A friend got duped into installing malware on my PC on October 16th while I was out of town. Walked her through a Spybot scan over the phone and had her Fix what Selected Problems she could, then instructed her to cease touching anything immediately until I returned.

Came home on the 18th, ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which quarantined 782 objects (can paste log if desired, consists of multiple entries for "Rogue.WindowsEnterpriseDefender," "Trojan.Vundo," "Security.Hijack," and "Hijack.SearchPage"), then ran Spybot (with updated definitions) which came back clean except for two Problems:

Fraud.WindowsProtectionSuite (12 entries)

and

Microsoft.Windows.RedirectedHosts (204 entries)

When attempting to Fix Selected Problems, the following pop-up error in Spybot was displayed for each of these 216 entries:

"Unexpected error in fixing problems (Cannot create file "C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts". Access is denied)"

I went to that "hosts" file and indeed the Date Modified is 10/16/09 exactly at the time she installed it.

Used System Restore to go back to 10/15/09 but this did not resolve the issue.

--------------

I have turned off Tea Timer, restarted, and backed up my registry with ERUNT.

Here is my HJT Log (HJT returned about five or six errors related to the "hosts" file, let me know if you need more details about that):

(Thank You)

Hello and :welcome: to Safer Networking

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

If you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask
Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

1 - download and run HOSTXPERT

Please download HostXpert (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip).

Unzip HostsXpert.zip
Double click on HostsXpert.exe
Then click on Restore ms Hosts file to restore your Hosts file to its default condidtion..
Click on Make Read Only to secure it against further infection.
Close program when complete.

2 - download and run RSIT

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

3- Status Check
Please reply with

the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)

Thanks peku006

Hi peku006, thanks so much for your prompt response and welcome. You guys are the ish.

I downloaded HostsXpert, unzipped, opened, clicked Restore MS Hosts File, then clicked the OKAY button to confirm I wanted to restore MS' original hosts file . . . got the following error pop-up from HostsXpert: "ERROR: Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts"

When I click OKAY to acknowledge, HostsXpert automatically disappears.

Accordingly, I imagined you'd like me to wait before attempting the second (RSIT) part of your instructions. :thanks:

Hi skeptik

Check your hosts file

Click on Start
Click on Run
Copy and paste from the list below the correct one for your operating system. Be sure and include the word notepad

For XP & Vista:
notepad C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
For 2k:
notepad C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts
For 98 & ME:
notepad C:\WINDOWS\hosts

Click OK, notepad will then open with your host file
Copy and paste the whole hosts file in a reply

Thanks peku006

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

I manually deleted (from my post, not the hosts file!!:)all of the entries Spybot has immunized my browsers from because the forums sais I had WAYYYYYY to many characters to post a reply--assumed you wouldn't need these for analysis.

Hi skeptik

Install MVPS Hosts File
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Download from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm).
Find tutorial here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm).

after that .......... continue with rsit

Thanks peku006

Hi peku006,

Downloaded and double-clicked "mvps.bat" but instead of it doing its thing (since I'm running WindowsXP their site indicated I'd see a pop-up asking me if I trusted the publisher and wanted to run, etc.) I get a Command Prompt window that comes up, stating:

"mvps.bat started from Directory: C:\Docume~1\HP_Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$DI13.345
3\
Press any key to continue . . ."

I wasn't sure what this meant but after scouring the mvps website for awhile I do believe the batch file did not do what it needed to.

Also, it seems like I might be able to manually do what that batch file was supposed to do for me, with a little bit of advice; I did not attempt this though without your OK.

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

2 - Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Select the Update tab
Click Check for Updates
After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
On the Scanner tab:
Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.

If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
2. a fresh HijackThis log

(When I attempted to delete all of your listed bad HJT entries, I got errors on four of them, stating it could not be removed because "the file already exists." If needed, can post the details upon request.)

After the removal and subsequent MBAM scan, there were no errors returned by the HTJ Scan (first time doing an HJT Scan w/no errors, FYI) . . .

Hi skeptik

1 - Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.

Go to Java Site (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)
Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
In Platform box choose Windows.
Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Reboot your computer

2 - Clean temp files

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)

Save it to your desktop
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

For Technical Support double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3 - Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

4 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

5- Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Kaspersky online scanner report
2. a fresh HijackThis log
How's the computer running now? Any problems?

Thanks peku006

Thanks, I removed and reinstalled Java just like you said and so far everything's great (Google.com doesn't even redirect me to Google-Canada anymore) but unfortunately I ran out of time and we're about to leave for the day/night.

I will definitely complete the rest of this as soon as we get back tomorrow afternoon; well, after the football game . . .

Hope it's not an inconvenience. :thanks:

peku006,

Sorry it's taken this long; I've just been having a hard time completing a scan with Kaspersky . . . I've got everything else finished as directed (ATF Cleaner is awesome, by the way, thanks for that tip!).

The Kaspersky scan seems to max out my CPU usage and I haven't gotten it to scan past 7% of my system (200GB) even leaving it alone overnight and while at work, two separate tries. Wonder if it's a problem with my low RAM (512kb)?

Anyway, I just got a scan of "critical areas" (not "my computer") to work, so I'll post that result and try the entire "my computer" scan again overnight tonight in case it works this time.

