G'day, I recent got scared by several virus' infecting my system, I was able to remove them but whilst doing so I accidently came accross another infection: iexplore.exe. It was located in my WINDOWS folder and so I quickly removed it.

I am really worried my system is still infected in some way as it just dosn't feel right.

I use Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007

Here's my log:

I just did a full system scan with my PC-cillin and it quarantined two new items:

GAVIN KROEGER.exe

and

A0026554.exe

I have the option to clean them, plus iexplore.exe which is also in quarantine.

Should I do so?

I got worried, so I installed Spybot Search and Destroy. I did a scan. My computer still doesn't feel right.

Hi,

Let's take a closer look.

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized, if not you'll find it in c:\rsit folder)

Hi,

Start hjt, do a system scan, checkmark:
O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

Close browsers and fix checked entries.

Delete C:\Program Files\AskBarDis folder if found.

You have badly outdated version of Firefox installed there. Update it to 3.0.14 or uninstall your version and then install 3.5.3 version (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html).

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.1 + updates 9.1.2 and 9.1.3) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Check here (http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/) to see if your Flash is up-to-date (do it separately with each of your browsers). If not, uninstall vulnerable versions by following instructions here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html). Fresh version can be obtained here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck Carbonite online backup trial if it's offered there.

Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read the requirements and privacy statement then click on the Accept button.

The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.

You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run

Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives

Click on My Computer under Scan.

Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.

Click on Save Report As....

Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Save this report to a convenient place.

Copy and paste that information & fresh hjt log into your topic.

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.

I've done everything you have asked except for the scan. I will be doing it tomorrow night as today I haven't got the time to.

Ok. Shall wait for your response :)

I went to the link and I came to a page that stated in the centre:

The current Kaspersky Online Scanner is unavailable - we apologize for the inconvenience. While you are waiting for the improved Online Scanner, why not try a free trial of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, which has everything you need to keep your computer safe.

What is your recommended next course of action?

Hi,

Let's use this instead of online scanner:
Download the latest version of Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool (http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/)

* Close all other applications and double-click and run the installer.
* When AVPTool starts, select all the scanable items except for CD-ROM drives and click the Scan button.
* If malware is detected, don't remove anything.
* After the scan finishes, don't neutralize anything.
* In the Scan window click the Reports button and select Save to file.
* Name the report AVPT.txt, and save it to the Desktop.
* Close AVPTool.
* You will be prompted if you want to uninstall the program; click Yes.
* You will then be prompted that to complete the uninstallation, the computer must be restarted. Select Yes to restart the system.
* Copy and paste the first part of the report (Detected) that you saved in your next reply. Do not include the longer list marked Events.

Here ya go. 5 hours to scan, 20 minutes to open the log and get this. Phew. Anyway, since I uninstalled Java then re-installed it, my PC-cillin has been asking me at really odd intervals to let it do stuff. I figured it was because it was a new version but this scan doesn't put me at ease.

What do you think mate? Where do we go from here?

Hi,

Let's nuke that finding.

Show hidden files
-----------------
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Delete C:\Documents and Settings\Gavin Kroeger\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\57\4839f1b9-30fcf094 file.

Post a fresh hjt log and let me know how's the system running.

As far as I can tell, my computer is running alright, but then it may be too early to tell as of yet. Plus, even before I came here, the computer felt a little fishy, but was still working fine. I am just worried about keyloggers for my passwords and what not.

Does everything look okay? Anything else we should do?

And, just wondering, but how do you think I got the Java infection? I didn't have it before I updated Java, and that was after I uninstalled the old version too. It is rather curious indeed.

Thank you for your help mate.

Oh and on second look, there are two files with that name, except one of them has a .idx extension. Just to be sure, I deleted both of them.

Did I do the right thing?

Looks ok now :) In the future, try to keep programs like Adobe Reader, Flash and Java (and Windows of course :)) up-to-date since vulnerabilities in those are often taken advantage of by bad guys.

That could had been false positive that Kaspersky found but removing it doesn't make any harm since the item was in Java's cache.

Something new, and old, has come up. Old meaning ive had it before and came here to get it fixed, new meaning its come back. When I close a tab, it randomly starts opening duplicates of it as tabs. This is in internet explorer, the newest variety of it.

It doesn't stop unless I end the process.

I think it was Peku who helped last time. He said he didn't know what it was or how to fix it and so said it was most likely a glitch with the version, but since this is a new version I am getting worried.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and run a full scan with it (let it delete found items). Post back the report.

No malicious items found, which is good in that there's nothing blatant, but then it also means there may be something deeper.

Hi,

Please see if this (http://blogs.msdn.com/askie/archive/2009/07/17/slow-performance-in-internet-explorer-8-after-installing-the-skype-v4-1-application.aspx) applies to you. Skype seems to be installed at least.

It took me a bit to find it, but I did. It is now disable and I shall continue using Internet Explorer to see if the problem persists.

Thank you very much.

I do not know if this is still the appropriate place, but my computer is now more sluggish than previous. Could this have occurred due to the changes we implemented or is it just from time, or, is it more malware?

Hi,

Those changes we made shouldn't cause slowdowns. You may see here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html) for some performance improving hints.

Thank you very much for your assistance. I shall keep going with my computer and if anything more major appears I shall return to this forum and create a new thread.

Once again, thank you very much ^.^
