Cannot update S&D

hello, this is my 1st post, so I hope I am posting correctly.

When I try to update my S&D 1.6.2.46, the update screen comes up for about 30 seconds, then just goes away. I believe I do have an issue, because my internet explorer ver 6.0.2800 has become extremely slow. It uses up to 99% of my CPU.

How long weren't you able to update Spybot?
Do you have Signs of Malware (http://www.virusvault.us/signs1.html)?
