Hello and welcome to the forum. I see nothing in the HJT log, but since you said Zlob.Downloader let's take a look for the Smitfraud trojan.
Thanks to S!Ri, Trevuren and any others who helped with the fix.
Please download SmitfraudFix (http://www.geekstogo.com/modules.php?modid=5&action=download&id=80) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

OK Jeffrey, the scan for Smitfraud (Zlob.Downloader) is totally clean. I also see nothing in the HJT log. Before I proceed I will need more information. What program is finding what and where. What are the symptoms you are experiencing. Please give me as much information as you can. Any error message? Give those to me word for word. Is your Spybot S&D updated? Post the results of the Spybot scan so I can see what it is showing. What other programs did you run, what is Symantec and Windows Defender showing when you scan with them?
Thanks...Phil
--- Search result list ---
Zlob.Downloader: Settings (Registry value, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\run\wininet.dll=...regperf.exe...
The Spybot Report is HUGE........I can send it to an e-mail (PM if you would like.)
Zone Alarm........Norton Anti-Virus.......I Hate Spam......PestPatrol.......
They were all running.........
Thanks again bud.....
Jeff
Also......no error messages......I DO have the updates SpyBot......need anything else?

No, hold everything where your are. I want to ask the creator of the fix to take a look because it is not showing in the SmitFraudFix scan. Might take a while to get feedback, so be patient.
Thanks...

Thanks for your patience Jeff, the creator of the fix has posted and indicated the registry keys are not displayed in the first log. This is the first time I have seen this infection where no other instance of the infection was in the first log??
S!R! has suggested we run option 2, and that this will happen:
Try to run SmitfraudFix (normal mode is ok). Desktop will be removed and homepage will be restaured to microsoft/msn. Or remove it manually
If it is ok with you, I would like to run the complete balance of the fix, unless you wish to remove the registry item manually to see if that takes care of the problem?
Instructions start here:
Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
A. Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install Ewido anti-malware.
When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/). Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.
B. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Login on your usual account.
______________________________
C. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.
The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

D. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________
E. Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
Click on Scanner
Click on Settings
Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
Under What to scan select Scan every file
Click on Ok
Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
Click Save Report button
Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________
F. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

G. Please post:
c:\rapport.txt
Ewido log
A new HijackThis log
You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.
You can shorten the ewido log by editing out all cookies that are deleted. Ewido is a new version 4.0, and the instructions have not been updated but should work ok. You want to remove any item ewido says is bad unless you know it is not.
Thank...Phil
I will definitely do that but I will be away for a little while (5 days) if that is ok....I will get back to you ASAP ........
I think Ewido got it...but here are the reports............HiJack This

Thanks for returning your information. All logs look good this morning:bigthumb: and I would say you are good to go. This new version of ewido places stuff in quarantine so after a few days with no problems I would clean out the quarantine area as I would the quarantine areas of any programs you run.
Here is a nice free tool to clean for you if you wish:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml
ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Safe surfing...tashi:)will be along to close you in a few days.
Thanks...pskelley

Yes please.........I will post another log. My Pest Patrol Software found Actual Spy 2.8 and Spybot S and Destroy found Zlob Downloader.........
Jeff
Hello Jeff, I personally place no faith in Pest Patrol but if you will post the results of that scan so I can see what you are talking about, I will be glad to take a look. I have no idea what "Spy 2.8" is but it may be part of the SmitfraudFix. You can delete all of that program now, it is obsolete already.
PP may be seeing this:
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
I would also like to see the Spybot results, exactly what it says it is locating. If it is showing something in the System Restore (perhaps System Information) then that would mean you did not follow all directions, especially these:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=sec_doc_nam
Give me this information and I will have a better idea of what you are seeing and I will know how to proceed. Please post no logs unless I request them.
Thanks...Phil
This is where Spybot found Zlob.Downloader..........
I had Spybot "fix" all entries and it was sucessful until it got to Zlob.Downloader............

