Hi. I seem to have picked up a problem of some sort which seems to be recurring even though I get messages saying it has been removed. Sometimes the tools I have run to clean it do not even find it. I have Spybot and free versions AVG, Malware Bytes Anti Malware, Super Anti Spyware, Zone Alarm and Ad-Aware installed with the latest updates.

Sometimes when I boot I see numerous iterations of dos command type windows popup and then go away.
My IE8 browser also seems to get redirected on many of the links I attempt to bring up.
Also it seems all my restore points prior to today in System Restore are no longer available.
I am not sure if this is all being caused by the same thing.
I do recall seeing a popup yesterday (when I first started having problems) about My computer but I killed the window from Task Manager as I recall

I ran the ERUNT registry backup tool as noted and deactivated the Spybot TeaTimer. The Hijack This log file follows this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello dakotasjag

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Be sure to follow the instructions, Combofix will not run unless its renamed.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

I reactivated the my Firewall, AVG and such..... I think I created the new Hijack This log after doing so. Now that I think about it I believe I still need to restore my Windows Defender settings.

With your help its looking like this problem may be solved. My System Restore seems to be working again and I did not notice my IE8 being redirected for the last few URL's I tried. Also did not see the black cmd window type screens flash by when I rebooted the second time after running Combo Fix. Hopefully after verifying the logs you will be able to say or let me know what else I need to do to be rid of this.
Sure wish I knew how I picked it up so that activity will not be repeated.
Thanks again

Hi,

Do this first...Important

Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled, do not turn it back on until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Please do not proceed until the TeaTimer is disabled

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

These may be gone

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

You have SuperAntiSpyware installed, open it , check for updates and run the scan removing all it finds.

Then post the SAS log and a new HJT log please

Good Evening Ken,

I deactivated the Spybot Teatimer and ran Hijack This.

None of the 6 entries containing SKYNET were present on the panel where you check the boxes prior to hitting the "fix" button.

Here is the latest Hijack This log.....

Rest of your log is looking good :bigthumb:

Lets run this free online virus scanner to check for leftovers

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hi Ken,
I reran Hijack This and was successful with eliminating the No File entry as you indicated.

I am not having much luck with eset. I tried unsuccessfullu about a dozen times.

When I click the link in the post I get a msg that the site cannot be found.

When I go to a goole page and search on ESET Virus Scanner I get to the proper URL, hit the start button, then the EULA screen comes up which I accept.

When it trys to run a new page comes up with a light blue background but it is empty and below in the lower left it says "Done but with errors on the page"

I never get a prompt relating to allowing Active X to install or run. So I then went into my browser and enabled some Active x stuff but still no success.
I have since reset those Active X items that I enabled since I got messages indicating I would be at risk with those settings.

Im not sure sure what to try at this point to get ESEt runnng.

Thanks.

Hi,

Lets try this other one.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) or from Here. (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
This will start the program and scan your system.
The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.

Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As

Hi Ken,
I am not having much luck with running Kaspersky either. The 2 links in your post bring me to scanners that appear to be in Russian.
So I brought up a Google page and searched for it. I get the English version (Running it from IE8) and then the program checks my configuration. When that completes it tells me I need at least Java version 1.5 installed. I have Java version 6 installed and I believe it is update 15. I tried it 3 times and got the same message. So then I tried to reinstall Java which was successful and I confirmed it in Add/Remove programs. Tried Kaspersky several more times and it still does not recognize that a version of Java greater than 1.5 is installed.
I then tried Kaspersky from a Mozilla browser and got a bit further. It made it to the update screen, took quite awhile as the updates were loaded and then failed with an error msg indicating the "Antivirus bases have been updated after key expiration. License check failed.
I closed it and tried again and once again it started downloading the updates but eventually came back with a non descriptive msg saying Update failed restart the program and try again.
Oh I should mention that I did disable my AVG program based on the warning messages I saw on one of the Kaspersky pages about other AV programs causing problems with the scanner.
Any suggestions!

Hi Ken,
Sort of looks familiar but I am not sure. As I recall when I came to a page that looked like that and I hit the scanner button it brought me to a Russian language version..... so perhaps this is one I have not tried.

At any rate I just tried it now (twice) and when the download starts to run I get....

Launch of the Java application is interrupted! Please establish an uninterrupted Internet connection for work with this program.

Good morning Ken,

Yes, I tried that link the other day...... and again this morning (2x).

For some reason I still get messages about Java that stop it from completing the download.

Nothing else is having problems with Java so I am not sure what is going on.
Im hoping it is not related so some infection hosing me.

thanks

Lets update your Java

Go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) click on About and you should have Version 6 Update 15, if not proceed with the instructions.

Download the latest version Here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) save it, do not install it yet.

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 15 <--The wording is confusing but this is what you need

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java
Reboot your computer
Install the latest version

You can verify the installation Here (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml)

Then try ESET again,

Hi Ken,
I already have Java 16 update 15 installed. I just verified it (Build 1.6.0_15-b03).

I brought up eset and once again got a blank light blue window and no prompting to run Active X .....but this time I saw a real small white box with a red x on the page (Something I am running somewhere must of been blocking it.... I see those little red x's in a white box lots of times especially in my e-mails...... and usually I get prompted as to whether or not I want to accept it or not) I clicked the little box it and the eset license panel came up after a little bit.

After accepting, the download and scan commenced and finished in about 1.5 hrs.

No problems found fortunately....... here is the log ----

Hi Ken,

Im hoping Im back to normal. My IE browser no longer gets hijacked and my System Restore is working again. Those were the problems that first surfaced when I was hit by the Skynet malware. So Im good along those lines.

My hard drive seems to be chattering quite a bit and my Mozilla browser seems to be taking a long time to come up.... also it is missing a few icons I put on the Navigation Tool bar (such as the icons for Bookmarks, New Tab, and New Window) before I started having problems. Those are just minor issues hopefully with just Mozilla and not malware related.

Im also assuming some of the chatter on the drive is some of the programs running in the background that were added to resolve this malware issue. I did notice that one of those programs is in my Startup folder -- ERUNT Auto Backup.

Is there anything that I installed that I should now uninstall?

I still dont know what I did to trigger this problem but hopefully I wont do it again anytime soon.

I really appreciate all your help on this.

Thanks.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
