Hello, and I apologize again for posting in an incorrect format earlier. Since I have created the Hijack this logs the trojan has downloaded windows antivirus pro as well as another malware, the first of which is preventing me from running any programs, other than internet (also including control panel functions). It also gives me a blue screen reboot when I attempt to enter into safemode. I have removed the wordwrap from the existing HJT logs, and am unable to create new ones so I hope they are useable. Thank you again.

HJT Log:

DO NOT start any new ones at this time.

It also gives me a blue screen reboot when I attempt to enter into safemode.
BSOD's come with an error message, post that error message word for word.
There is also no reason to enter Safe Mode now unless I request it.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

Read and follow alll directions carefully.

1) Right click MyComputer then click Properties. On the General tab in the lower right corner is the RAM, post that information.

2) I would like to see a scan results using MBAM, if you still have the program, there is no need to download. Be positive you update to at least:
Version 1.40 (Database 2610 8/12/2009)
and run the program as instructed.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Tutorial if needed:
http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php/topic,5946.0.html

Recap: post the error message from BSOD (if you have it), the RAM count, the log from the MBAM scan and a new HJT log created after all the instructions are complete.

Thanks

Hello and thank you for your speedy help.

When I right click on My Computer, my computer does nothing now. Since the program windows antivirus (which seems to be a very annoying hostage malware) it wont let me run any of my programs (the program seemed to come right after I disabled tea timer). Since that point I have been unable to access the programs or higher functions of my computer. The BSOD flashes away too quickly to read it, less than one second and then my computer goes into a reboot.

The windows antivirus program used to give me a prompt each time I tried to open a program saying something to the effect of "Windows cannot open this program because it is infected. Please activate your antivirus." Now since I last booted it seems to just not do anything when I attempt to open programs. Upon attempting to access some control panel functions, such as add/remove programs for the ones you mentioned, it does nothing, and at one point gave me an error message stating that svchost.exe had to close.

I did run MBAM when my computer was only infected with the Trojan, and don't recall it turning up any threats. I do have the log from that scan and will post it in a new message (since it is on the infected computer).

I have not been able to run MBAM/HJT/SB S&D/anything since the new malware.

Understand that the junk hackers placed on the computer is blocking the tools you must run. There are few options, either get the tools to run to clean the junk or reformat the computer.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

Try combofix just the way the instructions say first. If it will not run, then delete that copy and download it again like this.

You must rename it before saving it, save it to your Desktop.

I have downloaded combo fix and attempted to run it as instructed. All attempts to open the program resulted in a quick flash of the screen, followed by a small command prompt window that went away to quickly to read. This was the same with other programs I attempted to run, as before.

I am in the process of reformatting my computer now. I have backed up some files onto some spare flash drives. They haven't been connected to anything, and if needed I will just destroy them and loose my data. What are the chances that the trojans/virus' have infected the jump drives? They are data files only, no .exes or html docs or any bookmarks. Should I trash these to be safe?

Hi,

Phil is unable to respond and if you don't mind I will be helping you.

Go to this site RootRepeal (http://rootrepeal.googlepages.com/)

Scoll down until you see the Download heading. You can download it in either RAR or ZIP format. Use whatever is easiest for you.

Extract the RootRepeal.exe file from the RAR or ZIP.
Disable your antivirus, antispyware, and firewalls before continuing or they may block RootRepeal from running properly.
Now run the RootRepeal.exe program by double clicking on it.
On the botton click the Files tab and then click the Scan button
A Select Drives form will open. Select all of your drives by checking the boxes and then click OK.
It will start scanning. Wait for it to finish. It can take awhile depending on how many drives, how many files, how many folders...etc. Be patient.
When it finishes, click Save Report and save it somewhere you can easily find it (like your Desktop)
Name it NRRlog.txt
Copy and Paste to log into this thread.

Hello Ken,

I wanted to update you on my issue. I went ahead and did a clean reformat, rather than worrying about weather I had cleaned everything out or not. This was actually a good thing as it gave me an oppurtunity to upgrade my OS and re-partitian my drives. I downloaded a program (can't think of the name right now, but something with flash in it, and I believe it was actually you who recommended it) that was recommended to another user to clean his jump drives/ext HDD, and was able to extract my data off of my drives. Everything is in smooth working order now.

Did you want me to run RootRepeal anyway knowing that everything has been reformatted. If so I will be more than happy to run and post the results to make sure everything has been cleaned out. Please let me know if it is still necessary to run this tool.

Hi,

No, but you can post a new HJT log and lets make sure everything is in order.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.

Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Submit Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi,

Looks like you in good shape. Don't know if your aware of it but when you upgraded to Windows Vista, you installed the 64 bit version. You will find that some programs will not run on 64 bit, we have some cleaning tools in our arsenal that we cant use on account of this. So watch your Ps and Qs and stay clean or help could be limited.

How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

I have created a restore point and reviewed the helpful information you provided. Thank you again for all of your assitance.

I do realize the potential for conflict using the 64 bit version of windows. I have already run into one conflict trying to run Outpost Firewall, so I am now using Comodo instead. I am going to be very vigilent about keeping my data checked and backed up to a separate partition and then backed up to external drives. I am hoping that by the time I have any issues like this in the future, there will be more support for 64 bit OS's.

Thank you again for all your guys's help and time!

64 Bit is becoming more popular all the time, most of the Computer vendors like Dell offer it, sometimes there is no choice, Vista 64 bit or nothing. There is more and more software being written for it so just hang in .

Take Care,

Ken :)

Hey Ken,

I just did an update and new scan with MBAM. When I originally had it installed and scanned after a reformat it showed no results. This time it found hijack.display properties as a registry entry. I have search topics on this issue and most say that it is a false positive with vista 64. These threads were fairly old, so I wanted to check. Here is the MBAM log and I will repost a new HJT log.

Here is a new HJT Log, Please let me know if i should post the MBAM log.

Hi,

Your log looks fine .

uTorrent. <-- Just want to give you a heads up on P2P programs, your downloading a file from an unknown source, you never know whats attached to that file, its like playing Russian roulette malwarewise.

We have noticed that many people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we changed our malware forum's policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programs, volunteer analysts will refuse their help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/...ID-theft_1.html (http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html)

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

Take care,

Ken :)
