I have been using Windows defender, but have, of late started getting these weird pop ups. So I downloaded Spybot S&D and it found several things which I clicked Fix on. Teatime and Defender seem to be conflicting with one another, so for now, I turned off teatime. My questions are these

1. Obviously Defender missed some stuff, so should I just uninstall it and go with teatime?
2. Why am I still getting the popups? There is no real identification on the windows - it's various businesses, car lease companies, registry cleaning software, etc. They come up on every web site I go to INCLUDING this one.

Oh, I am using Mozilla - never IE. My operating system is Windows XP.

Thanks for any advice.

Hello RoniSutton,

Teatime and Defender seem to be conflicting with one another, so for now, I turned off teatime.

While you should be able to have more than one antispyware program installed it's best to choose one "resident protection" to avoid such conflicts.
How Spybot-S&D protects against the installation of Spyware/Malware. (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=281)

I don't know what Defender is flagging or why, however searches for Registry Cleaners are notorious for bringing up Rogue programs.

Also: Registry Cleaners, not recommended (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=30038)

Which version and do you have a Service Pack?

Best regards. :)

By pop-ups, I don't mean the Defender windows, I mean actual pop up advertisements. They pop up even though my Mozilla is set for pop ups to be denied. They also pop up no matter what website I go to, so I suspect they are actually resident on my computer. I have never used or downloaded a registry cleaner.

My op sys is XP 5.1 with Svc Pack 3.

As the day has progressed, Defender has stopped two trojans and I am getting four to six flags an hour that I have to deny. I am sure something is loose on my computer, but I don't know what or why. I will run another Spybot scan and see if it picks anything else up.

Meanwhile, do you have an opinion as to Teatime vs. Defender?

Thanks for your reply.

Roni

Hello,

Meanwhile, do you have an opinion as to Teatime vs. Defender?

Only you can decide which resident protection works best for your own needs. ;)

If you would like someone to take a look at the system, please follow the procedure in this link:
"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Then start your own thread in the Malware Removal Forum (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) where a helper will advise you when available.

Best regards.

I posted everything I think, but when I search for my name this is the only post that comes up. I am afraid I may be hopeless.

Nevermind, I found it. Just no replies other than my own explanatory one...I'll bookmark it and keep checking back. Meanwhile, I curse the pop ups...arrrgh

If you look at the bottom of your first post in that topic you will see I edited.

Reason: Merged 2 posts as per forum FAQ Then you added another post.

Forum FAQ: "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

:secret:

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. In addition helpers would think you are already being assisted because of the post count. For that reason we may merge such posts if there is time but please do not count on it.You can subscribe (http://forums.spybot.info/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_subscriptions) to the topic and receive an email notification when a helper responds.

Once you have read this, I will merge your malware forum topic so that it shows a zero response. :)

Cheers.
