View Full Version : Zlob.Trojan- possibly...

Hi everyone,

this is my first time posting on this site, but was hoping you could help me.

A few days ago i started having problems when right-clicking on files in windows explorer. first the data execution protection window would come up saying that the program had to be closed (i had never encountered this before), then windows explorer would say it had encountered an error and had to close. following this a message would appear saying that Dr watsons postmortem debugger had encountered a fatal error and had to close. any program that i tried to open after this also said it had encountered an error and had to close.

after searching on the net, and seeing that a virus was suggested as a probable cause, i did a scan with spyhunter (yes, probably not a good choice, but done anyway) and it came up with Zlob.Trojan and Zlob.videoaccess. I run winxp sp3 and frequently do scans with symantec antivirus, spybot and adaware, none of which have ever picked anything up other than cookies. I then downloaded AVG free, and it didn't come up with anything either.

so, below is my HJT log, windows is up to date as are the anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. I have also backed up the registry. I also ran the free windows registry cleaner, but ignored everything.

sorry for the essay, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

cheers, Malta.

Hi,

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Hi,

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

µTorrent
eMule

I'd like you to read this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

After that:

Delete these folders:
c:\program files\Error Repair Professional
c:\program files\Free Windows Registry Cleaner

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.1 + updates 9.1.2 and 9.1.3 for it) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Check here (http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/) to see if your Flash is up-to-date (do it separately with each of your browsers). If not, uninstall vulnerable versions by following instructions here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html). Fresh version can be obtained here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).

Uninstall following vulnerable Java:
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.

The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.

You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run

Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives

Click on My Computer under Scan.

Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.

Click on Save Report As....

Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Save this report to a convenient place.

Copy and paste that information & a fresh dds.txt log into your topic. Any issues left?

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.

If you need a tutorial, see here (http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif)

Hi,

thankyou again for your help, and sorry for my delay in replying- it took Kaspersky a while to run!

so i uninstalled those programs and did everything else. Kaspersky only detected one threat, as shown in the following log file. so should i be manually deleting this file? the only thing is that it is located in symantec's quarantine folder, but symantec doesn't say that it has anything in quarantine. anyway, i still have the problem of windows explorer encountering an error when right-clicking on any avi file or when trying to view one.

following are the kaspersky and dds reports:

anyway, i still have the problem of windows explorer encountering an error when right-clicking on any avi file or when trying to view one.
Does the error give any details of .dll file causing the problem?

hey,

i've deleted that file and still have the same issue. the error report mentions several .dll files, 188 actually, but i can't read the error reports to know what it would be pointing to as the issue. i can paste a copy of the txt file that was going to be sent if you like.

sorry i'm not much more help, but this problem only occurs with avi files. otherwise the computer is running normally.

cheers, Malta742

You could try to uninstall ffdshow to see if it helps.

hi,

i uninstalled ffdshow and yes, the problem has stopped! yay! but do you know why it would suddenly cause a problem after running fine on the computer for about a year? just curious to know for future reference :)

Thankyou for your help, it has been very appreciated!

Cheers, Malta742

Glad to hear that worked :)

It's possible that something that you've installed lately messed up with the ffdshow installation. I don't have experience of codec packs. Personally prefer VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) that comes equipped with needed codecs. Saves me from a headache :)

Let's remove some of the tools I made you to install.

Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

You may delete DDS and related logs too.
