View Full Version : AV Care, something preventing protections from running

I was browsing the other day and AV Care installed itself on my computer...nasty pop-ups, fake scans, you know the drill. It didn't show up in my add/remove program list, but I ran a search and was able to delete it...I think. I haven't had any pop-ups since then, but on my next boot, all my safeguards appeared to be uninstalled. My antivirus/antispyware wouldn't reinstall from the CD, and it only partially downloaded from the website. (A Webroot window still comes up when I boot, and it shows in my system tray [as "loading...", but nothing more], but I can't open the program, and it invariably says that the installation failed and I should re-install). I can't run SpyBot at all (not from the .src file, not by renaming it, and not in safe mode)...same for Malwarebytes.

I've done all in my extremely limited power I can to fix it, but I think I need some real help here. You're my only hope. I've been unable to run any fixes, but here's the Hijackthis log:

Hi JustSomeGuy

Download gmer.zip (http://gmer.net/gmer.zip) and save to your desktop.
alternate download site (http://hype.free.googlepages.com/gmer.zip)

Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial105.html) for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial106.html).
When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
Click on the Rootkit tab.
Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html)"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

First of all, thanks for taking the time to help my case.

But...It didn't work. I could download gmer, I can extract it, but I can't run it. When I double-click it, I get the little hourglass for a moment, and then it disappears and nothing happens. (That's the same thing that happens when I try to run any of my other protections.) I tried to run it manually, but Windows Explorer said it could not find gmer.exe (even in Safe Mode). I did a search, and it shows up two places (the zip and the unzipped folders), but it just won't run.

I forgot to mention in my original post that as soon as I got the AVCare pop-up, I ran a Webroot scan. Halfway through, I got bluescreened and automatically restarted...sort of. It got as far as the welcome screen immediately before the desktop, but no further. I tried again, and when I got in, that's when I noticed that my protections had been removed or unresponsive. I'm not using my computer much lately, but the welcome freeze happens about half the time I boot up.

Back on topic, I tried to unzip gmer again, just to be safe. It worked, but when I opened the folder, I got a notification that "Windows Explorer encountered a problem and needs to close. Please tell Microsoft about this problem," immediately followed by the same thing for "DrWatsons Post Mortem Debugger." I tried to send an error report, got frozen, restarted, and came back here.

What should I do now?

Please rename gmer.exe and try again.

Renaming didn't do it for mbam or spybot, but it did the trick for gmer. After the scan, it said that it detected rootkit activity had made changes to the registry (I think), or something to that effect. Here's the log:

We will continue with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
If you need help to disable your protection programs see here. (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record here, but ComboFix won't run either. If I double-click, the hourgalss appears for a moment and then disappears, and nothing else happens. I don't see it in my program files, so I can't rename it either. I tried to run it manually, and again, "Windows Explorer cannot find combofix.exe." I downloaded it to my desktop as instructed, and then again to a different folder, but neither works.

Interesting development: I opened up my task manager and tried to run ComboFix via the New Task button. That opens a new box that lets me type in whatever I want to search for: programs, folders, documents, or internet resources...I'm sure you techies know what I'm talking about. I found that by entering only one letter, I am able to see a rather lengthy list of webpages that I know I have never visited or searched for. I'm more than a little concerned about this, so now I'm even more motivated to get this problem solved as quickly as possible.

Oh, and there may be a problem with disabling my protections while ComboFix is running. As I've said, I can't even open them, so I can't get in to turn them off. I'm pretty sure that the installation is damaged to some extent, so they might not even be active or running.

Should I just delete/uninstall MalwareBytes, Spybot, Webroot, and Spyware Blaster completely? And if I do, do you need a new HJT or gmer log before I go on with ComboFix?

Please save combofix.exe to desktop, rename it (right-click - rename) and let me know if it runs now.

My bad...I thought renaming the icon on my desktop only renamed the shortcut, not the application. Renaming it worked, so here's the ComboFix log:

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

File::
c:\windows\system32\minix32.exe

Folder::
c:\program files\Windows Antivirus Pro

Registry::
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"minix32"=-

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"minix32"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Empty these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\AntiVirus 2007\Quarantine
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

Slight problem...I can't seem to find the Symantec/Norton quarantine using the path you specified, nor does it show up when I search for it.

I did empty the other two quarantine folders, and I can open and run my various protections. Everything seems to be in order now. Should I uninstall ComboFix, gmer, or anything else?

It is likely hidden.

See here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html) how to unhide them.

Alright, I found the hidden Symantec folders and emptied the quarantine.

However, there's still something wrong with my Webroot Antivirus/Antispyware. It still tells me that "the installation has been damaged" and that I should "reinstall the product" at every boot. I have re-downloaded and installed it, and it seems to go ok, but after I restart at the end of the process, I get the same error message.

Then I think that it is best to contact Webroot support.

If you like, you can of course try before that if you can install some free antivirus below (that we can see if it is webroot related issue or related to antivirus programs in general). If you choose to do it, please uninstall Webroot first:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

I've downloaded AVG and it works just fine. I'll see how I like it, maybe try one of the others you recommended, until I can get the Webroot situation resolved.

I think I'm in shape now. Do you need anything else from me?

Thanks for the help.

Glad to hear :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://www.lognrock.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6926)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://www.lognrock.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6913)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
