View Full Version : msa.exe, programs not opening, desktop doesn't load

Hello,
A few days ago, I noticed some random pop ups and decided to run Spybot. After a short while scanning, it stopped and wouldn't let me re-access the program. The same thing happens when I try to scan with Malwarebytes and HijackThis (and later Advanced System Care). Later, a scheduled scan with AVG finds a.exe and b.exe. In the AVG resident shield detection, there is msa.exe. Now, AVG doesn't scan but still opens and updates.
Recently, the desktop icons and the start menu disappeared, leaving me to access these forums via Task Manager. I'm not very tech savvy, so help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi butsukoy
Please save this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/Win32kDiag.exe) file to your desktop. Double-click on it to run a scan. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

Yes but that is due to borked permissions. We will fix it later.
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:
http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Initially, HJT wouldn't load up, giving the error message in my previous post. I tried reinstalling it in the same spot as before to no avail but when I installed it inside an SD card and run it from there, the program shows up and scans successfully. Here is the uninstall manager list followed by a log of the scan.

It seems like things are running smoothly now. My desktop is back and there are no pop ups in sight. I still can't access HJT (the one in Program Files) and Spybot, though.
That is due to infection; it borked permissions. Are there any other programs that don't work.

I think AVG also doesn't scan, as if its been disabled. Other than that, I think everything else works.
Thanks for update.
Please download this tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/MiniFixes/Inherit.exe
Save it to installation folder of HijackThis ans Spybot.
Drag & drop HijackThis and Spybot executables into Inherit.exe and let me know if they work ok now.

HijackThis works now, but I can't locate SpybotSD.exe in where it's supposed to be. Should I just reinstall?
Please do a search and let me know if you now can find it :)

No luck on the search.
OK then just reinstall Spybot and let me know if it works now.

During reinstall, an error message said that SpybotSD.exe was marked as a read only file and I couldn't replace it whatever option I chose. Spybot still wouldn't work after installation. I first tried to uninstall then reinstall but the same error appeared. Next, I installed it into a different folder, renaming it to Spybot instead of Spybot - Search & Destroy. Surprisingly, that worked. No clue how though.

I just switched from AVG to Avast because AVG could not scan. Upon reboot, the internet stopped working on my computer. After a good bit of searching, I found that the Avast On-Access Scanner was involved and by stopping it, I can finally surf the web and update the antispyware programs. I have no problem keeping it off, but would you happen to know why this happens?
Everything else is running smoothly thanks to you. I truly appreciate your services and would gladly recommend you guys to others having malware problems. You guys do incredible work. :D:
It might a setting issue.
Their forums (http://www.google.fi/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=3&url=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.avast.com%2Findex.php%3Fboard%3D2.0&ei=tL63SrC6O5Cb_Aaf5cmzDQ&rct=j&q=avast+forums&usg=AFQjCNGI32jaX9WuEd4de2RPsz6SeYaFbw) might help here.
Are you ready for final instructions?

Also, I appears that Malwarebytes and Spybot can not update.

Sorry for the triple post, I'll go ahead and look for more info about Avast and the others at their own respective sites so you can go ahead and close this thread.
That might be due to comodo.
Have you fully allowed those programs from Comodo?

Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date

Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
