View Full Version : Spybot isn't picking up infection but is DEFINITELY something wrong
Hi,
I'm an intern at a small nonprofit. There is no IT guy or anything like that, so the intern has been drafted. This computer that I was assigned is so full of viruses and problems I'm not sure where to start. I got some help here for my own computer a while back and I hope that one of the volunteers will be able to help us.
The computer had a virus before I even got here, so I'm not sure of a safe restore point (what date to restore it to). It also doesn't seem to have any sort of meaningful antivirus-- the only thing they had was a AVG that was updated months ago and wouldn't update any longer for some reason, so I uninstalled it and will install something new once the comp is clean. Managed to get Spybot, Hijack this but computer is shooting up popups when I am trying to run these programs-- same goes for Add/Remove Programs command. Lately seems to have gotten worse, is putting up popup that impersonates the Windows Security Center and a program called Windows Police Pro and after I kill it using Task Manager, it just activates again. And again and again and again.

While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into Notepad.
Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat.
Change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on fixes.bat file to execute it.
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
ComboFix for whatever reason doesn't seem to have posted a log upon completion.... it seems to have gone through the process, so not sure why no log posted.

Hi Ken,
I have looked all over but there seems to be no ComboFix log. I copied and pasted the command line you posted above, but it said no such file could be found. I also tried C:\Combo-Fix.txt because I renamed ComboFix as Combo-Fix when I downloaded it as instructed. I also used Search to look for both files. Nothing.
Is it possible that it was never produced? That seems unlikely because the program definitely ran on the computer and I didn't restart until prompted. So what now? Should I run ComboFix again?

Possible that it did not produce a log. Ne need to search, just click on My Computer , then click on C:, the log if saved would be in there.
Download TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop
Close any open windows.
Double click the TFC icon to run the program
TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
Click the Start button to begin the process.
Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
The program should not take long to finish it's job
Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

TFC should not take long at all , but some systems are finicky . Malwarebytes picked up one of the entries that should have been fixed by Combofix.
Lets run it again please. Just click on Combo-fix.exe to start the program, its been a few days, it may ask you to update it , do so.

How are things running now ?
Things seem to be running much better now. Thanks for all your help. A lot of my work here involves Google searches so the virus was annoying even before it completely took over the computer.
So, now I need to keep another virus from coming in. What do you recommend for an antivirus and so on? Ideally, it should be a set and forget sort of thing as I am not always here to manage such things. I use avira at home and have been pretty satisfied with it, but what's your opinion?

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
