View Full Version : Trojan horse FakeAlertMN and Win32/Cryptor

John Deas
2009-10-26, 23:31
My neighbour's system: Vista with AVG Free and Spybot run "every couple of weeks". Symptoms are a stream of alerts from AVG Resident Shield about:

- Trojan horse FakeAlertMN
- Virus found Win32/Cryptor

The system also seems to me very slow-repsonding, but that may just be Vista which I don't normally use.

HJT log attached.
Regards,
John Deas

Hi John Deas

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
If you need help to disable your protection programs see here. (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Running Combofix produced a window which said:

"Combofix.exe has stopped working.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I had started the program by right-clicking the icon and choosing "Run as administrator"; and I had disabled Resident Shield in AVG Free 8.5. I don't know of anything else that should have been disabled. Another HJT log attached in case that helps.

Regards, John Deas

Please rename combofix.exe and run it in safe mode.

Let me know if it helped.

John Deas
2009-11-02, 22:36
Thanks - that worked. I renamed ComboFix and ran it from Safe Mode: after some time it said it had found rootkit activity and asked me to write down the names of these files:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\gaopdxjmvriryp.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\UACctawqirwso.sys
C:\Windows\system32\UACbiptruqsqo.dll
C:\Windows\system32\UACxukfbirhyb.dll
C:\Windows\system32\UACpqgnwcygxv.dat
C:\Windows\system32\UAChtdbmfyuwj.dll

It then restarted into normal mode and ran to completion and produced a log. The instructions in "BEFORE you POST" say to paste all logs into the message, but this Combofix log is 646kb and the system won't accept it - can I send it as an attachment?

After running ComboFix I ran HJT again and that log is below.

Is there any particular section huge?

John Deas
2009-11-03, 15:03
I have searched through the Combofix log using (((((((((((((((((((((((((((( to find headers, and the section headers are:

- Other deletions
- Drivers/Services
- Files Created from 2009-10-02 to 2009-11-02
- Find3M Report
- SnapShot@2009-04-29_13.43.21

this one is very long, then comes another heading the same:

- SnapShot@2009-04-29_13.43.21

I copy below a version with the very long section cut out:

That was expected :)

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Kaspersky would not run - the "Accept" button was greyed out. I did start Firefox by "Run as administrator" as instructed. Two possible reasons, represented by red warnings on the Kaspersky screen:
- "Please deactivate the anti-virus software installed on your computer" - but in the Security Center AVG Free 8.5 is shown as OFF; under "Spyware", Windows Defender was shown as ON and I turned it OFF (temporarily), but the red warning still showed on Kaspersky.
- "Java support by the browser: false" - but Firefox tools/options/content shows "Enable JavaScript" and "Enable Java" both checked, though on the "Tools menu" the item "Java console" is greyed out. I downloaded and installed the latest version of Java, without result.

Then please run this instead:

Please go to ESET Online Scanner (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.
Note: You - will - need to use Internet Explorer for this scan!
Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
Click "Start"
Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
Click "Start". Make sure that the options: Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
Scan unwanted applications is CHECKED
Click "Scan"
Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.

Good - that worked. Log attached.

(I won't bother repeating this every time, but we're extremely grateful for your prompt and helpful replies!)

I notice that Google has been replaced as standard search engine by "search-solver.com" which is no doubt an effect of the malware. Also, when I double-clicked the shortcut for HJT after this run, the system said that shortcut no longer worked - I will reinstall it next time.

Please uninstall Live-Player and delete this folder afterwards:

C:\Program Files\Live-Player

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark this:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.search-solver.com/?t=Q0907282566&s=h

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot, post back a fresh HijackThis log and tell me if you have any issues left.

That all went OK; new HJT log attached. I have upgraded the system's AVG Free to v9.0 and turned on the Resident Shield again, and over 10 minutes or so no warnings appeared. Maybe we're there - thanks again.

That looks good :)

Are you ready for final instructions?

John Deas
2009-11-07, 12:18
>Are you ready for final instructions?

Yes, please. Anything that can help to keep him from geting infected again, and any guess at what he might have done to get infected. He is a *very* unsophisticated user, over 80 years old, who does not use his system for much more than email; after endless trouble with a previous system this was a clean start with a new Vista system and AVG Free and Spybot installed from the start, and yet he has managed to get infected twice within a year. I'm sure he isn't knowingly using P2P systems; he exchanges with friends a lot of files of jokes and slideshows of amazing photos, but he sends them on to me and none of them have triggered any alarms on my system.

I guess he must have had one of those things that invite you to download something to play it, and got infected that way; if you have any idea what it might have been that gave him Live-player and Search-solver, that would help.

Also, anything else to install by way of defences - evidently AVG plus Windows Defender firewall is not enough.

Thanks again, John Deas

Then we can't add anything too complicated.

Most firewalls require a lot of knowledge.

I recommend that you will get him a router with hardware firewall/NAT if he already hasn't one and that he will continue using vista firewall.

See below for my final instructions.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
