View Full Version : Virtumonde Returned after fix
This is a repeat of a closed thread. I had a Virtumonde infection on this machine that was worked on last week. My helper thought it was fixed and so did I but I guess we were wrong. After I turned off and then restarted the computer I ran Spybot S&D and it came back with the exact same Virtumonde in the exact same place. I tried a few times to run Spybot and Malwarebytes to see if I was imagining the problem but it came back on each restart. I let Spybot fix problem and Malwarebytes found no problems and neither has Norton for that matter. Spybot opens upon restart. I have not turned on tea timer yet. I have posted JHT and Spybot printouts below. Thank you for your help last week and I am sorry I am back so soon. I never even finished protecting my computer before the problem returned.

Hi goner
Your Spybot is old.
Please install latest spybot, rescan with it and tell me if it still finds something.
Hi Shaba,
I did an update and it is now 1.5.2.20 detection update 8/12/2009. If this is still not correct please let me know. I will run the application now and then restart and run it again. The problem always seems to come back after restart. I will post the two scans in my next message. Please let me know if I am not on the right track. Thank you so much for taking up my case.
You will need to update Spybot itself as well.
1.5.2.20 isn't latest version, 1.6.2 is, link (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)
Shaba, Thanks for letting me know. I am in the process of downloading the correct update and will retest. I am a little surprised that the Spybot update did not let me know I was on an older version. Should I run it with or without the tea timer activated?
TeaTimer disabled, please.
Hi Shaba,Well updating Spybot sure made a difference. It did not detect Virtumonde but it found a whole bunch of cookies. I thought all of the cookies had been removed and I really had not been doing any surfing so I am not sure how they all got there. Anyway, I had done the scan with the tea timer on before I had gotten your message. I will paste the post below but I will also reboot the computer and redo the scan to try and make a better base line. Another interesting thing, the scan took only about half as long as it used to.:)

This (http://www.spybot.info/en/faq/37.html) should help in the future.
Some other issues left?
Hi Shaba, I turned off teatimer, restarted computer and ran spybot again, This time it found two bad bookmarks but at least no Virtumonde. Does this mean that the previous version of Spybot was finding false positives for Virtumonde? I have no idea what the infected bookmarks are. I asked Spybot to fix, does that mean the bookmarks will be removed? Whatever they are, I am sure I can live without them. Should I turn on TeaTimer now? I hope this means we are done. In any event, thank you very much!

I might mean that either Spybot is unable to fix it or it is false positive.
Are there any suspicous bookmarks in Firefox?
Hi Shaba, I checked bookmarks and can not find it so I am running Spybot again and I am willing to try other programs. Should I try Adaware? Is there any other tool I should be considering? My concern is that it will mess with my computer latter on. Do you agree?
Then I suggest that you remove every bookmark you are not sure about and scan again with spybot afterwards.
Hi Shaba, This is becoming more difficult then first appeared. I use two log ins on a routine bases and they both have firefox and IE that I can use. Spywareinfo shows up in all four places. I have removed the entry in all four places and run Spybot. It returned it was found in firefox of desk5. That should be tough because I removed all favorites. What next? The Spybot post is below.

Is it link for spywareinfo.com?
In a word..YES. I hope you know what to do now.
Please see here (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks), delete that bookmark and all bookmarks-(date).json files.
Let me know if it helped.
Hi Shaba,
I could find no jason files nor do I understand how they are used. I did readi some info on them and I guess they have to do with Java. After trying several different ways to remove spywareinfo, I think it is gone. I read as much info on it as I could and I think it comes down to it once was a good site but now it is bad. I could not find out what kind of malware it was or what harm it could do. Could you tell me that? I am concerned that it is sleeping somewhere and will show up again. So I guess I will just run frequent Spybots and contact the forum if it shows up. Thanks for all of your help. It is nice to know there are people like you all in this world.
Thing is that it was once a legit site. Domain got expired and bad guys registered it. So now worries.
Still some issues left?
