View Full Version : Multiple iexplore.exe in task (list more than 2)
I have been seeing multiple processes in my task list of iexplore, up to 12 or more depending on how many browser windows have been opened and closed.
The processes do not stop when a browser window is closed and they accumulate.
I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Spybot found Win32killav.kq and removed it but the issue still continues.
Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes' were clean.
I have Norton AV running.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.
Paul, some of this junk is hard to remove, so do not expect fast or easy. If that works for you, we will start like this.
1) Read the "Before you Post" instructions again carefully, since you missed the instructions to disable TeaTimer, be sure you missed no other important information.
2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
3) If you still have MBAM, no need to download it but make sure it is update to at least:
Version 1.40 (Database 2571 8/6/2009) and run it as instructed.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
Tutorial if needed:
http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php/topic,5946.0.html
4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Thanks...Phil
Phil,
Thanks for your time.
I have been good about running malwarebytes', ad-aware, and spybot regulary.
I had a trojan.bho infection that malwarebytes' found two days ago it was cleaned but it returned once and cleaned it again.
The log below returned clean.
The HJT log and the uninstal log are also below.
As a side note, there are only 3 instances of iexplore at this time since I have not opened and closed multiple browser windows.
This is my major concern.
Again thanks for all of your help.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.
Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Not sure what's gone on here, if you run the freeware version, could you check to make sure it is up to date and uninstall any extra versions.
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX <<< check this
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87

The HijackThis log is showing this junk:
O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {3cedc044-be42-4ef7-87f8-101168799849} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwreg32.dll
See this >> http://virscan.org/report/c29a0a9ee13253534d0eb57e2a508e33.html
Let's see if we can remove it manually first.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {3cedc044-be42-4ef7-87f8-101168799849} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwreg32.dll
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
3) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwreg32.dll <<< delete that file
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:

Let me know how the computer is running, any malware issues?
Thanks...Phil
Phil,
I have tried to delete the C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwreg32.dll file following your instructions but to no avail.
Aslo, the uninstall logs for the older AdAware and the Logitech Desktop Messenger were not found, could not uninstall.
I updated all the programs you stated and ran the others as instructed.
I still show multiple iexplore sessions even though I have only this posting browser session open.
I have attached a new HJT log for you
Thanks again for your help.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed
Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Thanks
Phil,
Here is the ComboFix log along with the HJT log.
Also Norton detected the xwreg32.dll file and was not in the System32 folder when I loooked today.
Thanks again......
Paul

This tool will look for a Rootkit infection.
Download it to your Desktop
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
Double click the fsbl.exe and accept the agreement
Click NEXT...then Scan
BlackLight will Scan for hidden items
If anything is found save the report and post it.
Items found may be valid so do not remove anything.
How is the computer running now?
Thanks
Phil,
I ran the BlackLight program and it returned zero items found.
The computer is running better.
I am seeing the iexplore.exe process are not staying in the task list after the browser windows are closed.
It would seem that all is well at this point.
Should I run the Tea Timer again?
Do you feel it is a good tool to keep running?
I just like to keep background process to a minimun if I can thats all.
I would like to thank you again for all your help getting this issue resolved.

Sounds good, let's look at your comments.
You can right click BlackLight and delete it.

Let's see if we can wrap up like this.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)
Update Norton AntiVirus and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.

Phil,
My system looks like it's running better.
I have run MBAM and it's clean.
I have Norton on auto update and scan so it has been running as well.
As suggested, Combofix is deleted, system restore cleaned up.
As of today, things are good.
Do you know of a program that will be able to delete the older versions of programs that I have without the uninstall files?
Would you suggest reinstalling the older versions to create a new log file and then uninstall?
Just a way to clean up I guess.
I can't say :thanks: enough !

Hi Paul, It is always best to use the uninstaller if available. I suggest you visit the website of the program you are having issues with, look for support and ask them how best to proceed. If you find you still have issues, let me know what program and I will see if I have any information.
Thanks...Phil
