View Full Version : I have the Generic FakeAlert!htm trojan

Please help! I received the Generic FakeAlert!htm trojan (I think through facebook). I attempted to download and run HiJackThis, but every time I try, I am re-directed to another site. The same happens when I try to access mcafee's website. My virus scan is noting that I have the virus in three places but is unable to fix it.

I already downloaded and ran ERUNT.

Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated!!!! :sad:

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Thanks Shaba. I will not use that computer for on-line use again. I will be getting a new one.

When I am transferring files (i.e. pictures, music) from the old computer to the new one, can I be sure that the transfer of these files will not transport the virus from the old computer to the new one?

I really appreciate your help and thank you for alerting me to the serious risks this virus poses.

You ensure by disabling autorun from target computer, link (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715)

And I also don't recommend to backup anything more than pictures and documents.
