Hi,
You fixed a horrible attack on my computer last Christmas, and following your better security advice, it's been 'clean' ever since. MANY thanks.
Now my son's computer has installed one of those desktop virus warnings, Spybot won't run, and I'm sure there are other things I haven't got to the bottom of........
HJT log follows. Many thanks.

Hello valeriejane
Welcome to Safer Networking.
Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
You have a real mess going on here, lets see what we can do. I would suggest printing out these instructions as you will have to have all windows closed plus your browser for these to take correctly.
Do this first...Important
Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled, do not turn it back on until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect
Please do not proceed until the TeaTimer is disabled
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Lets try running Malwarebytes in Safemode, don't let this scare you if you have not done this before, its a diagnostic mode and when you close it down and restart your computer you will be back in regular windows.
To Enter Safemode

As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Removed that line OK. But Malwarebytes won't launch even after re-booting into Safemode.
Thanks, Val

It was very fast. Val
What I would do Val is go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Malwarebytes. Then redownload and install it and try running it again.
If that does not work then try this one.
Please download SuperAntiSpyware Free (http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE)
Install the program
Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
Check: Perform Complete Scan
Click Next to start the scan.
Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next <-- Important
Then, click Finish
It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.
Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click: Preferences
Click the Statistics/Logs tab
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)
Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

After uninstalling and reinstalling, Malwarebytes still would not setup.
After downloading, I tried to run SuperAntiSpyware but it 'encountered a problem, had to close and was very sorry for any inconvenience'.
Thanks, Val
Lets try running Combofix, but it has to be renamed
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_FF.gif
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Thanks, Val
VAL,
We are on the road to recovery, what you had was a nasty Rootkit infection and Combofix removed it. This Rootkit was blocking all security programs and scans from running. I need a bit of time to look over your Combofix log and make sure there is nothing else that needs to be removed. In the meantime, you should be able to run Malwarebytes now, so open it, check for updates and run the Quick scan, post the report and a new HJT log please. I will be back early this evening.
Ken :)

That desktop red 'virus warning' has now also disappeared. Yay! Thanks, Val
Looking good Val,
Download TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop
Close any open windows.
Double click the TFC icon to run the program
TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
Click the Start button to begin the process.
Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
The program should not take long to finish it's job
Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Lets update your Java to make your system more secure
Go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) click on About and you should have Version 6 Update 15, if not proceed with the instructions.
Download the latest version Here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) save it, do not install it yet.
Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 15 <--The wording is confusing but this is what you need
Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java
Reboot your computer
Install the latest version
You can verify the installation Here (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml)
How are things running now ???

Have done all that. I don't really use this computer as it's my son's, but it boots reliably (if slowly) now without hanging, goes to the website I send it to instead of anywhere else, and the virus desktop warning is gone.
So it's improved immeasurably.
Abnything else to do before re-activating the antivirus and Spybot?
Many thanks. Val
That's great Val,
fixes.bat <--Drag this to the trash
RootRepeal <---Drag it to the trash
TFC <--Yours to keep, run it about once aweek to clean out the clutter.
Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.
Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:
Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.
Val, run this free online virus scanner to see if we missed anything.
Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner)
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
When we're done I will link you to some free programs to install to help keep you more secure. in the meantime, keep Spybot but keep the TeaTimer disabled.

Just from curiosity, tell me why Teatimer is a bad idea on this machine, please?
Many thanks, Val
Val,
What ESET found where files that where downloaded using P2P (File Sharing Programs ) and those almost 100% of the time come with bundled malicious programs. Programs like the Torrents, Limewire are all bad news and should not be used.
The TeaTimer needs to be disabled until we're all done, but read this and make up your own mind, whatever you like better.
How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
WhattheTech (http://forums.whatthetech.com/So_how_did_I_get_infected_in_the_first_place_t57817.html)
Grinler BleepingComputer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html)
GeeksTo Go (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)
Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)
Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .
Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
The TeaTimer is your call. Its a bit in your face , SpywareGuard is a little easier on you. If you enable the TeaTimer than do not install SpywareGuard but you can still install Spyware Blaster. Whatever you like better.
Safe Surfn
Ken
