Hi There

My computer is infected with something. My desktop background has changed to a solid colour and when my computer starts i get a message "Error loading C:\Windows\apevuhoxuquxojap.dll The specified module could not be found." I cannot start my computer in safe mode - when i try I get the blue screen (of death?)
The Malwarebytes scan I ran yesterday said I had backdoor.bot. I have also run Spybot S&D, trend micro housecall, Kaspersky online scanner, AVG and SUPERAntiSpyware and cleaned all the warnings as I went along. I also tried Trojan Remover v6.7.8 and ran an Avast boot time scan.
The Global (Hosts) won't immunise when using S&D.

Please help.

There was a message when I ran HJT -
"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file HJT may NOT be able to fix this [...]
notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

Hi daviedoo

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
If you need help to disable your protection programs see here. (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Shaba

Thank you for your help.

When I tried to run ComboFix.exe it gave me the following message:
"Terminal Error - Missing file
C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe is missing
Copy one from another machine"

I'm not sure what this means, or how to go about doing what it says.
Do you still want another HJT log?

It means that file is missing.

Can you copy that file to usb stick from some other computer?

Hi Shaba

I have a laptop so I was able to copy the file from there.

When I ran ComboFix.exe a message popped up saying something about rootkits and how it needed to reboot the pc, I clicked OK.

A stop error screen appeared with technical information -
STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF791F524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I turned the pc off and on again and got the same stop error screen. This happened when I tried Normal Mode, Windows recovery console, Safe Mode and Last known good configuration.

Is there anything that can be done from here?

Sorry to hear that.

Do you have windows CD handy?

I'm almost certain I have the windows CD.

Is that a gentle way of saying I need to format my hard drive?

No but repair installation is likely needed.

Do you need help with that?
