View Full Version : Total Security virus
My Lenovo laptop is virtually seized by a program claiming to be Total Security. I have read the posts from Tashi, and would be so grateful for some further assistance. I don't even seem to be able to create a system restore point!
Thank you in advance.
As noted in Tashi's posts, timely Windows updates are paramount to baseline security. This i was unaware of. I have since attempted to update the computer i am currently working from while i sort out the trauma with my laptop. Only i can't seem to get windows SP3 to download. any suggestions on this are most appreciated:thanks:
Hello aaleyth
Welcome to Safer Networking.
Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.
We will work on getting your laptop cleaned up. You need to make a separate post for you other computer. We can only work on one PC at a time as it can get quite confusing if we don't.

Here goes....i am going to do my best to follow directions here but i require computer lingo interpretations to english! I have not turned my lenovo on since the Total Security shut down, so unsure if i can get online. Also in doing a little researching with this laptop i discovered that it has this function called 'thinkvantage' that seems to have some sort of operating system 'outside' of windows. Would this be helpful to transfer some of my files etc, prior to attempting to clean up The 'total security' mess? would you be familiar with how someone does that, using 'Thinkvantage"? I have purchased an external hard drive, however i would prefer not to 'contaminate' it as well. I will be able to begin with your recommendation, unless you feel it in my best interest to attempt to save files first, tommorrow evening, or at least 18 hours from now. I have been doing my best to familiarize myself with some of the other fixes for other folks, not to try those recommendations but just to be familiar with types of languaging and tips to navigate in the most effective manner, etc. I appreciate the dedication all you who volunteer your time to assist us folks out here in cyber land who 'fall off the cliff' and get caught! I Volunteer on a crisis line so i guess we all make the world a better place in our own way. Will await your further instructions. aaleyth ps: i am communicating via my home computer at this point. When i get the Lenovo up and running again, i will follow up with the questions regarding this one. At least spybot says i am clean on this machine!
Good Morning,
Total Security is a rogue program , its considered Scareware, we need to remove it. At this point with you not posting any logs, there may be other junk also, don't know until I see some logs. So lets not back up anything to your external drive just yet, actually I would keep it turned off so as not to infect it. Lots of these rogue programs are installed by a rootkit and RootRepeal will check to see if one is present, it wont remove anything but I need to see the report and then we can go from there.
Ken
Hello Ken
Here are some logs, using rootrepeal that i was able to obtain by putting the lenovo into 'safe' mode. I had never even heard of such a thing but with some of the logs and posts here on the forum i thought what the heck. I was able to download the RootRepeal program in regular Windows but not run it until i searched out this option. I will leave it to you if i have been successful in obtaining anything useful.
I have deep appreciation for your dedication to holding a contrasting energy to those that wish to unleash mayhem!
aaleyth

Hello Ken
With the malwarebytes results removal, the items unremoved w/out re-boot did not seem to go after the re-boot. I closed aprox 8-10 windows listed as (sorry, i did not pay attention to them closely enough to recall the exact languageing) 'corrupt' individually. Next i was able to run the HJT program the resulting log of which is posted here with the malwarebytes log.
I am in the process of acquiring the log from RSIT and will send ASAP.
Stay Well!

