I was infected night before last with one of the bogus malware removal trojans which complete takes over the computer. I rebooted in safe mode, ran spybot which found the two malware noted above. I rebooted normally with spybot to run on system startup, but spybot appeared to be stalled. I rebooted again in safe mode, ran spybot, found the same files. I rebooted normally with spybot to run on system startup with maximum priority. Spybot has not stalled but is running very, very slowly. It could take days to complete.
As that computer is basically frozen, except for safe mode, I am replying from the other computer on my network.
Your help is appreciated

I posted this yesterday but since then, I have run ERUNT on the infected computer in the safe mode by transfering the file by flash drive. Here is the hijack log.
Your help is really appreciated

Hi Rustlr

Please post next HijackThis log taken in normal mode :)

Guten Tag
First I loaded hijackthis to the desktop from a flashdrive and opened it. The only response I got was when I tried to open it again it said hijackthis was already running but I never got any screen or log.
I have tried several times to do this by loading hijackthis into a folder in mydocs from a flashdrive. I never get any hijackthis screen and eventually the computer logs off by itself or goes to an inactive screen.
I also tried saving hijackthis to the desktop in safe mode but it never showed up in normal mode.
Thanks
Rustlr

Renaming the exe file and uploading this to the infected computer and opening the new file in windows explorer generates no response

Download gmer.zip (http://gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save to your desktop.
alternate download site (http://hype.free.googlepages.com/gmer.zip)

Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial105.html) for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial106.html).
When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
Click on the Rootkit tab.
Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

If you are not able to run it in normal mode, please see instructions how to install recovery console manually and run it after that in safe mode.

Do I need to run this in normal mode, the instructions talk about having internet connection for windows recovery console. The internet is not available in safe mode

I have tried to download combofix to a flash drive but I get the cannot copy, access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected...
I did get one copy but does not run either in normal or safe mode on the infected computer. I get the message that file is corrupted, please download new file. The internet does not appear available on the infected computer in normal mode either as IE never accesses a webpage and the malware keeps trying to block it.
Do I have to disable Macafee and Spybot on this computer in order to down load an uncorrupted copy of combofix? The instructions for combofix say download directly to desktop. I can not do this on the infected computer. Is transferring by flash drive OK?
I am not happy about disabling my protection on this computer to download combofix

I am not having much luck manually installing the recovery console. I keep getting error messages and instructions that dont seem to work with my Dell reinstallation windows XP CD's. The time difference is killing me. It is now almost midnight PST and I am beat. I will be back at this in about 8 hours
Thanks

"Do I have to disable Macafee and Spybot on this computer in order to down load an uncorrupted copy of combofix?"

Yes, I am afraid so. Those need to be disabled anyway when you run combofix.
Instructions don't work with Dell CDs, that is true.

Being new to fixing malware problems, I did not know that you could run your computer in Safe Mode with Networking which allows an internet connection. This would have saved lots of time.
I am currently running combo fix in safe mode

Combofix gave me a list of system 32 files to write down, then rebooted into normal mode and is scanning

Safe mode with networking isn't recommended as your computer is then vulnerable.

I'll be waiting for results :)

It was the easiest way. I will log out into regular safe mode after this transmission

There is a game program on my computer by that name but I do not recognize that exe. It can be deleted as I have the installation disk.
I updated my spybot immunization, immunized and ran a scan which came up clean.
However my macafee antivirus will not fix itself due to error.
I also had turned off TeaTimer on spybot, should I turn it back on?

I have delete all of those files.
Macafee does not work. The trojan had disabled the virus protection and macafee will not fix itself, saying that there is some error. While trying to enable virus protection in the configure computer and files, I get "the setting cannot be changed because of an error". And when I try to configure Internet and Network network monitoring, I get " you cannot enable network monitoring right now, but please try again later. If you still have trouble, you may want to reinstall your Mcafee product".
I currently have that computer in safe mode without networking

There is no uninstall for my McAfee Security Center listed in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs tab. When I go to mcafee.com and try to run the Virtual Technician, I get the screen that says the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation. THe mcafee site says to remove the security center thru the add/remove programs function before you use the MCRP.exe tool to complete remove McAfee before reinstalling.
When restarting my computer, it appears to always be opening in safe mode, though it doesnt say that. The Administrator logon tab always appears and this should only be there in safe mode. Could be why I am denied access to the virtual technician?

