Recently I have been getting pop ups despite having anti spyware and popup blockers running. I'm also getting a message box "WinAntiSpyware 2006 Installer" that keeps appearing. I think this all started when Microsoft Antispyware Beta alerted me to a startup program called xapdzdvqrmh.exe which I blocked because I didn't know what it was. Can anyone help me sort these out? I'm really desparate.

Many thanks

RK

Hello RK and welcome to the forum. If you still need help, I will see what I can do.

You have a very bad program installed: C:\program files\mailskinner\mailskinner.exe see this information:
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-11815.html

We also have this item to deal with: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWAS6_0001_N69M0903NetInstaller.exe

What I would like you to do is open Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs then uninstall mailskinner and any other program that you know does not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

Use search companion to locate the pathway of this item: xapdzdvqrmh.exe and write it down if it is there. You will need that information to delete it.

Microsoft AntiSpyware will need to be turned off as it may block our fix:
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
You need to review this information once we are finished: http://russelltexas.com/malware/defender.htm

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWAS6_0001_N69M0903] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWAS6_0001_N69M0903NetInstaller.exe" -nag
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MailSkinner] c:\program files\mailskinner\mailskinner.exe
O16 - DPF: {DE22A7AB-A739-4C58-AD52-21F9CD6306B7} (CTAdjust Class) - http://www.musica.gulbenkian.pt/temp...s/clearadj.cab
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O18 - Filter: text/plain - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

xapdzdvqrmh.exe <<< file (if it is there)

C:\program files\mailskinner\ <<< folder

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWAS6_0001_N69M0903NetInstaller.exe <<< folder

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

If you have a problem deleteing any of that stuff, do it in safe mode:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

Thanks...pskelley

Hello,

I've carried out all your instructions except:
1. I could not find the file xapdzdvqrm.exe
2. I could not find O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWAS6_0001_N69M0903] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWAS6_0001_N69M0903NetInstaller.exe" -nag in the hijack this log.

Have pasted the new log at bottom.
Also, can I just ask if I should be running all these programs? I have Windows Defender, NTL Netguard, Spybot S&D as well as tons of popup blockers (google etc). could having so many be slowing the system down and letting malware through? I am really grateful for all the help you are providing!

Hello Ray and thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I am not familiar with the ntl:Netguard but I am reasonably sure your ISP would not provide it unless it is a good product. While it affords both antivirus and spyware protection, I can't see that is has a firewall, so make sure your SP2 firewall is activated in your security center. While I do not use Windows Defender, feedback I get is that it is a very good program. Spybot does not run unless you start it, so it is using no resources. You might also want to ask your ISP about these additional programs just to see what they say, but I see no reason why they should create a problem.

Your HJT log is clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Understand that many things besides malware can slow your computer, here is information that may help.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/runbetter.htm
http://www.linkgrinder.com/tutorials/10_Easy_Steps_to_Speed_Up_Your_Comp_24946_Computers_article.html
http://www.techbuilder.org/recipes/59201471

What I would like you to do is review the links, and follow the instructions to clean your System Restore files. Allow two days to pass then post a final HJT log for a last look.

Thanks...Phil

Hey Ray, I need more information about these popups to help decide where they are coming from. Please tell me as much about them as possible.

I've run Spybot S&D and each time it finds something wrong.
Please post the results of the Spybot scan so I can see what it is finding.

I would also like you to make sure the Google popup blocker in your Google Toolbar is activated.

These two items, do you know what they are? If not why don't you use HJT to remove them. I just don't see anything in the log that should be causing popups??

O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Chat - http://us.chat1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com.../c381/chat.cab
O16 - DPF: {047C3241-279D-438A-BC34-9AD1C1910FC0} (DrsDnld Control) - http://www.mathcentre.ac.uk/resource...sDnldProj1.cab

Let's take a look with a good scanner, follow the directions and post the results for me to see.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.

Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.

Now click on Scan Settings

In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:

Scan Archives

Scan Mail Bases

Click OK

Now under select a target to scan select My Computer

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thanks...Phil

Hello Phil, sorry for the delay in replying and for not posting proper info last time!

Popup blockers by Google, Yahoo, NTLNetguard are running.

The two entries you referred to are quite safe and have not caused me any problems before.