Hi,
You basically where infected with Vundo
BitTorrent DNA
This is just a heads up, but I can 100% guarantee that if you use file sharing programs like this that you will continue to infect your computer.
We have noticed that many people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.
Because of this, we changed our malware forum's policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programs, volunteer analysts will refuse their help.
We do not ask you to do this without reason.
P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.
Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.
This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/...ID-theft_1.html (http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html)
When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.
Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: luyiwiya.dll
Download TFC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop
Close any open windows.
Double click the TFC icon to run the program
TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
Click the Start button to begin the process.
Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
The program should not take long to finish it's job
Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/whatnext.jpg
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Dear Ken
Before i proceed with your recommendations should i uninstall Bit Torrent program first?
It appears that Combofix will place a 'system console' on the Lenovo so that as i am running programs to fix/clean this Vundo virus, i have a sort of 'back door' to give me access. The question is do i do this first or is it best to proceed just as you have outlined?
Be back with you on the morrow!
aaleyth
Good Morning,
Your call on BitComet. I was away over the past holidays visiting friends and family in another state, doing what I do I cleaned FIVE computers that where infected by kids downloading music and whatever from File Sharing sites like the Torrents, Limewire and a few others. When you download that file, you have no idea where its coming from or whats attached to it, its kind of like playing Russian Roulette Malwarewise. I would never allow any programs like that on any of my systems. Our forum policy is that you uninstall it, but this is up to you, if you do not and come back infected again then help will not be offered.
As far as the Recovery Console, this is a nice feature, if you ever got into trouble it would give you the ability to boot to it to fix your system, but this to is your call, if you decide not to install it then just bypass it when you run Combofix. If Combofix detects one it will not install it.
Ken :)
Thank You Ken!
I would love to have more information concerning 'rogue' or easily exploitable sites on the net. I was totally clueless as to P2P dangers. Also i would like to be better informed as to how one might be better aware of sites that utilize these P2P files or whatever, for instance how do i detect these files prior to a download of some sort? ..... if you are willing to give me feedback or suggestions on where to get better informed.
However, what is germain at this point, is that i lack the expertise/understanding from your 'fix' recommendations as to the appropriate steps to take to best accomplish disengaging Vundo from my Lenovo.
Another question i have concerns the 'Recovery Console'. If i am understanding this feature correctly, it sounds as if i have something similar under an installed feature from Lenovo called 'ThinkVantage'. Are you familiar with this? When i was attempting to get some response from the laptop prior to connecting with you, i pressed F8 button prior to Windows load and this took me to the ThinkVantage 'program' ...? Anyway it decribed this area as a secure area where a person could have access to the computer should it come under attack or in some other way not be able to access it in the 'normal' ways. Just wondering if you can give me some feedback on this. And if the purposes are similar, do i require both features?
I apologize for having such a think skull but i was totally unnerved by this Vundo thing. I feel compelled to detail every little point until i have understanding:blink:. The good news is, just from the few suggestions you have made at least the 'Total Security' window has disappeared... somewhere! It still feels something 'lurking' just waiting for my next blunder!
aaleyth
aaleyth,
Malwarebytes removed most of Vundo, but with removing malware there is no one program that can get it all. You need to run Combofix and when it asks you to install the Recovery Console, just say no.
Here is some info about Rogues
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
Dear Ken
Firstly, i really appreciate your time and patience here with me. However, I have proceeded as per your communication at 13:22 yaesterday.
1. i opened HJT and did the system scan only.
2. scanning the list there was no O20 - AppInit_DLLs: luyiwiya.dll
3. i Next did this:
Download TFC to your desktop
* Close any open windows.
* Double click the TFC icon to run the program
* TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
* Click the Start button to begin the process.
* Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
* The program should not take long to finish it's job
* Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,

should i proceed with comboFix <--Yes, please do
Dear Ken
It seems the 'virus' got to me as well. I am still feeling a bit groggy after two days in bed but my intention is to run combo fix at least, today.

OK Thanks for letting me know. Hope you feel better soon.
Hello Ken,
Any suggestions...i seem effectively blocked by the total security windows from downloading the sights of ComboFix you put in the body of your email of 9-26-09.
Lets try this.
Please download exeHelper (http://www.raktor.net/exeHelper/exeHelper.com) to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).
Then drag Combofix to the trash and redownload it, this time I need you to rename it.
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif

Hello Ken,
Apparently, i have been unclear as to my problem....When i turn the laptop on and attempt to connect to the thread we have going here, Total Security windows block my access to the links you provided in the body of your fix recommendations. I have yet to download ComboFix. can you offer some assistance in this regard?

Hi,
What you may have to do is to go to a known clean computer, download exehelper and combofix and burn them to a CD and transfer them to the infected computer.
After you do that, run exehelper, if it wont run then rename it to explorer.exe
Then when you download combofix, make sure you rename it as per my previous instructions.
Due to inactivity, this thread will now be closed.
If it has been four days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a new HijackThis log with a link to your previous thread. Please do not add any logs that might have been requested in the closed topic, you would be starting fresh.
