I used the "Smitfraud:SpyAxe, SpywareFalcon, and other desktop type hijacks" 10 step program posted by tashi. Seems to have worked, please let me know. And THANK YOU!

Does anyone know about this program? There are 3 versions on my laptop. I noticed them b/c my firewall (zone alarm) notified me that it was trying to reach the internet.

Hello and welcome to the forum. The Smitfraud trojan is constantly changing to stay ahead of our removal efforts. To be sure, the version you are using is several issues old. Please remove all of the Smitfraud tools, and download it fresh from the link provided and post the results as instructed. I will know more at that point, thanks.

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://www.geekstogo.com/modules.php?modid=5&action=download&id=80) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

OK and thanks, looks like all of the Smitfraud is gone unless this is newer than the fix, and it is updated almost daily.

Do you own C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\ ?

1) Windows Defender may block the fix, turn it off until you are done:
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

thanks. Great stuff. I have completed my tasks. Zone Alarm does not alert me to 73a2c929.exe now (it was just after start-up). Machine is running pretty well. What was 73a2c929.exe? Nothing pops for it in Google except this thread...

I do not own C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\ ?
In fact there is no C:\Program Files\Webroot (anymore?).

I plan to run AVG-Anti-Virus, ZA-Firewall, and Defender-Spy. Do you have any recommendations?

Hi Dave, let me say that we all start as rookies. If someone did not take the time to help me some years back, I would probably still be one...lol.

When we run into an item like that we call it a random named trojan. You can always use free online scans to get more information:

SpySweeper is a good product, but once the trial is over it just uses resources and give no benefits. Uninstall it in Add Remove programs.


I plan to run AVG-Anti-Virus, ZA-Firewall, and Defender-Spy. Do you have any recommendations? Those are all good programs, the one thing I like to suggest, if affordable, is a hardware router like perhaps Linksys with a built in firewall for extra protection. I will give you links from experts shortly that will offer additional valuable information.

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
