Hello.

Thank you for your assistance. I have read and followed the instructions in the READ This ... posting. Here is a little background before the HJT file.

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1501
OS: Windows XP SP3
Symptoms: Started a week ago. Upon starting Windows, a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem ..." dialogue appears with [Send Error Rpt] and [Don't Send ..] options.

Checked my virus protection and found both McAfee and AVG installed, neither running properly. Deinstalled McAfee, updated AVG.

I've run AVG and Malaware scans that say there is a SHeur2 trojan. Had these apps either delete/clean-up the errors or move to virus vault and deleted. Subsequent executions of AVG scan still show infected files.

I have 4 USB sticks that I use with this laptop that might also be infected - don't want to stick them in any computer right now to find out :-)

Here is the HJT log:

Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

Do you recognize the following websites?

ultraflightradio.com

guardyourselfnow.com

Subsequent executions of AVG scan still show infected files.

Where does AVG say these infected files are located?

Step # 1 Download and run DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Step # 2: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.

Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.

GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked. Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The two DDS Logs (DDS and attach.txt)
2. The GMER Log

Hello km2357 and thank you for your kind help.

Here is the requested information:

1. Yes, I do recognize the 2 websites

2. I just looked at the last AVG Scan log (from Aug 21) and it says I don't have any infected files. The scan I had run an hour prior to that indicated four -- 3 were trojan SHeur2.AVZS in C:\Documents and Settings\Dale\Local Settings\Temp. The other was trojan Downloader.Generic8.BILN in c:\cuopy.exe. I had moved them all to the Virus Vault, then emptied the Virus Vault. So why did I say AVG was still reporting viruses???? Maybe it was behaving odd?? I don't recall, sorry. I hope I am not wasting your time.

3. You asked me to "disable any script blocker" before running DDS but I regret I don't know what that means. My AVG was running when I ran DDS. I'm not sure if you want me to "post" the logs as attachments or in-line?

4. I ran GMER and it showed 2 Device and 7 AttachedDevice lines. It did not ask me if I wanted to perform a full scan. So I ran one manually as instructed. You emphasized not to interfere with the scan, so I started it then left the room. When I came back 20 minutes later, my Windows screen saver had cut in! When I logged back into Windows, the scan had stopped (nothing new was showing on the displayed log). I disabled screen saver and then reran the scan (did not exit GMER first) and went to work. When I came home, the laptop had gone into power saving mode (grr). When I logged back in, the scan had stopped and there were no new log lines displayed. Then I disabled my wireless card and started scan for the third time (again without exiting GMER - a mistake??) and babysat the scan. It completed after approx 1 hour, but did not display any additional log lines.

Again, I'm not sure if you want me to post this log in-line or as an attachment. Since the forum guidelines recommend in-line, I've posted the DDS and GMER files in-line -- please let me know if you want the attachments.

Thank you.

Thanks for all the info. :) Looking over the DDS and GMER Logs, it looks like you ran the two programs just fine.

Again, I'm not sure if you want me to post this log in-line or as an attachment. Since the forum guidelines recommend in-line, I've posted the DDS and GMER files in-line -- please let me know if you want the attachments.

Every log I ask for go ahead and post it normally. Only post it as an attachment, if I ask for it as an attachment.

From your DDS Log:

==== System Restore Points ===================

No restore point in system.

Did you disable System Restore? If you did, please turn it back on. Its better to have an infected System Restore point, than none at all. It gives us something to fall back on if need be.

Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include C:\ComboFix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis Log in your next reply.

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

Hmmm ... ok, now I am worried.
1. (not sure if related to my issue below) When I checked the AVG log as you had asked and didn't see anything, I thought I was losing my mind. So I ran an AVG computer scan yesterday, before I got your last reply. 3 viruses showed up this time:

Trojan horse Rootkit-Agent.DX in C:\jybmkssu.exe
Trojan horse Rootkit-Agent.DX in C:\jybmkssu.exe\install.exe
Trojan horse Agent2.PXW in C:\windows\system32\wbem\proquota.exe

I moved them to the Virus Vault and Removed them.

