View Full Version : Hijack.Taskmanager + Hijack.Regidit
Hi, any help & guidance appreciated - unable to remove the above plus at the same time unable to access internet via any browser (Firefox or I.E), however can access via Skype & outlook. I.E fault message referring to port errors. Log below, thanks:

Reboot.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and tell me if IE works now?
Hi Shaba, thanks for your reply - did as instructed and now able to open IE (took a while to open) but not able to open my favoured browser Firefox.

Yes there is unfortunately now something else.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Hi Shaba - not the news I was hoping for! Which trojan is it?
considering the PC is used for business perhaps an OS reinstall would be the best approach however its a Dell machine with no OS disc (so may take time to work out).
Also, the desktop itself is around 4-5 years old so a new machine entirely may be the best plan or is that 'over-kill' Shaba?

Dell should have recovery partition so you can use that.
Avast picked it up on a reboot now so at least its deleted on start-up.
I'll try the reinstall OS route - I am concerned that once reinstalled, the first reconnection to the internet will result in reinfection (I'm assuming that the OS will need updating immediately considering its 3 years old - XP Pro).
Also, intending to back up data to a portable hard drive - how can I be sure the HD won't also be infected?

It shouldn't if you enable windows firewall and install avast (you can copy avast installer to external hd) before connecting.
I don't recommend to backup anything else than pictures, documents and so.
Hello Shaba - I reinstalled XP Pro, made sure windows firewall was enabled, downloaded avast (I had to go online to do this as the installation wouldn't load without doing so), ran all MS updates and everything appeared fine.
This morning after start-up I'm unable to access the Task Manager (default message say ing I don't have Admin permissions) - this is exactly what happened on the old OS with virus. Concerned that its re-infected, log file below, anything suspicious?? Thanks.

Please take registry backup with ERUNT before that as instructed in FAQ if you already haven't.
Thanks, I'll try it now - will this remove the trojan? Do you feel this PC is 'compromised' now? If it is, then I may be forced to buy a new machine but will that also become infected on the same router/connection?
I don't see any signs of infection in log.
Of course if symptoms continue, we will need to check deeper.
Resetting router is never bad idea either especially if it is wireless one.
