Hi there, of all the forums I have read about this problem, yours is by far the most knowledgeable and I am wondering if anyone could help me.

I got a virus named a.exe in my Dell precision 390 w/xp service pack 3. I managed to get rid of it (or so I thought) but not before it played hell and havoc with IE7.
My AVG 3 user subscription appears to run and update ok, but when I try to run ANY type of malware/spyware (Malware, Windows Defender, Hijack this) I will either appear to start and then disappear or puke on me with the following error (windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item).

I am not sure where I got this from (not that anyone intentionally goes looking for it), I don’t use any type of P2P programs. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I have downloaded and ran ERUNT per your website and ran Hijackthis, clicking on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile button" only to have the notepad open briefly and then disappear almost as quick. :banghead:
please HELP!!

Hello SSRINC

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

It sounds like a Rootkit type of infection may be present, follow these instructions to rename Combofix or it may not run

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hi,

No rootkit :bigthumb:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/post_a4255_MBAM.PNG
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report and also a new HJT log please

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.

Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Submit Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

Hi,

Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above File::

File::
C:\DOCUME~1\Bishop\LOCALS~1\Temp\a.exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Monopod]

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Then run Malwarebytes.

Things are looking up :bigthumb:

Weatherbug <--Sometimes brings adware with it, if it was me I would uninstall it and use the program from the Weather Channel.

Hi,

One file it deleted was from Qoobox which are the backups of what Combofix removed, the other may by a macro virus.

Do this

N:\TO BE BIRNED\rpetty\OLK70\TFR 1890 Thornton Financial Care .xls <--Right click on this and select Scan with AVG, if its infected, delete it

Let me know as everything else looks fine. How are things running now ?

Ken,
Sorry for the huge delay in getting back to you, I have been laid up with a toothache all weekend. :lip:

Everything is running ok and it does seem that we are reaching the light at the end of the tunnel, however I ran the ESET scanner again it came up with

N:\TO BE BIRNED\rpetty\OLK70\TFR 1890 Thornton Financial Care .xls probably unknown POLY.MACRO virus unable to clean

The only problem is I deleted that whole folder. It wasn’t something I needed anyway and couldn’t see taking up that disk space. When I try to run Malware, I am still getting that error I posted at the beginning. Thoughts?

Sorry for the huge delay in getting back to you, I have been laid up with a toothache all weekend. <--This cant be a whole lot of fun

N:\TO BE BIRNED\rpetty\OLK70 <--Whats in this folder ?

Not following what you cant run, you mean programs we installed like Malwarebytes won't run ?

Lets try a different scanner.

Please run this free online virus scanner from Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
This will start the program and scan your system.
The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.

Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Your very welcome,

Lets update your Java to make your system more secure

Go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) click on About and you should have Version 6 Update 15, if not proceed with the instructions.

Download the latest version Here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) save it, do not install it yet.

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 15 <--The wording is confusing but this is what you need

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java
Reboot your computer
Install the latest version

You can verify the installation Here (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml)

You may want to also update Internet Explorer to version 8, its more secure than IE7. You can git it by running windows updates. Open IE and go to Tools> Windows Updates and download and install all critical updates including Internet Explorer 8

TFC <--Yours to keep, run it about once aweek to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