2. Today when I got your reply, I noticed the comment about System Restore. I don't ever remember turning that off, but I might have as part of some set-up/config and forgot to turn it back on. Anyhow, I didn't know how to turn it back on, so I looked for instructions. What I found said to right click on My Computer, Properties, then go to the System Restore tab. First thing I noticed is I no longer have a My Computer on my desktop -- maybe I never did, I'm probably just getting paranoid. So I did Start>My Computer>Properties, and I don't have a System Restore tab -- I have General, Computer Name, Hardware, Advanced, Automatic Updates, and Remote. The instructions said if I didn't see the tab, it was because I wasn't an administrator. Well, I checked my user properties and I am an admin (or it says I am). To be sure, I logged out from my own account and logged back into this laptop under the actual admin account. Same results.

So before I move to Combofix I think I have to figure out how to enable system restore???

Thanks for your patience

PS: Just checked the AVG Virus Vault and 2 are back in there as of 30 min ago:
Trojan horse Agent2.PXW in C:\windows\system32\wbem\proquota.exe
Trojan horse Rootkit-Agent.DX in C:\jybmkssu.exe

From what you're describing, it sounds like the malware you have may be blocking you from turning System Restore back on again.

Go ahead and run ComboFix (Remember to disable AVG before running ComboFix) and post back the ComboFix Log and a fresh HiJackThis Log and we'll go from there. :)

Hi km2357.

I ran Combofix as per the instructions. The recovery console did not install as I had disconnected from the Internet before turning off my AVG and firewall. The Combofix seemed to run fine, though it did restart Windows before preparing the log report - that wasn't in the instructions, so freaked me out for a bit until I logged back in and it seemed to pick up where it left off.

The Combofix and new HJT logs are posted below - happy reading :-)

Let's go ahead and install Recovery Console now. :)

Seems your missing an important part of your operating system. Let's get it reinstalled in case you ever need it.
Nothing is going to change on your computer other than we are going to reinstall the Recovery Console.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

At that page, scroll down and click on the appropriate download for your version of Windows XP (Home or Professional) and the service pack level that you have installed. When you click on the link to download the file, make sure you save it directly to your desktop. If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), then select the Service Pack 2 download. If you are using Windows XP Media Center, then you should select the Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 download. If you are unsure what version of Windows you have and what Service Pack is installed, you can follow these instructions to gain that information.

Click on the Start button.

Click on the Run menu option.

In the Open: field type the following: sysdm.cpl and then click on the OK button.

A screen will appear showing information about your installation. Under the System: category you should see your Windows version and the installed Service Pack.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Good morning!

Here are today's results.
1. Re: installing Recovery Console - when I did the Combofix instructions yesterday, it included steps for installing the Console manually, so I had already done that as per those instructions. I did not save that log, nor know where to find it to include in this post. But I do now see the Recovery Console option when I reboot.
2. Today when I boot I get odd behaviour that it seems like Windows has started and I'm logged in, but some things don't work and after using it for 4 minutes, then the Windows start-up music plays and everything works normally - just to let you know
3. The Generic Host Process error I had originally reported has not recurred for days.
3. Other than the Recovery Console install, I was able to perform all the other steps without incident.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9.1.3 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

If you decide to install Foxit 3.0 instead of Adobe, do the following during Foxit's Setup/Installation process:

Uncheck the following boxes:

I accept the License Terms and want to install Foxit Toolbar

Make Ask.com my default search

Create desktop, quick launch and start menu icon to eBay

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing? Are you still getting the 4-minute wait everytime you boot up? Any other problems?

Hello.

Thanks for the tip on Foxit, I've replaced Acrobat on all my computers with that.
By the way, I now have a System Restore tab on Computer>Properties :-)
The Windows start-up process goes like this: start computer, prompted to select user profile, then Windows desktop loads. About 90 sec later (just seemed like 4 min I think), the Windows intro music plays and things seem to work like normal after that. I am hopeful :-)

(I have 4 USB sticks that I use in this laptop, how can I tell if they've been infected too?)

Here are the Kaspersky and new HJT logs. Thank you.

Looks like I spoke too soon. I've been doing all of the above logged under my user account. I logged out and logged in under my husband's account. Good news is that Windows fully loaded, start-up music and all. But when I try to log off or shut down, a dialogue appears with the title Profile Storage Space and the message "You have exceeded your profile storage space. Before you can log off ..." and a list of files quickly scrolls in the display box. The Current profile size shows as 1419927 and the Maximum profile size is 10240. Not sure how or if this is related, but this was the first time I had checked out things using his account since we started having the original problem. I can't shut down the laptop with this error, so rather than doing a cold power off, I will let it sit until I hear from you.

