days. Let me start by saying my home PC is used buy multiple people, and I'm hoping that I will not have to reformat yet again since I have some files not backed up and I do not want to hook-up my external hard drive since I know the pc is infected.

So 2 days ago while my husband was online my computer started "going crazy" since I was out of the house he tried to run Spybot, but it would not work. He then started to run AVG, well it started right away picking up some trojans. This I found pretty shocking since I scan my computer once a week, unfortunately my son interrupted the scan half way through and I had to start all over again. After a few hours and due to the lateness of the day I decided to let it run overnight... big mistake.

I got up the next morning and right away was greeted not by AVG but yet another program that would immediatly re-launch after I closed it out. So I restarted my computer went into msconfig and stopped a few new unfamiliar programs from starting on launch. Restarted my computer and now all of a sudden I could not open any of my spyware / virus search programs, internet explorer, firefox, and any other .exe files. After finding a work around to access the internet and doing a registry edit for exe I was able to open several programs again, including AVG but not spybot. So I uninstalled and reinstalled spybot. Still it would not launch but the tea timer would start
up.

While installing spybot I saw that a program popped up that was self installing. I quickly exited it and disconnected the internet. Next I set out to remove a few of the program files that I could find such as Personal Antivirus, Antivirus 2010, and Bravix. Unfortunately I ended up removing something that caused me to have to reactivate windows upon restart of the pc. After removing those my computer stopped downloading and self installing those programs. After running AVG a third time it had found 15 trojans and 2 viruses. Still after removal spybot would not work.

So I came here, then to trend micro to get Hijack this. But hijack this would not install or open, so I went back to trend micro and did an online scan. It found an additional trojan and 2 instances of malware. After removing those I was able to run the exe for hijack this but not able to install. At this point spybot still won't open.

So I'm back here and below you will find the hijack this log, hopefully you can help me out since I know that there is sill something lurking on my computer. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

Kathrine, you must have missed the "Before you Post" directions, HJT is not located as instructed and it is unsafe. Delete both of these:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kathrine\Desktop\HJTInstall.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Kathrine\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe

and follow these directions carefully:
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log. <<< close HJT until needed later.

Please read and follow the directions carefully. You will want to keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting until it is clean, the junk can download more.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Phil,

Okay after deleting the files you mentioned, I downloaded both HJT and combofix. In order to get them to install I had to rename and unblock the file under properties. Below are the requested logs. If I cannot get them all in one post I will add a second post.

Thanks!

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Java(TM) 6 Update 7 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:

Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< Please be sure Spybot S&D is up to date and fully immunized.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O3 - Toolbar: AT&&T Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-94BE-FD60BB9AAE29} - C:\PROGRA~1\ATTTOO~1\ATTTOO~1.DLL (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

Phil,

Attached are the requested logs. I noticed immediately that my internet is much faster and the Malwarebytes program did find alot of threats. I am concerned however that in msconfig under the startup tab I still see some of the malicious programs listed.

Thanks.

I am concerned however that in msconfig under the startup tab I still see some of the malicious programs listed.
Exactly what are these "malicious programs"? They are not showing in Running Process.

See This:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html

Post a Startup list:
Open HJT > click Generate StartupList Log > Yes > copy/paste the contents of that notepad.

AVG8:
* Right click the icon for AVG in System Tray and choose Open AVG User Interface.

* Click on Update now, allow AVG to download and install any new updates.

* Click on Computer Scanner then choose "Scan whole computer", this takes a round one hour on the computer I am using now.

* Near the bottom above the words "The scan is complete" choose "Export overview to file"

* Choose Desktop and give it a name you will recognize like AVG Scan Results, then choose SAVE.

* Close results and close the Interface.

* Copy and paste the contents of that file.

For the start-up log do I need to check either of the option boxes? I only ask as the programs that I see are set to not run automatically on start-up.

Phil,

The programs that I am labeling "malicious" are the programs that started popping up when we realized there was something really wrong with the computer. The two I recognize are Braviax and HomeAntivirus2010, there are also a couple of new ones that I do not recognize dumprep 0 -u and umaduyevi (also msxm192z) a few of those listed under Command have just the exe file listed whereas most of my other current programs list the drive and directory. Is it possible that some of these are traces of programs that have already been removed? Also after doing a quick search I also have found Windows Antivirus Pro which from what I've read is a "rouge security program" still on my system. Below I will post the requested logs.

Thanks for your help!

As always, before you make changes in the registry, follow the directions in "Before you Post" to back up the Registry with ERUNT.

Here are a few links with information about startup programs:

Looks like AVG quarantined cookies, you can control cookies in Firefox, this might vary slightly with different versions:
http://mozilla.gunnars.net/firefox_help_firefox_cookie_tutorial.html

Also after doing a quick search I also have found Windows Antivirus Pro which from what I've read is a "rouge security program" still on my system.
Since you did not indicate the location, likely it is in either combofix quarantine (which we are about to remove) or infected System Restore files which we are about to clean.

Let's proceed like this to see if we can wrap up, follow the posted order please:

(Keep in mind we changed the name of combofix, if this does not remove it, delete the iron on the Desktop and the C:\combofix folder and contents. Let me know if you have additional questions about the combofix removal)

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)

Update AVG and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.
Addition good AVG information:

Phil,

Thank you for the cookie information. I've already changed it to delete all cookies when I close my browser :D:

I tried to follow this link http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm from two different sites and I keep getting a page load error. Should I skip this step for now and continue with cleaning out the system restore?

pskelley

Yes, finish with the instructions then you can look at the Startup information. I can tell you though that I am having no problem accessing this website: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
or this script from the website:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/msconfigdisabled.vbs
using Internet Explorer 8.

Try copy/pasting the url straight into the browser address line. You might
also try another browser if you are using Firefox.

Phil,

I followed all of the steps. Mbam only found 2 infected files and AVG found nothing, however when I searched again for Windows antivirus pro it came up again.

The shortcut is here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop

The folder is here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs

And looks like another shortcut is here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Antivirus Pro

It does appear that the shortcut is the only thing in the Windows Antivirus Pro folder. Are these just traces that I can delete?

Thanks again for your help.

Just right click and delete and instance of the junk you can find.

Make sure you can see all files and folders:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html

navigate to the items search is finding and right click/delete them. Then empty the Recycle Bin.

Phil,

I've deleted those files and all other scans have come up clean. The computer seems to be running better and after reading a thread I found here we changed the administration rights on the accounts that we use daily and created an administrator account for computer / software changes. Hopefully these extra precautions will make our computer safer! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help as I need this computer for job hunting.

Thank you so much!