Here's the Kapersky scanner report (with only the scan of "critical areas"),

Yeah, I tried the Kaspersky "My Computer" scan again last night overnight and when I got home from work today (about 20 hrs later) it had still not scanned past 7% -- it was still trying, just sort of locked up Firefox, 100% CPU, wouldn't respond to hitting the Stop Scanning button, just had to close the tab.

In case you need to know, I did uninstall my AntiVirus software (AVG) in case that was causing the problem, but the same thing happened on the 2nd & 3rd attempts.

Here's the Security Check file:

Hi skeptik

Anti-virus software are programs that detect cleans and erase harmful virus files on a computer
Web server or network. Unchecked virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present and will clean delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

Avira AntiVir Personal (http://www.free-av.de/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50000 viruses. Free support.
avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition#tba2) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Letīs try eset

You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Please go here (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/) then click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS1.gif

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox. Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS2.gif
When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

Scan for potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
Now click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS3.gif
The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
Now click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS4.gif
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Hi peku006,

Tried the ESET scanner last night; when I awoke, the PC was frozen on the screen which says "Windows Is Shutting Down" and I had to leave for work. Same thing when I got home so I had to do a hard reset of the computer. So tonight overnight I'll run the scan again (since doing the reset lost the ESET log file--assuming it completed fully before the computer decided to F-up).

Hopefully this was just an unrelated Windows glitch.

Going to do the ESET scan overnight again -- thanks!

OK, so I think I'm good but . . .

I couldn't delete the file: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MiniBugTransporter.dll

. . . because I can't locate it on my computer. I pasted the file location into the Run function but Windows can't determine the program that created it (one of those).

So I just went to the folder Windows\Downloaded Program Files but the Minibug file is not showing. I checked and I already have it set to Show Hidden Files & Folders, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Regardless, I ran a Kapersky scan on the "Windows\Downloaded Program Files" folder and it came back clean (and I personally saw it scanning the minibug file) as well as ran a full system scan of Spybot S&D (also clean) so I think I'm OK unless you know how I can find that file to delete it.

I think the problem may be because (according to the intertubes) minbugtransporter.dll is associated with WeatherBug (which came factory-installed on my PC four years ago) and I've already deleted that parent (Weatherbug) program . . . maybe that's it. Whatever.

At least for all intents and purposes everything appears to be back in working order. I can't thank you enough for your patience and assistance throughout this. It's a noble thing you do here.

Hope the weather's nice in Norway, let me know if you still have any final thoughts, thanks from the States!

Hi skeptik

Hope the weather's nice in Norway
yes the weather is fine.....rain and fog:slap:

Letīs try this

Download OTM (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTM.exe) by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
Paste the following code under the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/OTM/pasteline.png area. Do not include the word Code.

:Files
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MiniBugTransporter.dll

Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
Push the large http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/OTM/btnmoveit.png button.
OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

On a side note, I am starting to wonder if I have a problem with my PC and if it could be related at all (weird, since everything seems just about cleared up) . . . my computer keeps sort of locking up, such that the only fix (I'm aware of) is to Hard Reset it. I have just had to perform the THIRD Hard Reset in three days.

If it's any use at all, I'll give the details of what was going on at the time the freezes occurred and on which screens, etc.

Again though, I'm afraid this may just be an unrelated issue.

Thanks!(

Hi skeptik

Update Adobe Reader
It looks like your version of Adobe Reader is out of date and you're vulnarable for infections.
Please download the newest version here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_servefile.html?option=full&order=1&type=&language=English&platform=WinXPSP2&esdcanbeused=0&esdcanhandle=0&hasjavascript=1&dlm=nos

Install it, then go to Add Remove Programs and remove any older versions that may remain.

Please reply with

a fresh HijackThis log

OK, got Adobe Reader 9 from that link, installed with success but got warning about how fragmented my hard disk is, and that it might not work completely right until that's addressed.

Only recently I found out what de-fragmenting is all about and how I've been supposed to do this on a semi-regular basis. Never done it once; PC's about 4 yrs old. (And yes, I feel like an idiot. :))

I'm curious if said long-overdue defragging would mitigate/rectify the "freezing" issues I keep running into every day (have temporarily stopped by only turning on the PC when using, then shutting down Windows after finished. But, wanted to clear it with you first in case you'd rather me hold off until we've resolved the issues you're assisting with???

Additionally, when I go to Add/Remove Programs, I only see the new Adobe Reader, not the old ones which are still on the computer (I can see them in the "C:\Program Files\Adobe" folder), but I don't know if I should manually delete anything without using Add/Remove Programs (of if the lack of their appearing in that utility indicates they've already been disabled or something). Let me know if any further action needed in that regard.

Hi skeptik

we can check whether the old "Adobe version" still there............otherwise looks good :D:

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply

How's the computer running now?

As requested . . . boy there's a lot of crap on here.

Also, everything seems to be working perfectly . . . haven't had the computer freeze up since I started keeping it turned off most of the time. It's quick as hell when I do turn it on. I'm going to try to defragment the hard drive overnight tonight and see how it does.)

Hi skeptik

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations! :yahoo:

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:

Double-click OTM.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Here are some things that I think are worth having a look at if you don't already know a bout them:.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html). Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html)

SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

WinPatrol
Download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

MVPS Hosts File from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Read some information here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:
