View Full Version : Can't open web browser, network center, or task manager. HJT Log.

This started a few days ago, and after trying several anti-malware programs, absolutely nothing really worked. I'm currently running Windows Vista Premium Home Edition SP1 64-bit.

I can't seem to access/open several things, namely the Networking Center, Backup and Restore Center, the Task Manager, any of my browsers, or even the windows Picture viewer nor close the Side Bar. I also cannot shut down cleanly and must actually cut power to my computer.

My computer also seems to be noticeably slower. Spybot seemed to have picked up nothing, but that may be due to the fact I can't cleanly close Resident.

Heres my HJT Log:

Also, just ahead of time, I already uninstalled my P2P programs a while ago, just for some reason HJT still picked up uTorrent.

hi,

Your log is several days old. Not all symptoms are indicative of malware. If you still need help reply to my post.

Arceon
2009-09-24, 04:21
Well, I'd normally would've reformatted anyway, but I was hoping the source be malware as the symptoms seemed to point to it. Disabling my web access and most of the rudimentary restoration tools. That and I seem to have misplaced my Vista CD.

I'd still like help, but if the problem isn't malware, then I seriously have to wonder what I -DID- do to my computer.

hi Arceon,

Its certainly possible malware could have disabled those items.

RE: uTorrent. there is plenty of malware that is distributed via p2p networks that one can unknowingly download and install.

I see you have Malwarebytes.

start MBAM amd click on the update tab then the Check for updates button:
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

Once the update is finished, select the scanner tab and check: Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Be sure that everything is checked, and click *Remove Selected.*

*A restart of your computer may be required to remove some items. If prompted chose yes to restart.*

When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Post the log in your reply.

Is there any way for me to download and install the Malwarebytes update without using the built in "Check for Updates"?

Currently my computer has my wireless card disabled and unable to connect to a network and I have no way of routing an ethernet cord into this room. If not I can perform a scan with it, just that it'll be using the detections of a straight install without updates of any kind.

When you first installed Malwarebytes it most likely updated, unless you unchecked that option during the install process. Just go ahead and run it with out checking for updates and post the log and we will go from there.

not much in the MBAM log. If you dont have internet access on that computer, is there anyway you could download and transfer a file from another computer via a USB drive? You have tried to re-enable your wireless connection? Have you rebooted both your modem and compter?

Arceon
2009-09-26, 16:06
Well the file transfer via USB was how I got Malwarebytes onto my machine and transfer the logs in the first place.

I've tried to re-enable my wireless connection multiple times, however, the main reason is that my auto-connect was disabled and every time I try opening the "Connect To" menu, all that shows up is a blank white window.

My computer also refuses to shut down cleanly, so a reboot isn't actually possible, and I already tried the modem.

go to Start>all programs> accessories> then click command Prompt.
In the shell that comes up you can copy paste in:

ipconfig /release

click enter

followed by;

ipconfig /renew

click enter

see if you get connectivity

Arceon
2009-09-26, 19:59
Both commands pop up with a message saying that I can't configure both my wireless and local area network settings while the media is disconnected.

no joy yet. Do this:

back at the cmd prompt type in:

ipconfig /all

click enter, right click and 'select all'
open up notepad (start>all programs>accessories>notepad)
paste the contents in notepad.

copy/paste the results form notepad

hi Arceon

open a cmd prompt again and type or paste in;

ping 209.191.93.52

you can select all and paste into notepad and post the reply.

Well, I didn't really see the point in copying and pasting all of it, simply put all the requests just timed out.

ok. sometimes browsers can have problems but you can still have connectivity. Looks like you dont.
We can try two things in safe mode. One is to run your anti-malware, the next is to chose 'Last known good configuration'

Just shut down like you have been, restart and tap the f8 key. First i would chose the safe mode option. once at the safe
mode desktop run your anti-malware. If it finds anything in safe mode try rebooting normally and checking for connectivity. If no joy shut down and boot into safe mode again and this time try the last known good configuration option.
see how that goes.

Huh, that was unexpected.

When booting in safe mode, all I get is a black screen with the safe mode messages along the corners and my OS listed at the top. As for the last known good configuration, I didn't see that option.

Update. I was handed a Windows 7 Disk recently so I'm more or less going to reformat and upgrade my OS from here.

Still have no idea what's going on, but I guess a reformat is the best choice considering what the state of my computer. Thanks for the help shelf-life.

Hi Arceon,

Ok your welcome. The W7 you have must be the release candidate MS released for free downloading many months ago (ending in july) and will expire in June of 2010. Happy safe surfing.
