Problems with re-direction

I use Firefox. However, I opened Explorer recently and have found that Google searches are being re-directed to other sites. I have been using Spybot S&D for a long time now. I ran it after discovering the redirection and it found several items. I fixed these, but the problem wont go away. Also, Spybot is very slow to run. It takes several hours so I have to leave it through the day. Am I being affected by something called wareout? Also Norton anti-virus has problems scanning the hard drive (though that might be something else).

Are you seeing signs or wareout? If so, let's find out.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. The weird thing is that I was experienceing wareout on IE all the time. However, in the last day or so it has suddenly stopped along with all the other problems. Firefox is no longer giving me error messages, and searches on the hard drive no longer crash the system. I dont know why because Im not aware that I did anything. Im gong to run Spybot again now and see if it finds anything still. Maybe the best thing would be to wait a whiile and see if this changes.

Wareout is known to have stealth files. I would suggest you run the tool I posted up there for you and it will look for the files if they exist, and tell us what they are.

Right, I had actually run Fixwareout end of last week to see if it would do anything. I didnt realise a log had been saved. So, I'll post the first report from last week, and then the second report that I did just now. In the next post I'll post the HJT log that I just ran.

Some final cleanup and prevention recomendations follow.

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files.
Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.

Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
Click OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:

Thanks. I'll look through these.

Just one question though. In my temp folder for the main listed user, there are over 3500 files, many of them folders with files in. There is a folder called cookies for example so I get a warning when attempting to delete. Is it ok to delete all these?

Ok, let's use a more cautious approach.

Go to Start > Run ... and type in the box: cleanmgr

Wait while Windows scans your system for files to delete to free up disk space.

When it finishes it will present a list.

Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them:

Temporary Files

Temporary Internet Files

Recycle bin

Do that for each user on the system.
