Internet Woes

Hi,
My browser has stopped displaying web pages. I can ping site by both host names and IP addresses, but neither IE or Firefox will wisplay pages. I ran Spybot S&D and fixed multiple items as well as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and corrected 94 issues. After all of this, nothing has changed. I have also tried it in safe mode with networking, and it behaves the same. Any assistance would be greatly appriciated. Here is my HJT log.

Go to start>settings>control panel>internet options. Under the advanced tab click on the Reset button, Apply and Ok. reboot machine, modem, router etc

I fixed those 2 items in HJT, and ran the FixIt tool from Microsoft. I followed the manual steps in the article as well with no change. I can still ping, but get the DNS error when I open a browser. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks,

ok. post a uninstall list using hjt:

start hjt
click on 'open misc tools section'
click on 'open uninstall manager'
click on 'save list'

Save the uninstall list somewhere and post it in your reply. Try disabling your software firewall and see if you can view a page.

go to start>settings>network connections>right click on your enabled adapter, select properties and click on TCP/IP, then properties button, make sure the option to :'Obtain DNS server automatically' is checked, click apply, ok and reboot machine.

Ok, here is the uninstall list from HJT. I double checked the properties of my connection and that box was checked. I just tried it with the PC booted to safe mode with networking and I still have the same problem. This may be outside of this forum. Thanks for your help, and if you still do not mind helping, that would be great as well.

1) Look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall:

2) Open notepad and then copy and paste whats in the box below. Go to File > save as and name the file look.bat change the Save as type to all files and then save it to your desktop.

Double-click on look.bat file on your desktop. After you should find ipsettings.txt located in your root drive C: Post the saved files

3) Get and try copy of WinsockFix:

in the ipconfig.txt you can remove your ip address unless you have a router.

Howdy,

Ok, here is the ipconfig file. I removed my way my web search and ran the winsock xp fix. Still no go, but with Firefox I am now getting a message that states it is in "offline" mode, which it is not checked in the file menu. I checked it, testes and then unchecked it only for it to still say that I am in "offline" mode.

Although I disabled my firewall completely to test, it obviously did not disable completely. I found that the firewall was blocking all access to the Internet via IE and FF. Thanks for all of your assistance!

Ok good you got it going. Though it wasnt really a malware problem here are some tips to help reduce your risk;

10 Tips for Reducing/Preventing Your Risk To Malware:

Simply knowing what constitutes a safe action on a computer and what may not will help you tremendously.

1) It is essential to Keep your OS (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us),(Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities that could be exploited. Visit Windows Update frequently or use the auto-update feature. Staying updated is also necessary for web based applications like Java, Adobe Flash/Reader, QuickTime etc. Check there version status here. (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/)

2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons, like adware, toolbars and malware. Do not install any files from ads, popups or random links. Do not fall for fake warnings about virus and trojans being found on your computer and your then prompted to install software to remedy this. See also the signs (http://www.virusvault.us/signs1.html)that you may have malware on your computer.

3) Install and keep updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless. If you frequently have malware then you should review your computer habits.

4) Refrain from clicking on links or attachments via E-Mail, IM, IRC, Chat Rooms, Blogs or Social Networking Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may seem.

5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you need to install software, media players or codecs to your computer--for any reason.

8) Install and understand the limitations of a software firewall.

9) A utility (http://nsslabs.com/general/ie8-hardening-tool.html)for automatically hardening and securing Internet Explorer 8.0. Requires site registration for downloading. You can also manually make the changes yourself. Read the FAQ's. Changes some of the default settings of IE 8.0

10) Warez, cracks etc are very popular for carrying malware payloads. Avoid. If you install files via p2p (http://www.virusvault.us/p2p.html) networks then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source of the file? Do you really need another malware source?