I am running mcrp.exe but it says error obtaining full permission for cleanup. Some products may not be removed. I am running this in safe with networking mode.
When restarting in normal mode, I get the Admin logon with my regular logon. That should only show in safe mode. I was also unable to get an internet connection in "normal" mode.
I keep getting command screens flashing on and off.
MCRP Cleanup log to large to paste here
mcrp.exe says the cleanup was unsuccessful and to reboot to finish cleanup
I am going to reboot

Yes,
I ran the mcrp and reboot which appeared to remove all of mcafee. I went to the mcafee site and redownloaded the mcafee security suite and reinstalled it BUT the program is still totally disabled

That might mean malware issues or totally something else and we need to test.

Please uninstall McAfee with mcrp and install one free antivirus from below:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Let me know if that works or not.

I contacted mcafee and they indicated that I had an infected program and that I should remove and redownload. I did this thru the control panel add/remove program list. McAfee Security Center was there! However the result was the same with a disabled mcafee program.
I have used the add/remove list uninstall plus the mcrp.exe. I have to reboot now but I will proceed as directed

My other computer was infected this afternoon after my daughter was on facebook. AARGH!
I rebooted in safe mode, ran spybot which found right click and casalemedia, rebooted with spybot to run at startup which found nothing. However mcafee was disabled. I uninstalled it thru the control panel and redownloaded it. That seemed to work. I am currently running spybot in normal mode and will run mcafee after that.
Avast is ready for setup, so I am exiting this screen
AND going to bed! Will check in the am

I have contacted Microsoft with a description of the current problems and copies of all the logs that I have sent you. Microsoft collected what appears to be a large amount of system info. Response time is one business day.

Good :)

Keep me informed.

The internet keeps going away in normal mode, with the diagnostic saying that it will not work in SAFE MODE.
I rebooted the cable modem twice before the internet came back in normal mode.
I always have internet on my other computer thru the wireless router and also on this one in safe mode w/networking.
Not a problem at this time, as I am staying in safe mode on the problem computer and using the other computer for internet action. I was able to remove a similar security malware thru spybot but I did have to reinstall mcafee.
Some years ago, when I had access to IT thru my work, something similar happened and I think that IT had to reinstall Windows.

This issue may also be caused by one of the following factors:

1. The system is infected by viruses.

2. There are conflicting third party security programs running on the system.

We will address some of the more common causes of this issue. It is important that we attempt to connect to the Windows Update web site after each step to confirm whether the resolution has worked. This will prevent us from having to proceed with additional troubleshooting steps and provide us with valuable feedback to further develop our support resolutions for you and our future customers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Step 1: Scan for Viruses

===================

1. Please open Internet Explorer and visit http://safety.live.com .

2. Please click "Full Service Scan" button and follow the instructions on screen to scan for viruses on your computer.

3. When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Step 2: Remove Trojans or viruses via Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

==================================================

1. Download freeware Anti-Malware Remover (Free Version) from

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.

2. After downloading it, please double-click the downloaded file to install it.

3. After installing it, please launch it to scan and remove Trojans or viruses.

4. After it finished, restart the computer and check whether the issue persists.

Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If not, please proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Uninstall security programs

==========================

Temporarily uninstall all the security programs such as Norton from the system to check this issue. To remove the third party applications from the computer, please follow the steps below:

1. Click "Start" and double click on "Control Panel".

2. Double click "Add or Remove Programs".

3. Look in the list for any third party Antivirus and Firewall applications such as Norton, AVG, Zone Alarm, Trend Micro, Panda Software, etc. and remove them one by one. Please understand that we are removing these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can reinstall these programs after we finish.

Now try Windows Update to see if the issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved it. If not, please proceed to the next step.

After that, please access the Windows Update website to check this issue. If the problem still exists, please help to collect the following information for my further research:

How to collect System Information:

===========================

1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type in "MSINFO32" (without quotations) and press "Enter" to start System Information.

2. On the "System Information" window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save as"; save it as an NFO file, such as "system.nfo" to your local Desktop.

3. Locate the file, right-click on it, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

I highly doubt that it would be due to malware. More possible explanation is that either mcafee didn't get removed fully or that windows is corrupted.
