View Full Version : My XP Laptop will no longer connect to internet - I suspect malware or a virut

Hello Spybot experts,

My girlfriend's laptop seems to have been infected by a virus, virut or malware. I have tried hard by myself, using advice to others on forums, to fix it, but to no avail. Your post about autorun/virut gives me little hope, but I have yet to ask any experts.

The laptop runs on an OEM Windows XP Home Edition version (2002 with service pack 3) and used Avast! antivirus software.

I have already done a lot, hopefully more good than bad :S

I found:

I have deleted the autorun.inf files for all partitions manually following these instructions:
1. Open Start>>Run and type cmd and press enter. This will open a command prompt window. On this command prompt window type the following steps.
2. type cd\
3. type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf
4. type del autorun.inf

It seems the virusses are now gone - Avast! no longer finds any threats.

Unfortunately, I also no longer have any access to internet. The laptop can connect to our home wifi lan fine, but not access internet afterwards. Also, Outlook (from Microsoft Office 2007) no longer runs. It freezes during start up and no longer reacts to anything.

I have tried to download and install a number of anti virus or anti spyware programs, such as Spybot, AVG, Avast!, Eset (a cracked version I downloaded with utorrent), HijackThis and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

The problem is, however, that I needed to download them on my desktop and copy them (with a USB stick which seems to have remained clean so far) to the laptop. After that, I had no way of updating their databases...

My girlfriend needs her laptop again this weekend, and I can only see one solution: formatting the laptop and reinstalling everything. I hope you have an alternative that saves me a lot of backup work, because the laptop has no restore points, backups or anything like that.

I have made a copy of the registry with ERUNT and run HijackThis for a log. I will paste it underneath. If you can help me, I will be most grateful!!

Thank you for responding! When I saw so many other questions being answered first, I decided to try something more by myself - due to the fact that my girlfriend really needed her laptop.

Apparently, the internet problem is not virus related after all, because she could connect on the wlan at her parents' home, just not on mine. I will still have to figure out how to connect her to my wlan, but that is not important.

With internet available, I updated Avast! and Ad-Aware and ran several other programs such as EasyCleaner. From the looks of it, her laptop is now free of any virii and malware.

There was a problem with Outlook using up 100% of the cpu time and effectively freezing, but I eventually solved that by deleting the outlook-backup.pst from her profile.

In other words, although I was ready to delete bitcomet and everything else, it looks as if her laptop is now working and healthy once again. The next time I have the time, I will restart System Restore, back up her registry, remove all her unused programs and (with great care!) clean up her drives, list of installed software, msconfig, registry, etc.

Thanks again for the offered help. You may consider my problem solved :)