Make sure you delete any of the SmitfraudFix you have on your computer, we want to download the newest version.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
Start at this point: Clean
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Post this report C:\rapport.txt
Thanks

I hate to edit the registry for one item, can you tell me besides the fact it is showing in the Spybot scan, what other symptom is occuring? Those cookies are something you should be controlling yourself:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx
Thanks...
I understand what you are saying but when I did some research on Zlob.Downloader it seems to be a program that downloads other malware and I think that is where the Actual Spy 2.8 is coming from.......
Symptoms....... every once in awhile my internet connection (cable) slows a bit but other than that nothing that I can tell.........
I really don't want that thing on there though.........it seems that Zlob.Downloader has been successfully deleted in the past.....what makes mine so particularly nasty?

I have no idea why this item was not removed on this computer and I have removed this infection from hundreds.
I also do not know what Spy 2.8 is? It is possible that damage was done to the item by tools that were run that could not remove it. There are only two tools that successfully remove this infection that I know of and we are using one of those. I have posted a query for the creator of the fix and I will respond as soon as I have information. As far as the cable issue, I have that from time to time and I have no knowledge that this infection causes that. You may want to ask your ISP about a cause.
Thanks
Do a google search on ActualSpy 2.8.......it is there.....can't believe they actually sell this stuff.
Thanks for the querie......I will be in town all day today and tomorrow.......hopefully that will be enough time to fix this once and for all.........
Thanks again for all your help......I would be lost without it.:bigthumb:

Looks like no one knows why that item remained, at least I am getting no feedback. If you still have the problem post a new HJT log and as much information about the problem as you think will help. We will probably need to edit your registry to get rid of that line. The other junk, would you search by name to see if you can turn up the location of an instance of it on the computer. Since this all started with Smitfraud, and that is being updated almost daily, would you make sure the tool is totally removed from your computer and then download it again from this link:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
I am only interested in this information:
Search: Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Thanks...Phil

Still shows up on Spybot scans...........If I do not scan for a few days it also starts downloading other malware. It seems like Spybot controls those with a subsequent scan but cannot touch the Zlob.downloader (Trojan.Downloader.Win32Zlob) ............file itself (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current version\policies\explorer\runwininet.dll) (between run and wininet the is a straight symbol looking like a 1 but I could not reproduce it)
Before I touched my registry files themselves I wanted to get your input and help :)
Thanks for your time........
Jeff
I have today off only.....I have to go to work tomorrow afternoon..........I would like to knock this out today if possible

Here is another member who had a similar issue with this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=36384#post36384
This is new?? F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe My scan is showing it is:
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-110314-5204-99&tabid=1
This shows up in this HJT log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:35:18 PM, on 8/8/2006
Since you have Symantec, use the instructions they offer under the Removal Tab to get rid of it.
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-110314-5204-99&tabid=3
______________________________________________________________
Once that is done, if you want this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\run\wininet.dll=...regperf
removed from the registry, then follow these directions:
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL
I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder,
open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked
and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within
the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything
it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly,
control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click
any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Reboot When done.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe <<< may be gone after the Symantec instructions
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Run ewido with these instructions:
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.
Post the ewido scan report and a new HJT log.
Thanks

This is still there: R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
but it is only clutter. One of your Spyware programs is more than likely blocking the change. Remove it with HJT in safe mode if you wish.
Thanks
This look better ?

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Thanks

Launch Notepad (not wordpad), and copy and paste the contents of the code box below into a new text file.
Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: All files (*.*) and save it on your Desktop.
REGEDIT4
;
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\KAZAA]
;
Now double-click on the fixme.reg file you saved and click on the Yes button when it asks if you would like to merge the information. Once you get a successful message delete fixme.reg.
Let us know of any problems
It was done............should I run a Spybot Search and Destroy scan?
I appreciate your help and will let you know if there are any other problems...........
Thanks guys (girls).......lol

Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let one of us know via a PM (personal message).
I tried to modify the registry and it says Error:unable to modify values....
It stops me from the modification...........I ran a new S+D scan and the problem is still there......

If your comfortable working in the registry
rightclick on run the run just after explorer\policy
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run
choose permisions, hilight administrator and put a check next to allow, do that for system to, ensure run is selected again right click and choose delete
If your not comfortable we can just ignore it, it is only a leftover and can couse no harm.
THAT DID IT..I want thank you and your staff for ALL the time needed to take care of this problem. Thanks again !!!!!!!!:bigthumb:
