View Full Version : AVG and SPYBOT conflict after virus infection

subhelp

Hi,

It is a long story so please forgive me, but I want this to be resolved asap and want my pc go back to normal.

My PC : WIN XP SP3.

I had AVG before and found out that it detected one virus which can't be removed. Also When I do google search, it brings up the results but when I click on the results, it goes to different page. So I thought If I install Spybot and run scan will remove spywares. But pc was not letting me to install the spybot and then no desktop icons after restart. It just displays desktop background picture and no taskbar or icons. I have tried to go on safemode, i can only see blank safe mode screen with no icons or task bar. So tried removing the avg by downloading the avgremover from their website, which caused more problems.

Now I can only access Task manager by doing ctrl + alt + del in both normal and safe mode. I do not know the name of the virus found on my computer. But it does not let me to access control panel, user accounts, add/remove programs, security center etc. It gives an error message saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access this item". I think this virus has taken complete admin rights.

I have tried system restore to an earlier date when it was working fine. It showed desktop and was browsing and tried to check whether avg been removed or not by clicking on the control panel, back to no taskbar and no icons. Now System restore as well not working.

I can access or run only via command line. Please help to me to fix this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Subhelp,

Please save this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/Win32kDiag.exe) file to your desktop. Double-click on it to run a scan. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

Hi Blade81,

Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded that file from my laptop, as my affected computer is not able to connect to the internet.

I ran a scan on the infected computer.

Here is the log:

Hi again :)

Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here (http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger2/download.php).
Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
Click OK.
Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
Copy all of the text in the below textbox to the clibpboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.

Files to move:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\logevent.dll|C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8923/pastets4.png button.
Click the Execute button.
You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
Click Yes.
You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
Click Yes.
Your PC will now be rebooted.
Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
If that is the case, it will force a BSOD on the first reboot. This is normal & expected behaviour.
After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
Please post this log in your next reply.

Ok. Let's continue with the next steps.

Please save this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/Win32kDiag.exe) file to your desktop. Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the Open box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.
"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

I got my desktop screen with taskbar and icons. But unable to connect to the internet. I am using wireless. May be needs checking the wireless utility.

Please let me know what to do next. I am not sure whether my pc is free from virus or not. But it looks as if it is going in the right direction as I can see the icons when I couldn't see before.

Thanks again.

It is going to be a long post
I'm used to see those

But unable to connect to the internet. I am using wireless. May be needs checking the wireless utility.
You may need to reinstall wireless related things. Are you able to connect temporarily with wired solution (if wireless can't be made work)?

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds.txt log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

I managed to connect to the internet wirelessly.

I have downloaded the combofix.

I could not see AVG running on my pc.

Also I have checked in 'Add/Remove Programs' - I do not see any AVG installed in the list. So I thought nothing on the system.

I tried to run combofix, it has detected

"ComboFix has detected the following real time scanner(s) to be active:

antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free

Antivirus and intrusion prevention programs are known to interfere with ComboFix's running. This may lead to unpredictable results or possible machine damage.

Please disable these scanners before clicking 'Ok'. "

I have not clicked OK yet. Please advise me whether to go ahead or do we need to do anything before this.

Hi,

Ignore the warning if you have turned AVG off properly (by following instructions behind this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) link)

Hi Blade81,

I think my system is running fine. I am not sure of the virus that is found on the Kaspersky online scanner. At the moment, I do not have any antivirus software installed on the machine.

I will try installing an antivirus software and try running a scan again to remove that found virus.

I will reply once I have done the above.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Thanks,

Subhelp.

Hi,

I had problems installing AV software as it detected AVG when I could not find it from Add / remove programs list.

I have removed avg using avg remover.
Then installed and ran full scan. It detected couple. Hopefully it has removed the virus. I am running it again.

Hopefully it is fine.

Do I need to do anything else if everything is running fine?

Please let me know.

Thanks for all your help to get my computer back as normal.

But when I check in Security center, under virus protection, it says that "Windows found more than one antivirus program in this computer and atleast one reports that it is currently up to date and virus scanning is on."

Does it cause any problems?

If not, please let me know the final steps.

Thanks for waiting for my reply.

Hi,

Looks like Antivir cleaned up things that Spybot had quarantined already.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

SecCenter::
{17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}

Save this as
CFScript

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log & fresh dds.txt log.

You're welcome :) Here are some steps to follow.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade
