View Full Version : Slow to Access My Computer and Address Bar in Normal Mode, Works fine in Safe Mode

I ran SmitFraudFix to fix a problem with SpywareSheriff.FakeAlert (which it did fix:) ) but it now seems that I have another problem that only appeared after I ran SmitFraudFix:( . The new problem is that when I try to access "My computer" or the address bar function of IE...it now takes a very long time to respond (20-25 seconds)...which is finally does and then it lets me due what I need to do...it seems to be looking for something (I get the little flashlight icon when trying to access My Computer)...it doesn't find anything and then lets me search fine...until I try this again, keeps on happening...this problem does NOT happen when I'm in Safe Mode...My Computer and the address bar options (shortcuts, etc.) work fine.

Any help would be appreciated. I've run SpyBot, Windows Defender, Symantec Scans, AdAware SE, and went to one of the online scans suggested as first-steps to detecting problems...looks clean right now.

I've included by logs below. Thank you.

Open HijackThis and do a *scan only*
When it finishes, checkmark these items in the list and then press the *fix checked* button:

The SmitFraudFix tool you have is very outdated (that updates about daily almost to keep up with new variants). So I think the next thing we should do is have you delete the current SmitfraudFix folder and file and get a fresh download of the latest version and run that again. (yes, it will reset your desktop to the default, but you can set it to you preferences afterwards)

1. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (Win2k/WinXP only!).
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

How to extract (decompress) zipped or compressed files
http://www.lvsonline.com/compresstut/index.shtml

Note : process.exe is part of the SmitFraudFix tool and is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky, Panda) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode
You can usually do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam)

3. Once in Safe mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.

4. Once back into normal mode, please scan with HijackThis to produce a log. Post that log into your topic along with the other requested logs named below.

Logs needed in your next post are:

rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed

Fresh HijackThis log

Looks good! :) The newer version did find a lot of entries, most of them harmless gif images but there was one .dll.

Can you tell me if you see any problems now on your end?

drjkeyah
2006-06-24, 01:40
Still the same problem...when I try to access "My Computer" or use the "Address" bar in IE, computer is very, very slow to access these features, it eventually does and I can move forward. However, if I try to do it again, it will again work very, very slowly...another thing that the Address bar does not do any more is give me the quick list of sites once I start typing in an address, these feature no longer works? Again, this only happened after I ran SmitFraudFix?

Hmmm, these symptoms I don't know about being associated with this infection.

Let's try this first to see if SmitfraudFix missed anything

Download this free tool called: smitRem
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1
and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply

Next time you notice this happening, do a Ctrl/Alt/Del to open up the Windows Task Manager

Do you see anything consuming large amounts of CPU?

Paperport perhaps? I have a visioneer/paperport scanner and unless I turn it off when not in use, it can cause a large about of CPU being used which slows down everything.
