View Full Version : Cannot delete spybotsd.exe file!

2009-09-08, 23:29
I recently got infected with the msa.exe virus (I believe)...I went through all the manual removal instructions I found elsewhere but still could not open spybot. Everytime I tried I would get the error message that "windows cannot access the file path specified. You may not have the right permission etc...etc..)

So I completely uninstalled Spybot and tried to reinstall and when it gets to the point where it installs the new spbotsd.exe file it can't because the old folder and the old "spybotsd.exe" file are still there and no matter what I do I can't delete the old file and therefor cannot even delete the old folder.

Below is my log file...please advise. Thanks.

I went through all the manual removal instructions I found elsewhere
It's not advisable to follow instructions given for someone else and then use those in own case :nono:

Please save this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/Win32kDiag.exe) file to your desktop. Double-click on it to run a scan. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

P.S. I didn't do any of the removal instructions I found on any of the forums here to remove that virus. I simply meant that I knew that I had msa.exe and the win32.fraudload.edt virus and I google searched ways to get rid of them and did those instructions from other sites.

I didn't come to this forum until after I removed the virus and tried to reinstall spybot which is when I came to the problem of spybotsd.exe not being able to be changed, moved or deleted because of permissions issues. Which is where I am now. I have not followed any other instructions on this forum yet except for the hijackthis program and now this win32diag program. Below is the log file created by win32diag.

Thank you in advance.

Do this part too:

Please save this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/Win32kDiag.exe) file to your desktop. Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the Open box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.
"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file in your next reply. How's the system running?

It removed 7 threats from my system but my problem still remains. The old spybotsd.exe file remains (although hidden) in the Spybot Seach and Destroy folder located in C:/program files

So I cannot finish the removal of spybot in order to reinstall to see if it is working now. I know you guys don't cover other software but whatever did this has also made AVG antivirus unable to run a scan as well.

Please advise.

Hi,

Copy this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/MiniFixes/Inherit.exe) file to same location with that Spybot .exe file. Then drag'n'drop Spybot .exe file to it. Repeat with other .exe files you have same issue with.

The file is now gone...I have re-installed Spybot and all is working fine. Thank you so much!

Glad to hear that worked :). I assume you got AVG working too, right? I can then archive the topic unless nothing else shows up.
