Hi, I am running Windows XP and have been able to update SB until last week. Was able to uninstall and reinstall but both are unable to update. Went to the site and manually downloaded the update and ran it. found one infection, "doubleclick". Deleted it but no change. Help?

Do you get any error messages when you try to update?

yes, (X) and "Error retrieving update info file!"

Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet?
Also, what are you using for a firewall?

Hello,

1. The error message \"Error retrieving update info file\" usually appears when Spybot-S&D has accidently imported bad Internet Explorer proxy settings. In this case, it helps just to disable the proxy option in Spybot-S&D:
Open the Settings section and go to the Settings page. Locate the Use proxy entry in the Automation - Web update category, and disable it.
If you cannot see the Settings section, start Spybot-S&D in advanced mode (see your Start menu group for Spybot-S&D).

This information is also available (http://www.spybot.info/en/howto/proxy.html) in our How-To section (including a screenshot).

2. Please check your firewall. Most people who do not have problem #1 do have Spybot-S&D accidentally blocked in their firewall.

3. If nothing else works, you can still use the manual updater, which is available on the website: the Detection Update (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html).
(Notice: if the Info page does not show the correct update date after installing the updates with the manual updater, please ignore that - this will be fixed with the next release)

Best regards

Hi guys.
Thanks for the help and advice. I went to the settings and have only the "beta setting" checked for the downloads.. I went to the firewall settings from Windows and unchecked the "file sharing" and remote assistance" that were checked as a last resort. Still won't allow me to update. So, I am manually retrieving the file as you suggested. Any other tricks? Should I uninstall and then reinstall?

Hi all,

First big thanks to Spybot team for their time and efforts in providing their continuous useful services.

I live exactly the same problem after my last detection update 12/2/2009.
I mean... "Error retrieving update info file!"

I run XP SP3 and installed Spybot (1.6.2.46), Spywareblaster (4.2) and Avast Pro (4.8.1368) for protection.

I am connected to ADSL so the proxy setting is already unchecked.

It seems that, accidentally, a firewall is blocking "http://www.safer-networking.org" and "http://www.spybot.info/" too! As you may have already guessed, I can't update manually.

Fortunately I can access
"http://www.spybotupdates.biz/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe"

So my question is:
How can I find out if the blocking is on my PC or not?

Thank you.

Kerim

Hi again,

It is okay now.
It was likely a temporary blocking by a firewall of an external server. Sorry... because it is the first time after I installed and run SpyBot, with big thanks, since many years.

For instance... Wish you all a Happy New Year.
