To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

I downloaded combo fix but when I trried to run it a message came up that said it was corrupted. In the message box it listed the Virut virus.
The only way my computer will run is if I go into setup (F2) and turn on install OS.

Well then I don't have good news for you as install OS is the way with virut.

Virut infects files and as it is buggy, those can't be cured.

You can backup important files, but virut infects .doc, .jpg, .html, .exe, .scr, .php, .asp, .htm so you can't backup those to avoid reinfection.

After that you should reformat.

I do need help with the reformat procedure.
All of my pictures, music, and videos are stored on an external hard drive.
Will these files be affected

It depends when you have used external last time.

Do you have windows CD?

I do have a Windows CD (XP)

The external drive is always connected. Its mostly used for music and pictures.

Then chances are high that external is infected which means that you use data there at your own risk.

I reinstalled windows and while doing the updates on the windows site the computer shut down. The blue screen with the memory dump message popped up. Not sure what to do now. The external HD isn't connected.

I tried to reinstall windows again but it will not finish the install. I get an error message saying that a file will not install to retry. It fails each time.
