I'm working on my daughter-in-law's laptop that may have an infection. It's running Vista & I keep getting error messages. Researching these error messages online state the possibility of a Trojan or some other infection. Everytime I try to run a virus detection program ( Trend Micro online, Avira, Spybot, etc.) the screen goes white usually but will alternate with the Blue Screen of Death. Could I get some help determining if this laptop does have an infection before I go on to rule out a hardware problem?

Indidentally, I can only bring the laptop up in Safe Mode.

Hi,

Let's see if you're able to grab a few logs.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log in your reply.

Blade, Thanks for replying. Unfortunately the situation had deteriorated to the point that my daughters laptop would no longer boot to Safe mode. The last time I was able to get into Safe mode no security programs (MBAM, Spybot, Avira) would run. They would install but not run & all restore points and been deleted. Last night I was forced to format the hard drive and reinstall Vista. Right now I'm doing Update and will install Avira, Spybot, MBAM, Comodo Firewall, WinPatrol & Firefox. Hopefully these will keep her safer. Unless you have any other suggestions I think you can close this thread.

Sorry to hear that the case ended to format. Still it was most likely right choice. What it comes to security programs listed there it sounds good :bigthumb:

Hopefully system will remain safe this time.
