View Full Version : Malware removal problem
Hi,
I read your sticky and have attempted to follow the instructions to the letter. I created the system registry backup using Erunt, and then downloaded Hijack This, but the virus is preventing it from running.
Prior to coming to this forum, I had also attempted to use several other virus removal programs and the virus (or trojan) seems able to disable everything I throw at it. I even attempted a Windows System Restore, but got an error message saying that wasn't possible.
My OS is Windows XP, and my virus software is Quick Heal 10.00 which identified a trojan: \\?\globalroot\Device\__max++>9EC183F2.x86.dll (not sure if that's just one underscore or two).
I've been working at this for about 3 hours and have to rest for work tomorrow, but will check back tomorrow a.m. for any help you can offer.:thanks:

NOt sure if this is helpful, but it appears as if the trojan operates by diverting Google searches to advertisement websites (away from your expected destination). However, it doesn't seem to affect searches done in Good Search.
Thank you for your help Shaba!:thanks:

Please now run win32kdiag.exe in normal way and post back fresh log.
I'm assuming that "run in the normal way" means to simply click on the icon on the desktop and then cut and paste the new text file which appears here, which I did:

When I try to run, it says I lack user permission.
Yes infection has borked permissions, we will fix it a bit later.
Please now rerun win32kdiag.exe in normal way and post back its log :)
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Jordan Van Voast\Desktop\Win32kDiag.exe
Log file at : C:\Documents and Settings\Jordan Van Voast\Desktop\Win32kDiag.txt
WARNING: Could not get backup privileges!

Good, that one is clean.
Please reinstall HijackThis and let me know if it runs now.
I tried downloading several times, deleting the old copies, but each time I get this:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file."
Does that happen also with some other program?
Do you mean other spyware programs? Well, I didn't do exhaustive testing in response to your question, but I did redownload Sypot Search and Destroy and it made it through a full scan (Check for Problems), identified one tracking cookie, which I successfully removed.
However, that may not answer why I am having trouble with Hijack this. I will try one more time to download and run it in a moment. I'd like to be sure that whatever trojan infiltrated my system is gone permanently.
Thanks for all your time and effort. Your picture reminds me of Gandalf.
I mean any programs you have used while being infected :)
I reread the instructions for downloading Hijack this - didn't realize I need to also download the installer separately...here is the log:

Empty Junk folder from Thunderbird mail accounts and delete all suspicious mails from Inbox.
Delete this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Jordan Van Voast\My Documents\Downloads\Flash.Player.HD.45124(2).exe
Empty Recycle Bin.
Still problems?
Okay, I've deleted and emptied as you have suggested. I'm not aware of any current problems though I'm not completely sure what I would be looking for. However, the issue of having Google searches redirected to advertisement web sites does not seem to be happening. Please advise.
:thanks:
Good :)
Is Norton Antivirus installed?
No, I don't have Norton AnitVirus installed. It expired recently and I tried to save a few bucks  and purchased Quickheal for considerably less...though perhaps that wasn't a wise move.
Is QuickHeal active? I don't see it running.
I uninstalled it so that it wouldn't interfere with the other programs you had me download and use. Probably should reinstall it.
Yes please do that and post back a fresh HijackThis log afterwards :)
I am looking for a link to download it - I have my serial number and activation code, but had to email quick heal support, so I am waiting for that. Would you like me to run a system check with the quick heal and THEN run Hijack This, or just install quickheal.
thanks
Run scan with it and post back fresh HijackThis log, please :)
Hi Shaba,
I am still waiting to hear back from Quick Heal customer support (coming up on 24 hours and no response). If I end up needing to buy another anti-virus program, do you have any recommendations?
No need necessarily to buy an antivirus :)
Below are some free options:
1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.
Installed AVG Free. Ran full system Scan: It found 3 or 4 viruses, one trojan, and lots of threats (tracking cookies mostly I think). I attempted to remove/delete and it moved most of them to the "Virus vault". Wasn't sure what if anything I needed to do then so ran fresh Hijack this:

I found this on the History tab and clicked on "Empty" which it did and then ran a fresh Hijack this - which appears to have changed slightly (smaller):

Also, per your advice in the bottom of your post #33 - now that I am using the AVG free anti virus, should I uninstall Spybot, or keep that and just make sure that they aren't running simultaneously?
AVG and Spybot can be running at the same time; Spybot is no antivirus :)
Still some issues?
(that I am aware of). Does that mean my system is looking pretty clean from your end?
Yes it does :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo HopSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make HopSurf my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall/download/)
4) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Next we remove all used tools.
Please download OTCleanIt (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://www.lognrock.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6926)
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://www.lognrock.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6913)
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. See also a hosts file tutorial here (http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22187)
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:

After typing in Combofix /u, ONline Armor pops up telling me that "A program wants to run". I wasn't paying close attention and clicked allow several times, but am now am noticing that it is a different program each time. Now it is telling me that pev.exe wants to run. I googled that and it said it is part of Combofix, but I'm confused now because if I want to uninstall something, why would parts of it need to run.
Please advise....did I err in clicking on "allow" several times? If so, what should I do about it? What about pev.exe and any subsequent choices as part of uninstalling Combofix?
Here are the programs Online-Armor is asking me about - in no particular order:
pev.exe
swreg.exe
SWXCACLS.cfxxe
MSDOS (parent program is Combofix....the program name appears in the form of an icon)
PREP.inf
One needs to both "Trust" and "Allow", so even though I clicked on "Allow" before, looks like nothing happened and I can still moderate these.
I'm guessing that there will be more of these programs to trust or not.
please advise. :thanks:
They are all part of combofix.
Please do combofix /u in safe mode :)
That was way more complicated than I expected and I'm not sure whether I've actually removed Combofix or not.
Online Armor continually kept popping up with messages with the names of the programs above, and a few others, asking if I wished to allow it to run...and messages saying the program wants to run again, etc.
There were multiple boxes to choose from below and whenever possible I checked "Run in Safer Mode" (can't remember exactly the wording), but sometimes, that option was no longer available (not on the menu of choices), so I just clicked on Trust this program.
No bombs have gone off, so I am going to continue with your instructions and download OTCleanIt
I downloaded and ran this program. Upon rebooting, I got a message:
C:/windows/system32/grpconv.exe
"Windows cannot access the specified device path or file, You may not have the ppropriate permissions to access the item." [okay]
So I clicked okay, and Online Armor popped up and told me the above program was blocked and gave me options to Run Safer, Trust, Allow, Delete, Block.
I think I may have blocked it when attempting to uninstall combofix (which I'm still not sure if I was successful at doing).
Will proceed with this later, need to rest from a molecular virus (as opposed to a computer virus).:cleaning:
I disabled and re-enabled System Restore as advised. Seems like the OT CleanIT tool did not work perfectly as I had to manually remove Hijack This, WIN32kdiag (something like that), and maybe one other...but I seem to have been able to do that.
Thanks for all your help Shaba...restores my faith and hope that the forces of good are out there working for us all.:wav:
I tried to uninstall Lavasoft's "Adaware" by going to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs, but even though that program does show up as installed, there is no option to remove it. I went to the folder in my C-Drive and manually deleted most of the files inside the Lavasoft folder, but some of them wouldn't allow themselves to be deleted. Any suggestions?