The popups I get include WinAntiVirus Pro 2006, WinAntiSpyware 2006 and Online Casino Tropez

Spybot shows registry entry this each time I run a scan:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1526743044-3454194115-305514099-1005\Software\Config

I've also ran Kaspersky, (the email scan was clean) and here are the results :

Thanks RK for that information. I understand that the vundotrojan which causes winfixer popups has come up with a rootkit installation so it does not show in the log. Atribune has updated vundofix to remove this junk, I will give you the tool after we look at the Kaspersky results.

Kaspersky: one of the better tools for finding junk not showing in HJT, it does not remove stuff free, so we must do it manually. You may have to do this in safe mode if you get Windows messages about it running and such.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html

Here are the items I suggest you delete highlited in red:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWAS6_0001_N85M1306NetInstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWAS6_0001_N85M1306NetInstaller.exe
C:\Downloads\AgeOfCastles_Setup-dm[1].exe
C:\Downloads\GoldMinerSetup-dm[1].exe

C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\Quarantine\
The complete contents of the quarantine folder .

This program (MAS) was eliminated to my knowledge when Microsoft released Windows Defender. According to this information: http://russelltexas.com/malware/defender.htm
The old stuff from MAS was supposed to have been removed during the Windows Defender installation?

This item: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D48EDD63-7501-4EE3-8D8C-C89C4AACFB76}\RP130\A0008352.exe is in your System Restore files and we will clean those out before we finish.

Once you delete that stuff, you can scan with Kaspersky to make sure you are clean if you wish.

Here are the instructions for vundofix which should take care of those winfixer popups.
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/1/

If that does not fix that problem, then try this fix for it:
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/30/2/

Keep me posted, especially interested in what works for you.

Thanks...Phil

Hello,

i'm still getting the same problems but have followed all your instructions.

Vundofix did not find any problems, and the other program asked me to reboot but the problems are still there.

i've also ran a program called a squared - suggested by bleepingcomputer. here are the results of the scan:

RK, two of these items you posted from a-squared were on the list highlited in red above that you were supposed to delete??

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWAS6_0001_N85M1306NetInstaller.exe Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.alr

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWAS6_0001_N85M1306NetInstaller.exe Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.alr

You need to review those last instructions and delete these as they are probably what is installing the junk again when we remove it.

Those other lines from the a-squared scan are no doubt bad:

Here is a good registry editor that is easy to ue. Make sure you follow the directions to back up the registry first in the even of a problem, then use the editor to remove those items.
Please get rid of the two installers highlited in red above first.

This is the tool: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

These are the directions to back up first for safety:Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

These are the directions for using the editor:
I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder,
open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked
and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within
the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything
it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly,
control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click
any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Reboot When done.

Let me know how you make out...Phil

Hello,

I am unable to find these two files:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWAS6_0001_N85M1306NetInstaller.exe Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.alr

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWAS6_0001_N85M1306NetInstaller.exe Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.alr

I did delete them first time round! I have made sure that all hidden files and folders are shown but still no luck. should I proceed with the remaining instructions?

Try making sure of this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Then use search companion to see if it can find them. It is possible these hackers are running the junk from temp, tif or Prefetch. Download this tool: http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Here is a screenshot of the cleaner: http://www.atribune.org/images/atfMain.jpeg Use these instructions:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

That should clean all hiding places, I would suggest you follow the instructions to clean those registry entries that are bad. This is like looking for a needle in a haystack, something to creating those popups? Once you have completed the instructions, run the program that was finding those installers again to see if they are gone.

Thanks...Phil

That's great Ray, let's be sure. I requested an uninstall list and you did not post it and I need to see a last HJT log to be sure. I will have some information you need once I am sure all is clean.

I can see no reason why you can't link to the forum, if you wish to be sure you should be able to contact Team Spybot here:

Hi Ray, That is my bad, I thought I posted instructions...working to many logs I guess?? Listen, look in your Add Remove programs. If you see anything there you do not know what is, let me know, otherwise you sir are good to go:bigthumb:

You have a couple of lines in this last log that are just clutter, use HJT to remove them if you wish. Windows Defender may have to be turned off:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Make sure you review the information I posted here: 2006-06-15, 07:58, especially the instructions for cleaning the system restore files.

Thanks...pskelley