Thank you

Since you have the computer logged into your husband's account, let's go ahead and take care of this problem first.

Step # 1: Download and run ERUNT

You will be downloading ERUNT, a registry backup tool.
For version with the Installer (http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe):
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
For the zipped version (http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip):
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.

Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note:to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Open Notepad!
Copy and Paste everything from the Quote box into Notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"EnableProfileQuota"=-
"ProfileQuotaMessage"=-
"MaxProfileSize"=-
"IncludeRegInProQuota"=-
"WarnUser"=-
"WarnUserTimeout"=-

Make sure there are NO blank lines before Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Go to File > Save As
Save File name as Fix.reg
Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your desktop.

Close Notepad, and double-click Fix.reg on your Desktop. When it asks if you want to merge the info to the registry, hit YES/OK. Reboot the computer.

After the computer boots back up, log into your husband's account and let me know if that error message pops up again.

======================

Now for your account. :)

By the way, I now have a System Restore tab on Computer>Properties :-)

:bigthumb: If you haven't already, be sure to turn on System Restore.

(I have 4 USB sticks that I use in this laptop, how can I tell if they've been infected too?)

The easiest way would be to plug each one into your computer (Be sure to hold down the Shift key as you plug in your USB Drives, this will stop the USB Drive/whatever is on the drive(s) from loading automatically.) and scan the contents with your Anti-Virus.

The Windows start-up process goes like this: start computer, prompted to select user profile, then Windows desktop loads. About 90 sec later (just seemed like 4 min I think), the Windows intro music plays and things seem to work like normal after that.

To help speed up your computer, do the following:

Step # 1: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\CLIStart.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Good morning km2357!

Thanks for the great suggestions.
1. The reg edit fixed my husband's logoff/power down problem.
2. I didn't know about the SHIFT when ataching a USB stick - thanks!
3. For some reason, my Windows login ran just fine today without the HJT changes. I made them anyhow, rebooted and it was a liitle slow. I'm thinking the delay is due to the wireless connection being established, as that is a little slow here sometimes, so no big deal. My start-up doesn't load as much junk now, happy about that, thank you. I've posted a new HJT log in case it is relevant.

The only problem I see now (and I'm not even sure if it is a problem, but it was one of the things that I saw last week that made me think I had malware) is this:

There are 3 accounts on this laptop: Dale, Jeff, Admin. All have admin role.
When I log in as any one of these and view files in Explorer, I can see that account's files under C:\Documents and Settings\account_name just fine.
But if I try to look at either of the other 2 user's files, as soon as I click on their folder name, I get the message "C:\Documents and Settings\account_name is not accessible".
So Jeff can see his files, but not Dale's. Admin can't see Jeff or Dale's files. Dale can't see Jeff's files.

I get the same results with Start>right-click>Explore and Start>right-click>Explore All Users. I thought I was able to browse/work in any folders if I was logged in with an admin level account? Is this malware or am I just wrong?

Were you able to see these other files (i.e Jeff sees Dale's files) at any time? For example were you able to see everyone's files a month or two ago? If, so then the permissions on the files/folders got changed (don't know if it was by malware or not). To see those files/folders again, you'll need to take ownership of them.

To do so, follow the instructions at the following site:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

The easiest way to do things would to read the Prerequisites section and make sure you meet all three and scroll down to the How to take ownership of a folder
section and follow the instructions there. Besides taking ownership of the folder, it also shows you how to ownership of the contents of said folder.

Thanks. I checked the Securty/Sharing settings on those folders and they had been set to Private. Removed that setting and they are fine now.

Are we, could we be, done??? :-)

If there are no more problems, you are good to go. :)

You can delete the following files from your computer

DDS.Scr
The two DDS Logs
GMER.exe
GMER.zip
The GMER Log
fix.reg

To remove ComboFix, do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u & click OK

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Make sure the C:\ drive is selected and click OK. If your computer's Hard Drive is not located on C:, change it to the correct drive letter then click OK.
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Updates (http://update.microsoft.com/) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line Anti Malware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=54#54)
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here's a good website to read about Malware prevention:

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

Good luck!

Please reply one last time so that I know you have read my post and this thread can be closed.
