View Full Version : Laptop has become very slow

My Compaq Presario V2310US has become very slow. Programs operate as if the CPU had been slowed down to 10% of the true speed. No CPU usage increase is shown in task manager. The OS (XP) with no applications running also uses about 500MB .

I suspect this machine may have become a LimeWire server zombie, or something similar.

I have attached a HijackThis log and would appreciate any help the experts here can give to analyze and solve this problem.

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.


Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.

I program computers for a living, so this is posted as a real issue.

Ok. Sometimes fragmented drive cause slow downs and that's why I wanted to find out if it could had been behind your issue too.

Sorry to say but I can't spot anything there. Have you run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan with updated definitions? Does it find anything?

i HAD RUN mALWAREBYTES before my originals post but, just for completeness, updated its database and ran it again. It did not find anything.

Like you, I am puzzled. I wonder if Ii have a driver incompatible with this AMD Turion 64 Processor ML28?

If it wasn't installed when the problem first occured then it may be the culprit. There're similar problems reported from other Windows Search users according to search engine hits.

Following your sugestion I have turned Windows Indexing off. It was indexing e-mail and several other things.

As a result, the computer is faster. Still sluggish, but not as bad as before.
