As per the title.

I'm getting 8 occurrences of this beastie in Spybot S&D scans at the moment; think I got it from an infected RAM Stick somehow.

I've read other threads regarding this darn thing, and have downloaded HijackThis. The logfile's below.

Any and all help from your good selves would be eminently appreciated :)

Thanks in advance!

Roger

Hello Roger,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.

Hello RogerStenning,

Apparently you missed this forum's stickies.

"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. In addition helpers would think you are already being assisted because of the post count. For that reason we may merge such posts if there is time but please do not count on it.

The same applies to bumping, please don't. In this case topics that are 'bumped' will probably be closed and the user would have to start again The Waiting Room (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=37)
Post here if still waiting for help in the Malware Forum, (AFTER) FOUR days (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=1137)

Regards.

Edit
Blade81 has responded, thank you Blade.

Blade81 -

Thanks for the response.

DDS ran fine, results attached below as text files.

GMER crashed my system the two times I tried to run it. The initial GMER window came up, then everything fell over and I got a BSOD, and had to force a manual reboot. There was no system crash diagnostic message (i.e. "you suffered a failure, send this data to microsoft", etc) on restart.

Any ideas on getting GMER to run without dumping my system again?

Hello RogerStenning,

Apparently you missed this forum's stickies.

Sorry, I was in a bit of a mental knot when I read the stickies, and must have missed that. :red:

Hi,

Deselect Devices and Sections from the GMER options and then try to run it again.

RogerStenning
2009-10-04, 13:38
And now I cannot even get GMER to run - before I even see the GMER window, my system crashes spectacularly. This Trojan or whatever the foxtrot etc it is is now really heaving me off - and I'm due to go on holiday for a few days this afternoon, so you can imagine how I feel.

Is there any alternative to GMER to find out what you need to know?

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
Direct Download (Recommended)
Primary Mirror (http://ad13.geekstogo.com/RootRepeal.exe)
Secondary Mirror (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/rootrepeal/RootRepeal.exe)
Secondary Mirror (http://rootrepeal.psikotick.com/RootRepeal.exe)
Secondary Mirror (http://ad13.geekstogo.com/RootRepeal.exe)

Extract RootRepeal.exe from the archive (If you did not use the Direct Download mirror).
Open http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/rootRepealDesktopIcon.png on your desktop.
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/reportTab.png tab.
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/btnScan.png button.
Check all seven boxes: http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/checkBoxes2.png
Push Ok
Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
Once the scan completes, push the http://billy-oneal.com/forums/rootRepeal/saveReport.png button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

ok, we got a bloody great MAJOR problem here. RootRepeal couldn't access the boot sector. I adjusted the settings in the options menu as the dialogue box suggested, and RR crashed before being able to conduct a scan.

Either whatever the hell is on my system appears to have really infiltrated it writ massive, or something else on my system legitimately is buggering things up.

If I can get this damned thing into safe mode, should I try it again, or is there another avenue I can approach this illegitimate wotsit from?

Blade81
2009-10-04, 18:20
Yes, see if you're able to run it successfully in safe mode. If not, then we'll use other methods.

Sorry, but I ran out of time on Sunday, had to up sticks and vanish off on leave (this message via the other half's notebook), will be back at the weekend, will try then.

While I'm away, I had a thought - If RootRepeal still doesn't work under XP safemode, should I try GMER again, and, if GMER does work in XP safemode, would the results it would kick out still be of any use (thinking ahead, just in case)?

Have a great week,

Roger

Yes, you may try to run GMER in safe mode.

RogerStenning
2009-10-10, 23:03
Thanks for being patient. OK, back off leave, ran up PC in safe mode, GMER ran first time.

The log is 2.14 megs in size, though, and it appears to suck large :(

The "service" highlights at the bottom make for grim reading. It's such a long listing I can't even copy it onto here.

Instead, I've uploaded it to the web, here's the link: http://www.practicalairsoft.co.uk/general/gmer.txt

God knows how it got that bad, but somewhere along the line, my machine appears to have been unprotected, which I cannot at this time explain. Some hefty advice would be most gratefully received!

Thanks for the log :)

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds.txt log. Post the contents in your reply

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

2009-10-11, 19:21
OK, ComboFix tool run, apparently properly, although I most likely wouldn't know properly run tools like that from a hole in the ground ;)

Anyhow, here're the report files, attached, as requested...

They're considerably smaller than previous reports, which I hope is an indication of a good result :)
