View Full Version : virtumonde.dll found - help please?
I ran Spybot S&D yesterday and it found virtumonde.dll so I did the 'Fix Selected Problems'. Today I ran Spybot again and it found the virtumonde again, so I came to the forums looking for answers. Here is my HJT log file, hopefully someone here will be able to help me out. Thanks in advance!!!

I forgot to say in my last post that after running the latest Spybot, I did NOT do the 'Fix Selected Problems', I just copied the report here.
You have an old version of spybot.
Please install latest version of spybot, run a scan with it and tell me what it found if any.
I haven't gotten a chance to download the newest version yet - busy with work - but I should be able to get to it later tonight. Just want to keep you updated so you aren't sitting around wondering. :)
I downloaded the latest version of Spybot (1.6.2.46) and ran the scan - it found 41 cookies, but no more virtumonde! So apparently the older version gave me a false positive???

No, I don't believe I have any other issues. I deleted the cookies so my system should be all clean (for awhile anyway :) ).
A HUGE thank you, Shaba, for your help. I very much appreciate the time you have spent and the help you provided. I googled virtumonde and the results had me worried that this would be hard to remove. Thankfully that didn't turn out to be the case here. I'm glad, for both our sakes, that this was fixed without any real hassle. Again, Thank You!!!!

Honestly, I'm not sure what that entry really even means. Technically, yes it is possible that at some point I set it to that, but if I did then either A) I am unaware that I did, or B) it happened long ago and I don't remember doing it. I've had this computer for about 5 years now and when I first got it my sister helped me set up the wireless internet connections. We also attempted (never succeeded) to set up a home network with all of the computers in the house. Is it something that would be changed with that?
Can you tell me where I would go to change this? Perhaps if I looked at it I might remember something.
You should be able to find it from IE settings.
That looks more like improper entry to me.

I did a little hunting around...
I opened IE, clicked on the "Internet Options" and went to the "Connections" tab. I then clicked on the "LAN Settings" button. In that window that opened there are two sections - "Automatic Configuration" and "Proxy Settings". Absolutely nothing in either of these boxes is selected, however under the "Proxy Settings" section there is a option to "Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections)." - this is NOT selected, but there are greyed out boxes underneath with the "Address" set to "null" and "Port" set to "80". If I were to select the option to use the proxy server for my LAN, the "Address" and "Port" options become editable.
That seems to be the only place I can find where I am able to edit my Proxy Settings.
Right now I have IE 7 and I think the computer came with IE 5 installed on it, but I've always used Firefox as my browser ever since the beginning.
It is now about my bedtime, I'll check in tomorrow. I'll also ask my sister if she possibly remembers changing these settings.

I want to take a step back and ask what about that entry seemed weird to you? Was it the fact that the Address is "null" or was it that the entry exists at all in the HJT log?
From everything I can tell, I do not use a Proxy server. The check box that turns it on and off is unselected, thus I do not use one.
So my question is, because I do not have the Proxy server option turned on, does it really matter what address, if any, is listed? Should I go in and delete the "null" entry and leave it blank? Or is it that it's showing up in the HJT log when it isn't being used the real concern?
Yes, please remove it. It can cause issues if you or someone else for some reason enables it as it is not a valid proxy server.

I deleted all the entries for the Proxy Server, so now all the associated boxes are blank. It is still turned off and not being used.
I ran another Spybot scan and came back with just a couple of cookies, nothing of any concern.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Next we remove all used tools.
Please download OTCleanIt (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Sorry this is taking so long, but I'm still not all the way through the list. My Anti-Virus program took quite a while to process all of the changes that Spyware Blaster made. Right now I've updated the HOSTS file and my AV program is currently processing the 15,000+ changes with that. I'm hoping to have the whole list finished tomorrow.
